Cheong Soo Pieng (1917-1983) - Portrait of a seated Sarawak girl, half clad wearing a sarong, ink, watercolour and body colour on paper, signed with two character and red seal, further signed in English and dated '59, image size 66 cm x 37 cm, framed and glazed. Provenance: The Property of a Gentleman. Acquired in Singapore by the vendor's father, a partner in a principal Singapore law firm 1950's/1960's. Loke Wan Tho, the famous magnate, collector and ornithologist was a client of this law firm, and introduced the vendor's father thereby to the works of Cheong Soo Pieng.Soo Pieng visited the Dayak longhouses of Borneo in 1959, where he formulated his distinctive style of figure painting, the example offered here is most probably an image made during this visit.Loke Wan Tho, of course, is closely linked to Cheong Soo Pieng's work. He bequested both 'Bali Beach' (1955) and 'Puppet Maker' (1953) to the National Gallery of Singapore. The National Archives of Singapore, furthermore, hold a photograph of Loke Wan Tho beside Cheong Soo Pieng (Negative Number 92, 109/30-photo accession number 6883). Condition Report good original, executed on thin paper typical of the type the artist used while on tour, hence some areas of discolouration and light water staining, we have removed from frame to inspect (see images) framed under glass

A Japanese watercolour painting on ecru silk depicting three egrets, framed, probably early 20th century, one swallowing a fish, amongst lotus leaves, a lotus flower with seed head and grasses on the edge of a lake, signed in black upper right and with red seal marks, 51¾ x 33½ in. (130 x 85.25cm.). * Condition: This painting appears to be in very good condition. There is no evidence of damage to either the paintwork or to the silk. However there is a small spot of what appears to be a splash of lighter paint on the background, to the right of centre, near the top, approximately 3 cms. down from the edge. This is a teardrop shape, approx. 5mm. long and has a maximum width of approx. 3mm. Apart from this, there are a few minute dark spots to the background which appear to be paint splashes - mostly about pinhead size.

A WATERCOLOUR BY EDWARD WITHERS (C1754-D1814) OF A ROSE AND BUDS on laid paper, 30.5 x 21cm and two albums of mounted photographs of drawings and inscriptions by William 'Quaker' Pegg The watercolour was amongst twelve by Withers found by John Twitchett said to have been in the possession of an old Derby family. Two were initialled EW and one dated 1789, they mostly depicted flowers. It is conjectured they may have been part of a portfolio intended to demonstrate Withers' proficiency at flower painting to William Duesbury. ++The watercolour which has been deframed for the present sale, much creased and stained, the two albums of photographs in good condition
