Carol McDermott, watercolour, "Near the Tarn". 28 cm x 28 cm, signed. CONDITION REPORT: The painting is framed and glazed. The condition is generally good. There is a slight crease to the paper on the right hand side through the right hand tree. This is however fairly insignificant. The picture could be hung and enjoyed in its current state without the need for any work.
Arthur Severn, watercolour, coastal scene. 50 cm x 72 cm, signed and dated 1889. CONDITION REPORT: The painting is under glass. The back of the glass is very dirty and gives the impression that there are numerous brown spots to the watercolour. In reality the majority of these are actually on the back of the glass. There are however traces of foxing to the mid section of the painting which in our opinion is not particularly problematic. The picture needs removing from the frame, remounting and reframing. We cannot see any damage to the picture itself and there is no evidence of any repairs or restoration.
Louis le Brocquy HRHA (1916-2012)Fan Tailed Pigeons (528)Oil on canvas, 38 x 46cm (15 x 18'')Signed and dated 1985 verso and inscribed on stretcher 528, Fan Tailed Pigeons 1985Provenance: From the collection of the late Gillian Bowler.Exhibited: The Taylor Gallery, Dublin (label verso)For someone who devoted so much of his career to representations of humans, either as travellers, mythical warriors, or studies of individual or generic presences, Louis le Brocquy was a particularly fine interpreter of animals and birds. Some of his most powerful paintings were of Irish Travellers in the 1940s and it is in his depictions of their lives that we find his first images of animals and birds. One of these, ‘Tinker Group’, a 1947 watercolour shown in ‘Louis le Brocquy; Allegory and Legend’, at the Hunt Museum in 2006, has as its shocking central motif a traveller woman dangling a mouse by the tail, to be followed a year later by ‘Man Creating Bird’ shown in the same exhibition. Later he based one of his most important early tapestries, ‘The Garlanded Goat’, 1949, on the goat at Puck Fair in Killorglin and later still, in 1969, he produced one of the most powerful birds in Irish visual culture - the Morrigan, as part of his illustrations to Thomas Kinsella’s translation of ‘The Táin’ legend. With the possible exception of the mouse, all of these portrayals of the bird and animal kingdom are symbolic, they represent remnants of a pagan culture, of beauty and creativity, and of the heroic. What they share is le Brocquy’s acute observation of the creatures’ salient features and an effortless ability to transmit their animal outrage, terror or sense of self-worth in paint. The dove, is widely recognised as a symbol of peace. Picasso is one of many artists who have painted it for this reason and having lived through two devastating world wars and decades of strife in Northern Ireland, it might be expected that Le Brocquy’s doves would also carry this symbolic weight. However, his ‘Fan-tailed Pigeons’ are too caught up in the flurry of their mating rituals to embody anything else. Instead the painting seems to belong, like his occasional still life paintings, to those moments when the artist relaxed and painted the things closest to him simply for the pleasure of it. The white, blue-grey palette, so familiar from his head paintings, is enlivened here by the vigour of the brushwork.Catherine Marshall, April 2017

Circa 1930. A framed and glazed watercolour painting (unsigned) by Vernon Edwards depicting a Jurassic marine scene with fish, reptiles and other ancient life forms. 2.4 kg, 68 x 41cm (26 3/4 x 16"). Fine ConditionFrom the historic collection of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd; acquired by Percy Bottley of Gregory, Bottley & Co. in the 1930s; formerly from a historic natural history art collection, the artistic work of palaeontologist, Commander Vernon Edwards. See Swinton, Dr William Elgin, Monsters of Primeval Days, London, 1931; see also, same author, The Dinosaurs - A Short History of a Great Group of Extinct Reptiles, London, 1934 wherein many of the drawings, models and dioramas created by Edwards are published, described and illustrated (the author at the Natural History Museum, London, 1924-1961 later Director of Life Sciences, Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, died 1994").Vernon Edwards is credited as being one of the most talented and influential dinosaur model makers of the 20th century. His work has appeared in museums and galleries around the world; it was a major influence on movie producers and early special effects creators, particularly when films such as The Lost World and King Kong began to showcase dinosaurs as part of the increasingly popular ‘monster movies’ of the 1920's and 30's. Edwards was born in 1891 into a naval family and attended Weymouth College. In 1914 he joined the navy and served throughout World War One; after the war he found it difficult to adjust to civilian life and, among other professions, tried his hand at farming. His greatest passion was model making, being self taught in art and anatomy, and it was whilst staying with family in Sussex in the early 1920's that he met Dr F.A. Bather, Keeper of Geology at the British Museum. Dr. Bather was impressed by the detailed and accurate models that Edwards was producing and asked him to produce a series of prehistoric models for the British Museum (Natural History), now known as the Natural History Museum. Vernon Edwards was given access to the museum's collections and scientific monographs, so the models he produced were up to date reconstructions which were then authenticated by Dr. Bather and later by Dr. W.E. Swinton for scientific accuracy. His major work for the Museum was a series of dioramas which graced the 'Fossil Fish' gallery until the late 1970's.The models proved to be very popular and many museums around the world would order them to highlight their growing and increasingly popular collections of paleontological specimens; the largest collections in the UK can now be found in Bolton Museum and the Horniman Museum, London. At this time Edward’s work would also go on to be used for cigarette cards, as well as appearing in many popular magazines, such as The Illustrated London News and The Listener, but it was the publication of The Dinosaurs: A Short History of a Great Group of Extinct Reptiles, by W.E. Swinton, the first serious dinosaur book ever produced, that would place his work at the forefront of academic and popular imagination.Commercial production of the models was time-consuming, which made the models expensive, so very few were produced other than for museums. Being of plaster they were also fragile, so very few outside well-conserved museum collections survive undamaged. The items in this collection are a selection of original sketches and paintings by Vernon Edwards, master models from which moulds were taken, and stock models produced for sale by Gregory Bottley & Co.M.E.
