Later in life, he was a keen snooker player, frequently championing the Glasgow Art Club, and enjoyed Curling. He began studying at GSA in 1941 but his studies were interrupted when he was called up. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1943 and served in the Far East. He re-joined GSA in 1947 and was awarded his diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1949. That same year he won a £30 prize at the Royal Scottish Academy annual competitions. From 1949-1950 he attended the Jordanhill Teacher Training College. * JOHN CYRIL HARRISON (BRITISH 1898 - 1985), THE RAIDERS watercolour on paper, signed, titled label verso image size 33cm x 47cm, overall size 54cm x 67cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Label verso: Vicars Brothers, London. Handwritten label verso. Note: As a young boy John Cyril Harrison showed an outstanding gift for drawing and his later sketch books reveal a rare talent for accurate observation and draughtsmanship. J.C.Harrison studied at the Slade School of Art and improved his knowledge of anatomy through the practice of taxidermy. After that he moved to Norfolk where he became a keen supporter of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Although most of his pictures depict the Norfolk countryside with its birds, he was a frequent visitor to Scotland where he spent time studying, sketching and painting Golden Eagles, Grouse, Ptarmigan and Capercaillie. He also lived for a short while in Africa and enjoyed a limited time painting the wildlife there. J.C.Harrison was one of the most popular artists at the major sporting galleries and, in particular, The Tryon Gallery (London), where his exhibitions were eagerly awaited. Many of his paintings were so sought after, that collectors had to place their names in a hat in order to compete for the pictures they wanted. Harrison had a peerless reputation for painting birds in flight, indeed it was Aylmer Tryon himself who remarked that he thought that "John Cyril Harrison’s birds in flight surpassed even those of Archibald Thorburn". His drawings were remarkably accurate and he was blessed with a wonderfully fluent style which gave him the ability to combine realism with a hint of impressionism. That rare combination gave life and movement to his subjects, something which many collectors say no other bird artist has quite been able to match. For this reason many bird art enthusiasts rate his finest work as second to none. His pictures have consistently enjoyed great success in both auction houses and galleries and his work is seen in many important private collections. On 25th January 2012 Bonhams (Knightsbridge, London) sold a fine collection of watercolours by Harrison with the highest price for a single watercolour being £33,650, two other watercolours achieving £20,000 or more and twelve other single watercolour lots selling for £10,000 or more (all prices "premium").

Lot 2021

WILLIAM STEWART MACGEORGE RSA (SCOTTISH 1861-1934), SPRING BY THE BUCKLAND BURN oil on canvas, signed, titled label verso image size 51cm x 61cm, overall size 67cm x 77cm Framed. Label verso: Ian MacNicol, Glasgow. Provenance: From a Private Scottish Collection. Note: William Stewart MacGeorge was born in King Street, Castle Douglas on 1 April 1861. Like his friend E A Hornel, he was the son of a shoe-maker. His father was David MacGeorge who, according to the 1861 census, was the employer of three men and a boy. He attended the Free Church School in Castle Douglas, where a fellow pupil was S R Crockett. Crockett included his childhood friends as characters in his 1894 novel The Raiders, and captures MacGeorge’s happy disposition in the character Jerry McWhirter, “a roguish fellow that came to me to help with my land surveying but was keener to draw with colours on paper, the hues of the landscape and the sea. But he was dearest to us because of his continual merry heart, which did us good like a medicine.” MacGeorge entered the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh in 1880 along with fellow Galloway boys E A Hornel and Thomas Bromley Blacklock. In 1881 MacGeorge and Crockett were lodging together at 50 St Leonard Street (Edinburgh). MacGeorge was a successful student being a prize-winner in his second and third years at art school, and had a work shown in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1881. In 1883 MacGeorge and Hornel enrolled in Antwerp’s Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts, where MacGeorge again excelled under the rigorous discipline of Charles Verlat. On his return to Scotland, he enrolled in the RSA Life Schools in Edinburgh, where he continued his studies and embarked on his professional career. Thereafter, MacGeorge divided his life largely between Edinburgh and Galloway. He lived at 11 Melville Place, Edinburgh during the winter and had a studio in Kirkcudbright in the summer. Works such as A Galloway Peat Moss, displayed in the National Gallery of Scotland, is a fine example of a plein air realist work showing the influence of Jules Bastien–Lepage on Scottish artists while his Halloween, shown at the RSA in 1893, and to which he returned in his diploma work of 1911, is an example of his interest in childhood rituals. The painting was well received when shown later that year at the Paris Salon. W S MacGeorge was the most naturalistic of the Galloway artists. Informal scenes of children at play are typical of his work. Another favourite subject was the salmon fishers and their nets on the Dee at Kirkcudbright. Commenting on the RSA exhibition of 1910 The Studio observed, “One of the outstanding landscapes is Mr W S MacGeorge’s view of salmon fishers at dusk drawing their nets in the estuary of the Kirkcudbright Dee”. Relatively late in his life, MacGeorge married Mabel Victoria Elliot, a watercolour painter and widow of the artist Hugh Munro and settled at Gifford near Haddington. Ninety-nine of William Stewart MacGeorge's paintings are held in UK Public Collections. In The British & International Pictures Auction (McTear's) of 18th November 2020, lot 101, "The Hedgehog" a 51 x 61cm oil on canvas by W.S. MacGeorge sold for £12,000 (hammer).

Quarries of Cerbara. The Elements- trees, clouds, &c.,-silence...seem to have far more part with me or I with them, than mankind.(Edward Lear, 1862, quoted in Vivien Noakes, The Painter Edward Lear, 1991, p. 8)Edward Lear travelled to Rome for the first time in December 1837, and he spent most of his time in the city until 1848, returning subsequently in the winters of 1859-60, 1871 and 1877. Each summer the artist would spend time exploring other parts of Italy. Lear started painting in oil in 1838. His compositions were mostly created in his studio starting from his travel sketchbooks, as per the present lots. The artist was fascinated by the beauty and force of nature that led him to create the most poetic of views and landscapes. Rome and its surroundings acted as a great source of inspiration for Lear and lead him to the creation of his first travel book, Views in Rome and its environs, published in 1841.The present lots were painted starting from sketches made by Lear on the spot in the tufa quarries of Cervara, east of Rome, during winter 1859-60. He wrote 'there is a charm about this Campagna when it becomes all purple & gold, which it is difficult to tear one's self from. Thus-climate & beauty of atmosphere regain their hold on the mind-pen & pencil'1The present and subsequent lots were painted for Walter Congreve Esq., a friend and neighbour of Lear in San Remo, where the artist lived from 1870. Congreve sold Lear a plot adjacent to that of his Villa on which to build the first house the painter owned, Villa Emily. Congreve was the British Vice-Consul in San Remo from 1873 to 1885.A watercolour by Lear of this same area was sold in these rooms in 2014 (Bonhams Knightsbridge, 9 September 2014, lot 31, see fig 1).1 Edward Lear, Letter to Ann, 27 March 1848.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
