Rose & White Anenome - Sue Howells Original Watercolour - Mounted 52x69cmKnown for her interpretation of landscapes and buildings she has developed a bold and vivid style to express her view of the world and bring perspective to her painting. She works mainly in watercolours but loves to experiment with other media. She continues to broaden her range of subjects, maintaining her energy and colours by using an economy of brush strokes. Sue works as loosely as possible as watercolours can be controlled but never bullied. The colours she uses take on a wide range of hues when she adds light and dark, giving a translucent quality coupled with brush texture and an ability to use contrasting colour to very good effect. "Nothing in my pictures is real. Everything is off-kilter, which generates an energy that seems to appeal. The more I exaggerate my figures, the more popular they are. People can see what they want to see if pictures aren't literal.Sue Howells is one of the most collectable artists in the UK today. Entirely self taught, Sue has developed an instantly recognisable and unique style through which she creates her light hearted and witty snapshots of every day life. Charismatic figures bustle through the paintings creating an endearing narrative that draws you in. Sue's ability to create stunning depth by simply hinting at the form of figures and buildings enables you to feel as if you could step into each piece, a remarkable use of watercolour. With a catalogue of successful solo exhibitions it is no surprise that Sue has acquired a number of prestigious awards.Having previously being awarded The Fine Art Trade Guilds Best Selling Living Artis speaks volumes for the overwhelming popularity of her work

During this time he visited Andalucia with Gwen Raverat and later Connemara. For a comparable watercolour by the artist, also dated 1935, which depicts a Landscape in Italy. cf. The Peter Nahum Collection of British Surrealist and Avant-Garde Art 1930-1951, Christie's South Kensington 15th Nov 2006, lot 28. A watercolour dating from 1935 depicting a Landscape in Connemara is in the Trevelyan Family archive.'Spanish Silver Mines' dates from the period shortly before the artist became a confirmed Surrealist. At this time he was painting both in a conventional manner as well as creating imaginative Surrealist works. At the 1934 Bloomsbury Gallery exhibition he exhibited both types of oeuvre. Few of the Surrealist or abstract constructions sold, though he had more luck with his more conventional landscapes. Julian Trevelyan himself had referred at the time to these two competing themes in his life.. In the Bloomsbury exhibition catalogue introduction he had referred to them by concluding that 'I would have preferred not to mix my drinks, but to keep them well apart!'In time he would find a way of drawing these two worlds together and channelling them into an unusual and compelling output. 'By showing his Surrealist and conventional output together he was perhaps displaying something of a divided personality...it was a difficult road to tread' (Philip Trevelyan. 'Julian Trevelyan...Picture Language', p.70. Ashgate Publishing Ltd, 2013)
