Gillies whose influence can be seen in her choice of media. Painting mainly in watercolour from her home in Catterline, Annette was influential in the village's artistic success. In 1951, whilst recuperating from mumps, Joan Eardley was first introduced to the village by Annette. Together they found an ideal studio, a disused Customs and Exise watch house, which Annette purchased for less than £50. Annette planted a wild and rambling garden at "The Watchie" which delighted visitors to the studio. When Annette died in 1991, The Watchie was bequeathed to Lil Neilson on the understanding that it should continue to be used as a studio which it still is to this day.
