Louis Le Brocquy HRHA (1916-2012)DelacroixWatercolour, 60 x 44cm (23½ x 17¼'')Signed, inscribed 'For Anne in admiration and friendship' and dated 10th November 1981Provenance: A gift from the artist to Anne Crookshank, 10/11/1981 and thence by family descent.Louis le Brocquy’s (1916 - 2012) many series of portraits of celebrities both historic and contemporary were widely known and admired during his lifetime. However his small group of watercolour sketches of the 19th century French artist Eugene Delacroix are little known and rarely reproduced. Yet, they have a significance far beyond their recognisability because it was to the Delacroix Autoportrait dit au gilet vert in the Louvre in Paris, that le Brocquy owed his own ventures into self-portraiture.In Louis le Brocquy, Portrait Heads, A Celebration of the Artist's Ninetieth Birthday, (catalogue of the exhibition of the same name at the NGI in 2007), le Brocquy is quoted as saying that he resisted pressure to paint his own face from his wife, the painter Anne Madden and others, ‘because my interest was always in painting the other, ….my immediate stimulus happened to be a couple of studies in watercolour I made from Delacroix’s curiously moving self-portrait in the Louvre’. Despite this remark however, le Brocquy is also cited in the same publication, as saying that, ‘An artist tends to paint his self-portrait all the time, since even with a subject before him - what he tries to draw up from the depths of the paper or the canvas, lies really somewhere in his own head.’ That suggests that even though this watercolour sketch of Delacroix is a telling likeness of the great French Romantic as known from many portraits and photographs of him, there is an element of the self-portrait here too. It is of interest that le Brocquy did not attempt a series in oils of Delacroix but shifted his focus, instead, to his own face. This watercolour sketch of Delacroix comes from the collection of Anne Crookshank, the inaugural Head of the History of Art department in Trinity College who died late last year. Anne Crookshank had been a friend of the artist’s since the 1950s when she bought his work, and the work of other emerging contemporary artists, notably William Scott, for the collection at the Ulster Museum in Belfast. An inscription by the artist , dedicates the Delacroix portrait to her ‘in admiration and love’. Elsewhere le Brocquy recorded his great regard for her achievements in Ulster and her unfailing support for living artists through her work for the Rosc exhibitions and her teaching. The painting of Delacroix, connected as it is to an important development in le Brocquy’s own career, was a fitting gift to the country’s leading art historian and a friend whom le Brocquy thought of as ‘a great Irishwoman’. ALEXANDRE BORISOVICH SEREBRIAKOFF (RUSSIAN 1907-1995) PROJECT FOR THE DECORATION OF LA MAISON A LA VIELLE RUSSIE signed, inscribed and dated '18 Mai 1953,' pen and ink and gouache 49.5cm x 67cm (19.5in x 26.25in) and five further projects for the decoration of La Vielle Russie (6) Provenance: Russian Works of Art from the Collection of The Late Jan Bethge Esq. Note: Alexandre Serebriakoff was a celebrated Russian-French illustrator, particularly known for his paintings of interiors. Serebriakoff was born in 1907 in Neskuchnoe, in the Kurskiy region (modern Ukraine). His mother, Zinaida Serebriakova was herself a prominent artist, who originated from a famous family of architects, sculptors and painters from Benois-Lancere. In 1905 she had married the engineer Boris Serebriakoff. Having trained in Saint Petersburg, Italy and Paris, she became one of the most prominent "World of Art" [Mir Iskusstva] painters of pre-revolutionary Russia. The family's situation changed drastically with the 1917 Revolution. In 1919 Boris Serbriakoff was imprisoned by the Bolshevik government and died in captivity, leaving Zinaida with four children and a sick mother in the war-torn and starving Ukraine. In 1924 however, Zinaida was commissioned to undertake a large project in Paris. She initially planned to return to Russia after the completion of her work, but it was unwise to do so due to the country's continuing political instability. Only two of her four children Alexandre and Ekaterina, managed to escape to France and the family would not be reunited for decades, when in 1960 Zinaida met her two other children after 36 years of separation. Alexandre Serebriakoff remained in Paris for the rest of his life. A largely self-trained artist, he adopted the tradition of the "World of Art" movement and predominantly worked in watercolour and gouache, producing highly realistic interiors in a traditional style. He also worked as a book illustrator with French and British publishers, and collaborated with the renowned grocers Maison Fauchon, along with French cinema and fashion magazines. Serebriakoff became well-known as a specialist interior painter, specifically for his paintings of Paris' hôtels particuliers, painting Daisy Fellowes' rooms at the Paris Ritz in 1948 and the Parisian apartment of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Le Château de Groussay. During his lifetime the artist showed his work in numerous group exhibitions in France and Belgium. It is known that Alexandre's sister Catherine, who also worked as an interior painter, collaborated with her brother on many projects, however, her signature often does not appear on the artworks, as she preferred Alexandre to sign the paintings himself. This series of drawings and watercolours were created as part of a collaboration between Alexandre Serebriakoff and the Paris-based Russian antique dealers, A La Vielle Russie and are records of the decorative scheme Serebriakoff created for their shop windows and first-floor library. A La Vieille Russie, was founded in Kiev in 1851 but left the turmoil of the Revolution to be re-established in Paris in the 1920's by the descendants of the original owner. In its original incarnation, Carl Faberge, who held a premises nearby, was a client. The business continued to flourish in Paris, with many high-profile clients including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. It ultimately became a focal point for socialising among European high-society. At the start of the Second World War, the gallery relocated again, to New York City, taking over premises in the Rockefeller Centre. In America it became the market leader for Fabergé and Russian Imperial treasures, assisting in the formation of some major museum-quality collection. Still a family business, A La Vieille Russie continues to deal in fine art and antiques from Fifth Avenue, New York.

Exceptional Photograph, Artwork and Ephemera Album compiled by William Leighton, who served with the Artist Rifles in the Great War Accompanied by his War Medals including 1914 Star. This Regiment evolved from the 38 Middlesex Rifle Volunteers and was essentially formed from Artists, Actors & Writers etc and included William Morris, Paul Nash and Wilfred Owen in its ranks. William provides a very well crafted illustrated journey through his war service from the train about to leave London, embarking on HM Troopship "Australind" in October, 1914, via Bailleul to their positions near Neuve Eglise. All are very well illustrated with line drawings and watercolour paintings and with many photographs and ephemera, together with two excellent coloured painted Trench maps of the Menin Road and Richebourg in 1915. His unit the 2nd Battalion (28 London Regt) is hard hit and he sketches where two Sergeants are killed. He is transferred to the MG School at Wisques, near St Omer and the illustrations of the Barracks are very well executed, with a particularly outstanding coloured painting of St Omer, seen in the distance from Wisques. There is also a particularly good group photograph of the Staff at the school, flanked by two Vickers machine guns. Promoted to Sergeant Instructor William is sent home with Tuberculosis of the lung. Presumably recovered he is transferred to Egypt and his journey is again well supported with drawings and paintings. Finally he joins the Royal Navel Gun Station on Parliament Hill in July 1917 and again the drawings, paintings and photographs provide a unique record of his time in London. A number of other photographs and documents are tipped-in, notably a well executed painting contrasting the wasteland of the trenches with the relative tranquillity of Parliament Hill and this has been signed by the members of the detachment. In summary a unique record of war service supported by a considerable number of original artworks, photographs and documents and his medals, etc., in a large and attractive "crocodile skin" Album.
