PAUL NASH: A hand written letter in black ink on thin grey headed note paper, written on both sides and around edges and dated August (1944), to Gillian (Barnard). The letter details origins of "The Flight of The Magnolia" painting, a proposed trip to the South Coast and other intimate details together with the original gloss black and white photograph referred to in the letter (possibly taken) by PAUL NASH of a watercolour of the painting, adhered to a piece of folded paper and inscribed in pencil in the hand of PAUL NASH '"Flight of the Magnolia" watercolour 1944 for Gillian from Paul' is included with this lot: 106 Banbury Road, Oxford. August Lovely Gillian, Do you remember the great white magnolia flower you gave me almost a year ago and took it away to draw? It was a beautiful affair with the most intoxicating perfume which billowed even into my bedroom from the landing in the Antelope or wherever we stayed that night in Dorchester. I just had time to make a sketch of its main forms and make a note of its colours then I had to give it to the chambermaid, who was carried away with emotion & took a great sniff of it which of course practically doped her for the day. For months the drawing remained just another study yet I felt quite certain it had a more important destiny - then just recently I arrived at my 'aerial flowers' series. I don't remember quite why or how - anyhow the magnolia became air borne & it took to the element as a duck to the water. I wish you could see its colours. It floats in a rose sky with sunset clouds. Above the sky is blue with white clouds but that doesn't mean much for the colours are blended & alternated in the scheme of blues and rose, white, pale green and the colours of the flower & its leaves yellow whites & shiny yellow green. Well I thought you might like this photograph & if you like the picture feel you helped to make it - or indeed caused it! It is going to New York with four other new designs about aerial flowers & so on but also it will be one of the illustrations to a piece of writing I have done for a new magazine just coming out Counterpoint. All this coincides with this letter I have been going to write you begging you to help me get a perch of some sort where Margaret & I can have a short holiday. We are both pretty well exhausted - she is really going through a breakdown on her feet. I have secured some rooms in an hotel outside Cheltenham of which I have good reports for 3 weeks from October 12. But if I could get anything else preferably in our beloved Dorset & still more preferably in your vicinity I should cancel the Gloster ones. We had ideas about Weymouth which we fell in love with last year. We have ........ whether hotels are possible then or too costly. Or I have memories of a place at Corfe - decent food and civilized? facing down the main street. One could get into Swanage, one could feel the autumn sun & get a cab out to you now & then??? Gillian can you help me. Im really rather desperate. Could you do a little telephoning on my account and allow me to refund you. My idea is to get away end of September if possible & spin out a month perhaps part at Corfe part at Weymouth with an option of staying on at Weymouth d'you see. Prices limit - about 6 gns each per week. Between ourselves I need a change very badly. The only break we have both had save a few days in London all through the war was that heaven sent tour last year with Lance. Goodbye dear Gillian do your best for your devoted Paul.

The vendor came across them recently in their mother's effects.

Cricket at Hertingfordbury c 1907 - watercolour 8x14 inches. Mounted, framed and glazed. A preliminary painting for "The Cricket Match" which hangs in Wakefield City Gallery. See The John Player Art of Cricket illustration 107. Gore (1878 to 1914) was an eminent British landscape artist and the first President of the Camden Town Group.
Original Watercolour Painting by David Weston 'Elizabeth At Mountsorrel' showing the loco at Mount Sorrel Quarry. Measuring 22in x 15in and dated on the rear 1967. Framed and glazed. The painting is featured in David Weston's book 'For The Love of Steam' on page 55 and a copy of the book, printed in 1988, accompanies.
HENRY E.O. MURRAY-DIXON (BRITISH, 1885-1917) A bird of prey swooping on a rabbit, watercolour and bodycolour, signed and dated 'Jan. 14th 1901' lower right, 45cm x 29cm. Note: This painting, executed when the artist was just sixteen years of age, is perhaps the earliest of his works to be offered at auction. Henry Edward Otto Murray-Dixon was killed, as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st/4th Bn Seaforth Highlanders, at Vimy Ridge, 10th April 1917, aged 31. A tribute was published in The Field, 23rd March 1918, in which Archibald Thorburn was quoted as saying that Murray-Dixon's work 'showed careful study... from life', while J.G. Millais, who commissioned him to paint certain illustrations for his work on British Diving Ducks, commented that 'his excellent draughtsmanship, delicate handling of details, and close observation proved him to be one who in time would have taken a high place among artists of bird life'.
FREDERICK TUCKER (1880-1915); watercolour "Spanish Head, Isle of Man", coastal landscape, signed and dated 1897, inscribed on label verso, also bearing John Paris of Liverpool label verso, 90 x 60cm, framed and glazed. CONDITION REPORT Significant sun damage to upper half of painting which has resulted in discolouration, also evidence of foxing.
EDITH MARTINEAU (1842-1909); watercolour "The Herd's Hill, from Rothiemurchus, Aviemore", landscape with path leading towards mountains beyond, apparently unsigned, inscribed on label verso with artists address also bearing Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours remnants label verso and John Paris of Liverpool label verso, 25 x 35cm, framed and glazed. * ROSEMARY BEATON, VILLAGE STREETS, EYMET watercolour on paper, signed 20cm x 27.5cm Framed and under glass Note: Rosemary Beaton studied at The Glasgow School of Art (1981-86) at a time when great emphasis was put on teaching drawing and highly figurative painting was re emerging. She was in 1st year when Stephen Campbell; Adrian Wiszniewski ; Ken Currie and Peter Howson were in their 4th year. Among her contemporaries were Mary Maclean; Alison Harper; Lesley Burr; Margaret Hunter and Helen Flockhart. Whilst still a student in third year she was the first Scot and youngest person to win the prestigious John Player National Portrait Award (now BP) in 1984, followed by GSA Alumni Alison Watt in 1987 and Allan Ramsay in 1988.
Robert O. Lenkiewicz [1941-2002]- Diogenes and Belle at Prayer with Chairs:- Project 2. Death and The Maiden. 1974 oil on canvas 196 x 214cm. * Provenance. The Lenkiewicz Foundation Collection. *Notes Exhibited. Begun in the autumn of 1974 after a surprise visit to Plymouth by Lenkiewicz' muse Belle Pecorini, this painting was completed too late to feature in the first showing of its Project on the theme of Death and the Maiden. Nevertheless, Lenkiewicz was able to submit it, unsuccessfully, to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1975. The work was shown at Lenkiewicz's gallery called The Fool in Clifton Street in 1974, its one room more than large enough for the seventy pictures, many of which introduced a new turn in the artist's method: 'the aesthetic note' - smaller works, usually executed in watercolour or gouache on paper on which were inscribed notes written in the artist's hand. These works, numbering almost fifty, were later bound into a large folio with many more notes and annotated sketches of memento mori in art across world cultures, including sketches he made during visits to the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection. This folio is titled Death & The Maiden Paintings: R.O. Lenkiewicz and is in the collection of The Lenkiewicz Foundation. The vagrant Diogenes, Edwin Mackenzie, featured extensively in this Project. In The Putrefaction of Diogenes he himself appeared as a memento mori - a gruesome reminder that death is inevitable - but here the motif appears in the classical form of the skull, reinforced by Lenkiewicz' favourite visual metaphor for absence and loss - the empty chair. The subject matter of the exhibition was based on Lenkiewicz's observation that: 'An intense aesthetic/personality interest in another person seems always to carry with it the inevitability of change. In this change we witness the death of love and the decay of our interest. The undermining influence of this experience hints at the contact between 'Death and the Maiden' - between 'Love and Tragedy' - between life and us.' Literature R.O. Lenkiewicz (1997). HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. An original 10.5 x 14 watercolour painting, purported to be by Adolf Hitler, unsigned, the image depicting a clock tower, with various trees in the foreground. Annotated in contemporary pencil to the verso, in German, Stift bei Wels 18 Februar 1921 Adolf Hitler, indicating that the subject of the painting is the Wels Abbey in Austria. Contained in a later cream matt and framed and glazed in a modern frame to an overall size of 16.5 x 20. Some light age wear, about VG Provenance: According to information supplied by the vendor, all of which is documented in various newspaper articles (copies of which are included with the lot) the present painting was gifted by Hitler to Herman Goering. It was later to come into the possession of former Luftwaffe pilot Karol Bachraty (father of the vendor) following his escape from a Russian Concentration Camp in 1945. Bachraty made his way to Italy, accompanied by other Third Reich officers. Bachraty was to spend the rest of his life in Chile where he encountered other former officers and together they formed a small association. Bachraty was elected with the chief responsibility of taking care of the paintings, some of which the colleagues intended to sell in order to fund a care home for former officers. £6000-8000
