British School (19th Century) Portrait Miniature of Evan Nepean, in Royal Navy uniform, watercolour on ivory, 8 x 6 cm, frame 12 x 10 cmHandwritten label to verso 'Evan Nepean commander R.N. 15 Augt 1785 - 20 Ap 1864 (later Rear Admiral) painted between 22 Oct 1823 and 18 Dec 1827'Note: Evan Nepean was the second son of Lieutenant-General Nicholas Nepean and nephew of the First Baronet, Sir Evan Nepean, First Secretary and then Commisioner of the Admiralty. He entered the Navy in 1798. In 1815 he became a Lieutenant and in 1823, a Commander. In 1841 he became a Captain and retired from service in 1862 as a Rear Admiral. Between 1839 and 1841 he was commander of H.M.S.Comus, an eighteen gun sloop on the West India station where he was principally employed in affording protection to British trade during the revoloutionary unrest in New Grenada. In 1844 he sold a large and significant collection of mainly pottery pieces, from Isla Sacrificios, off the Coast of Vera Cruz in West Mexico, to the British Museum.Ivory Exemption certificate number: XA4GBSEU Condition:Thank you for your interest in lot 89. The painting is framed under glazing – not examined external to the frame. The ivory appears to be in good condition- no obvious evidence for splitting or warping. The paint has some fading to the background, and to the navy blue of the jacket. The frame has some general wear and tear and the frame rest is frayed and a little loose at the join.

Dame Laura Knight DBE, RA (1877-1970) - Little Dutch Girl, signed, watercolour, 35.5 x 18.5cm   Painted in 1906 on the artist's second painting sojourn at Laren, Holland Provenance: Laura Knight's sister-in-law Agnes ("Tag") Knight by 1907; with Mary Lindsay (nee Eady), Lady Monteath (1905-1994) c1941; anon sale Bonhams, 11 November 2008 to R John Croft FCA, great nephew of Dame Laura Knight.  Laura and Harold Knight first visited Laren in 1905 having been invited to join the British artist Henry Silkstone Hopwood (1860-1914) for a six weeks' painting trip. The Knights lodged at the "vrouw Kan".  Laura and Harold Knight revisited Laren in Spring 1906, having purchased a six months' return ticket for £1 at Tower Wharf.  Following the success of the Leicester Galleries' exhibition of that year, they returned to Laren in 1907; this time staying at one of the larger farms outside the village, but taking their meals at the widow Kan's boarding house. In her autobiography, Laura Knight describes a game the Americans staying at the artists' colony played: a version of baseball that became the couple's favourite exercise, the last game being played on Christmas day 1907. Laura and Harold Knight left Laren for the last time in January 1908. Good condition

As the boy in The Lesson is a few years older, it would date this painting to about 1895." This charming watercolour has not been examined out of the frame but an even covering of light foxing can be seen. We can see no other damage and there are no signs of restoration.

Robert Taylor Pritchett (1828 - 1907), 'Pen and Pencil Scraps from Belgium' - a sketchbook and journal of the artist's travels to Calais and Belgium, 1850, 31 pencil and watercolour sketches mounted in a full leather-bound book, with handwritten text, (five further sketches are missing), sketches around 14 x 19 cm each, volume 27 x 22 cm Before becoming an established artist and illustrator, Pritchett worked as a gun manufacturer at his father’s firm in Enfield. In 1853 he created the Pritchett bullet alongside William Ellis Metford which awarded the firm fame and success. However, the collapse of the East India Company in 1858 greatly reduced the firm’s productivity, with the former being one of the company’s primary customers.Pritchett took the opportunity to build a career as an illustrator working for Punch magazine and the publishing house Cassell, Petter, and Galpin between 1863 and 1869. He won the patronage of Queen Victoria in 1869 after she bought a painting that had been commissioned from the art dealership Thomas, Agnew & Sons. He went on to produce many watercolour illustrations of intimate events within the Royal Family up until Queen Victoria’s death.Before his career as an artist or his invention of the Pritchett bullet, he travelled to Belgium, producing this handwritten book he titled "Pen and Pencil Scraps from Belgium” in 1850. The work produced most likely went on to influence his entries to the 1851 and 1852 exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art, which included a view of Belgium.

A collection of 30 circa mid 19th Century well executed pen & ink caricature/cartoon sketches on cards, each card approx. size 6 x 9cm, several of the sketches satirical in nature, including two depicting Benjamin Disraeli and each captioned/titled in pen & ink "Ministerial Crisis February 1851", the first with m/s pen & ink caption beneath "Mr Disraeli, on hearing of the ministerial crisis, immediately waited upon fortune, but was not favoured with an interview.-", the second "On hearing that Lord Stanley had gone a second time to the palace, mr Disraeli took his seat - and the oaths - as "gentleman in waiting" before the fire-", others satirising dentistry showing gruesome treatments, several others cherubs, animal, people etc. Provenance: cleared from a deceased estate in North Norfolk around 25 years ago, which included a body of student art work from the 1830s, in a mix of pen and ink, chalk and watercolour. It can be traced to the Norwich School because one of the subjects was a direct copy of a Norwich School painting of 1831 now in the museum in Norwich and which would have been created for copying: as was the custom at the time. These miniature items are from later in the artists life. (30)

Inscription reading ' To Al from CMR. 1888 ' to bottom left.  RUSSELL, CHARLES MARION, artist; born 19th March 1864 in St Louis, Missouri, to Charles Silas Russell (1833–1917) and Mary Mead Russell (1835–1895). His first visit to Canada was a key event in Russell’s life. He rode north from Helena, Montana, with two friends in late May 1888. Russell spends about three months in Alberta, and reportedly spends time with local Blood (Kainai) Indians. Russell returned to Helena in September, leaving behind some sketches, a finished painting of a bear, and, most impressively, an ambitious oil that he gave to Blunt, Canadian mounted police bringing in Red Indian prisoners, recording an incident witnessed on the ride north in May. In later paintings and drawings he would honour the mounted police as symbols of justice on the Canadian frontier, a notable subject for an artist who ignored the United States army’s role in “winning the west” and sympathized with the Indians in their resistance to white advance.

Noel Henry Leaver (British, 1889-1951) - A Scene of a citygate - a watercolour on paper painting. Signed lower left. Framed. Measures approx. 36cm x 52cm. Noel Leaver - Noel Henry Leaver (1889 - 1951). Born in Austwick, Yorkshire in 1889 but is better known as a Burnley artist. He started his training as an architect and became one of the youngest ever pupils of the Royal College of Art when he started his studies at 16. His earlier paintings are softer and looser than his later more accomplished works, but still show his fine understanding of detail and construction. Particularly known for his treatment of skies. Leaver won numerous scholarships and travel bursaries and used them to travel to visit Europe and Northern Africa. His earlier works in which he is still developing his style are usually signed in mixed lower & upper case Noel H LEAVER ARCA. In later life he usually signed in capitals NOEL H LEAVER, dropping the ARCA. Leaver is probably most famous for his Middle Eastern views. These are his North African based works with their distinctive vivid blue skies, arches and mosques. He is known to have widely exhibited throughout the North East, North West and Yorkshire.
