India – Pirates fine ms letter dated 1788 discussing the situation in India 3pp 4to with integral address panel bearing the incorrectly spelt ‘SWANZEA’ mark : ‘...India is all in flames at the behaviour of the Judges of the Supream Court of Judicature who by their tyranny & opposition have roused the Gentlemen in the Civil Department of the E[ast] I[dia] Company’s service to petition to the Houses of Parliament for a redress of their complaints – the Judges it seems have treated the unanimous remonstrations of the English with sovereign contempt denied them the Right of Trial by Juries sneered at Magna Charta from the Bench in short their whole conduct & tenor being bent in the loss of that country to this & all its treasures. Such is the present dissatisfaction & such the dreadful appearance the Gentry subscribed £10000 in 24 hours to defray the expenses of a Capt Goulding to come over land by Persia Arabia Turkey Hungary & Germany to lay these memorials before the legislature...what scoundrels compose the present sett of ministry wanting to enslave all the corners of the Earth where the name of Englishman is known...’ Elsewhere in the letter the author makes reference to Privateers: ‘...I find you have got Privateers on your coast as well as we. Our Black Princes & Princesses they have nearly ruined us all...’ It is not clear what the dispute in India was but 1788 saw the start of the trial of Warren Hastings.
