A very rare Dutch stipple-engraved facet stem wine glass by J Wolff, 1770-1780The generous round funnel bowl engraved with a seated cross-legged hatted gentleman playing the lute, serenading a lady who has an open book on her lap to his left, both in seventeenth-century attire, with an ornamental vase of flowers atop a pedestal between them, a faint castle in the distance, the figures flanked by shrubs, the lower part to the bowl cut with thumbnail facets, on an hexagonal facet-cut stem and conical foot, 14.2cm highFootnotes:The identity of J Wolff is unknown, but if he was a relative of the renowned master engraver David Wolff it can only be his brother Jacob, born in 1742, see Frans Smit, Dutch Eighteenth-Century Dutch Stipple-Engravings on Glass (1993), p.17. A total of just twenty glasses by this engraver are recorded by Smit, including two bearing the signature 'J Wolff', one of which is dated 1780. Two more examples can be added to those recorded by Smit, including a goblet sold by Bonhams on 21 June 2022, lot 132 and another on 20 June 2023, lot 101.J Wolff stippled in a very distinctive style with backgrounds often sparsely dotted and darker objects frequently left almost devoid of stippling, instead delineated by outlines. The style of the engraving on the present lot is therefore characteristic of this engraver. He specialised in depictions of country folk and rural life. The present lot is unrecorded by Smit and therefore represents an important addition to this artist's oeuvre. Two examples with related scenes depicting a hatted man seated on a bench and serenading a lady with a lute are recorded by Smit (1993) on p.147, nos.Eb.24, Eb.25 and Eb.26. The latter of these was sold by Bonhams on 20 June 2023, lot 100.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
