19th Century Irish Oak Monks Bench Box Settle with Mac Namara Clan Crest This meticulously carved Irish Oak Monks Bench Box Settle hails from the 19th century, complete with the distinguished Mac Namara Clan's family crest. Showcasing the clan's motto, "Virtute Et Valor," the settle tells a tale of heritage and grandeur. The MacNamara family were descendants of the Uí Caisin lineage of the Dál gCais. They were counted among the most influential families in the Kingdom of Thomond and held the prestigious title of Lords of Clancullen in County Clare. The McNamara surname comes from the chieftain Cumara, whose name also translates to Conmara, meaning "hound of the sea." The familial name Mac Conmara, understood as the son of Cumara, has undergone minimal modifications over centuries. It's preserved in contemporary times as MacConmara in the Irish context and Mac (or Mc) Namara in English. The settle reveals signs of age and use, precisely as one might expect from an artefact of its time. The settle measures 134cm in height, 133.5cm in width, and 55cm in depth.

Picton was known as a particularly cruel and brutal governor who lined his pockets by trading in both slaves and land. Despite many allegations against him, he was only tried on one charge, that of having unlawfully used torture in order to extract a confession from the 14 year old Luisa Calderon. He was found guilty, however this was overturned on appeal, on the basis that Trinidad was still ruled by Spanish law at this time, which allowed the use of torture.
