Eleanor Esmonde-White (South African 1914-2007) TWO FIGURES signed oil on canvas 33,5 by 43,5cm Eleanor Esmonde-White was an accomplished artist. She lectured at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town and was a memberof the New Group from 1938 to 1954. In her 1977 exhibition at Die Kunskamer the artist included work that she had produced during a visit to theisland of Corfu in Greece. It was in this exhibition that the artist established women, often involved in daily tasks, as her primary subject matter.In 1981 Esmonde-White joined her Greek husband in permanent residence in Corfu, where she observed women in their domestic work, engagingwith each other during their busy day, working the land while their husbands spent time in the Greek cafes.During this time Esmonde-White regularly sent her work back to South Africa where it was exhibited by her three agents, Louis Schachat at DieKunskamer in Cape Town, David Zetler of the Hout Street Gallery in Paarl and Leon Strydom in George, who ensured that her output was enjoyedby a South African audience.Two Figures depicts two women seated on a bench and may very well have been produced during her time in Greece, as the two women bothwear the white headscarves of the women she so often painted. Both women are slouched in their posture, as though they are having a rest duringa busy day of work. The women facing the viewer is composed with her hands clasped in her lap. She looks to the left as if momentarily lost inthought, a quick respite before they tend to the rest of her tasks. Esmonde-White's signature use of black outlines silhouetting the figures and herdeliberate brushstrokes are clearly demonstrated in this work.Raymond, S., Eleanor Esmonde-White, Main Street Publishing, Paarl, 2015
