AN ITALIAN SMALL RED AND WHITE CARRARA MARBLE BENCH 19TH CENTURY Rectangular seat on twin scrolling leaf carved bases with paw feet, stepped plinth bases the seat 89cm wide, 21.5cm deep, 62cm high overall Condition Report: Wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Small loss to natural veining of top, sits well but currently has wooden fillet under top to one end to ensure stability and level seat- will benefit from mortaring carefully prior to domestic use- currently in three separate sectionsBase with some rubbing to carved edges Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. AN OAK AND BURR OAK SETTLE 18TH CENTURY 138cm high, 186cm wide, 57cm deep Condition Report: Old marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use.Old cracks, chips and splits and old losses. Old worm damage and old fragmentary loss in some areas as a result. Various old repairs including patches to the seat. Good colour and patina throughout. The surfaces of the arms are more worn and the base of the back as one would expect from use. There are two later elements of timber at each end of the reverse of the back to strengthen. These are attached with nails. They appear to be later but have age. There is also a later strip of timber attached to the lowest edge of the reverse of the bench. Nails and screws of various age (mainly 18th or 19th century) secure elements throughout. Of solid useable structure overall. There is some movement to the high back when weight is applied to it as one would expect. Please refer to all additional images available via email for visual reference to condition. (37 x 23cm.)Bonhams Knightsbridge, 14th December 1998, lot 184.Dr Mill notes:This model marked a radical change in microscope design and is the forerunner of modern construction. All the focussing controls were brought down below the stage level so that they fell readily to hand with the arms resting on the bench.The focussing controls moved the entire limb giving the stand a massive solidity and smoothness. It is interesting that in contrast to the overwhelming success of the design Zeiss were initially nervous about introducing it in the early 1930s.This example is signed Carl Zeiss Jena and has serial no 259528. Serial numbers in this range where in use in 1934.ref. Zeiss catalogue 1934 pp.43-6Fine overall condition.
