A Louet Vertical Plough, of lacquered birch plywood and ash hardwood construction with HSS steel cutting blade, adjustable gauges, and bench clamps, dimensions 62 x 42cm In excellent condition, rarely used. Currently retailing for over £600. Description from Louet brochure, "This cutting tool enables the user to make a clean cut through paper up to a maximum thickness of 45mm and 430mm length. With the clamps it can be attached to a table. The easy-to-operate knife holder runs smoothly over a rail on ball bearings. The cutting blade is made of high grade HSS steel and can be moved down the paper by adjusting a knurled nut at the top while cutting. The guide rail is extremely stable and will not bend. It guides the blade perfectly straight and vertical through the paper. The result is a smooth cut without mark which can sometimes appear when cut by machine. The tip of the blade runs into a nylon strip in the worktable which ensures that the blade remains sharp. When the nylon strip becomes deeply notched, it can be easily removed, turned and installed again. Two springs support the guide rail and allows it to remain open while the paper is positioned onto the work table. Two large knurled nuts positioned below the work table can be tightened to clamp the paper securely in place while cutting. A graduated (metric) ruler is located on a right angle with the guide rail and acts as a stopper for the paper stack. A parallel guide is attached to the ruler and can be positioned as needed. The cutting blade runs precisely at the edge of the guide rail." (1)

Garden Bench: A rare Dalkeith foundry Louis XV style cast iron seat circa 1870 with diamond registration stamp 188cm.; 74ins long The design is registered for the Dalkeith Ironworks, Dalkeith, Scotland. The company was certainly operating from circa 1810 until the end of the nineteenth century, and may well have been founded by David Mushet the famous metallurgist, born in Dalkeith in 1772 and brought up as an iron founder. An advertisement in a 1860 directory presents the company as ‘W R Mushet, Dalkeith Iron Works’. Apart from stoves and garden seats the company also offered fountains, metallic greenhouses and arbours. (See engraving).
Garden Bench: A pair of rare Val d’Osne foundry cast iron seats circa 1870 150cm.; 59ins long A similar but not identical seat is illustrated in the late 19th century Val d’Osne catalogue. Founded by J.P.Andre in 1835 and based at the Val d’Osne, in the Haute-Marne, the company took over rival firms such as Barbezat and Ducel becoming the largest and most prolific foundry of decorative and sculptural cast iron in France. The company exhibited at the Great Exhibitions of 1851 and 1862 as well as the Chicago Great Exhibition of 1893. Unlike the English Coalbrookdale Foundry which specialized in decorative cast iron seats, very few seat patterns were produced by the French foundry, even though their extensive catalogue ran to three volumes (see engraving).
