Y AN INDIAN HARDWOOD AND IVORY INLAID CABINET GUJERAT OR SINDH, LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY The doors enclosing nine drawers, the inlay to five sides, on a walnut notch carved stand in the Cotswold School taste The cabinet 25cm high, 38cm wide, 29cm deep; the stand 75cm high, 38.5cm wide, 30.5cm deep Provenance:Purchased by George Byng Esq MP (1764-1847) and by descent until sold, Christie's, London, Two Late Regency Collectors: Philip John Miles and George Byng, 9th June 2005, lot 173 where purchased by Robert Kime. Literature: 5 St James's Square, 1847 Inventory: 'BACK DRAWING ROOM a small India Cabinet enclosed by 2 doors and drawers inside.' Cabinets of this general type, inlaid with flowers in ivory onto a hardwood ground were made in north western India, in the provinces of Gujarat or Sindh, from the late 16th century. A similar cabinet is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, but with a fall front. The use of doors in this example may denote a European commission, reflecting as it does the more usual use of doors on a cabinet (see: https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O115588/cabinet-unknown/ and A. Jaffer, Luxury Goods from India..., London, 2002, no. 25). The cabinet was bought by George Byng, whose collecting reflected high fashions of the 1820s -1840s, in company with great collectors such as George Watson Taylor, William Beckford and the king, George IV. Byng's manuscript 'List of Furniture, Porcelain, Paintings &C. purchased by George Byng for Wrotham Park, 1816-43', testifies to his avariciousness for superb objects, paintings and furniture. He lived at Wrotham Park, begun by his great-uncle, the unfortunate naval officer executed following the loss of Menorca in 1757, completed by his father George Byng (d. 1789) and extended by his son, the collector, George Byng MP (d. 1847). Saleroom notice:This lot contains elephant ivory and is therefore subject to both CITES regulations and the UK Ivory Act 2018. Goods containing African elephant ivory cannot be imported to the USA, while other countries have in place wide-ranging restrictions on exporting and importing property containing elephant ivory. Prospective buyers are advised to familiarise themselves with the export and import restrictions prior to bidding. We will not be able to cancel your purchase if your lot may not be exported, imported or it is seized for any reason by a government authority. Dreweatts have applied for a de minimis exemption licence for the ivory in this lot (Ref: KCT1C37J) Condition Report: Correction to the original catalogue description - there are seven interior drawers, not nine as stated in the catalogue description, as the top drawer is inlaid to simulate three drawers but is in fact one long drawer.Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. There are some losses, restorations and observations including:The ivory has a light applied staining.Overall there are wood and ivory veneers that are missing. There are some areas, including the lower border of the back that are painted instead of inlaid - this is probably a repaired section, and there are other small areas of repair including some filler. The gilt metal escutcheons and hinges have good engraved detail, as do the ivory flowers which are finely engraved to the front, sides and the interior, though not to the back. The base is missing a section of the border.A notch to the edge of one door and a later lock to the other door, there is no key. There is some evidence of worm. Some drawers are missing handles. There is some later black paint around the edge of the interior. The stand shows few signs of wear. Please see the additional condition report photographs as a visual reference of condition. GEORGE FREDERICK WATTS (ENGLISH 1817-1904) HAYSTACKS (STUDY ON BRIGHTON DOWNS) Oil on canvas 33.5 x 65.5cm (13 x 25¾ in.) Provenance: With the artist 1887 Given by the artist to Frederic, Lord Leighton His sale, Christie's, 14 July 1896 (3rd day), lot 343 Where bought by Sir William Agnew, Bt., for 290 gns Still with Sir William Agnew in 1905 Christie's, London, 11 June 2002, lot 118, where purchased by Robert Kime Exhibited: Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1883, no. 59, as Study on Brighton Downs Manchester, Royal Jubilee Exhibition, 1887, Fine Art Section, no. 249, as Haystacks, lent by the artist Royal Academy, London, Exhibition of Works by the late George Frederick Watts, R.A., O.M and the late Frederick Sandys, Winter 1905, no. 26, as Landscape, lent by Sir William Agnew City Art Gallery, Manchester, G.F Watts Memorial Exhibition, 1905, no. 148, as Landscape, lent by Sir William AgnewLiterature: Times, 30 April, 1883, p.4 Mrs Watts's Manuscript catalogue, vol. I, p.16 as Brighton Downs The present lot was painted in 1882 and exhibited the following year at the Grosvenor Gallery as Study on Brighton Downs, although the name Haystacks was already given to it when it was noticed briefly in a review in the Times, and Watts himself seems to have adopted this title later. No doubt the subject was one he had seen when travelling to or from the town, where he had a winter studio from 1876. Like so many of Watts's landscapes, Haystacks (Study on Brighton Downs) is astonishingly minimal. No other Victorian artist made more daring experiments of this kind; they are one of his work's most original aspects. Haystacks as a subject seem to have been a constant source of wonder and inspiration to Watts. The picture is reminiscent of Evening (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), a small panel of 1864 in which he introduced some examples he had seen in the vicinity of Little Holland House, Kensington. However, unlike the Oxford picture which has overt literary associations; an armed knight is seen riding by, and the picture's alternative title, 'All the air a solemn stillness holds', taken from Thomas Gray's Elegy, this picture focuses attention on the haystacks alone. Characteristically though, Watts still manages to suggest a symbolist dimension. Stark as it is, the image has none of the objectivity of a painting of a haystack by for example, Monet. Watts must have thought highly of the picture to have sent it to the Grosvenor, and it was still in his possession when he lent it to the Royal Jubilee Exhibition at Manchester in 1887. He subsequently gave it to Sir Frederic Leighton, who had, according to Mrs Watts in her manuscript catalogue of her husband's works, 'admired' it. Leighton and Watts were not only close friends but neighbours in the artists' colony which had developed in the Holland Park area since the 1860s. When the picture appeared at Leighton's posthumous sale at Christie's in July 1896 it was bought by the dealer Sir William Agnew, who apparently wanted it for his own collection rather than stock. He still had it nine years later, when he lent it to the first two venues of the memorial exhibition which toured the country following Watts's death in 1904. Condition Report: The canvas has been lined with a new stretcher, but this is providing good supports and the paint layer is stable, and the old exhibition labels have been preserved. There is a diagonal surface scratch (approx. 4cm) to the upper right corner, and a very small spot of paint loss above it. Inspection under UV light reveals no visible signs of retouching, although the glaze layers and discoloured varnish do make it difficult to read under UV.Condition Report Disclaimer

John Locke. Epistola de tolerantia ad Clarissimum Virum T.A.R.P.T.O.L.A. Scripta à P.A.P.I.O.L.A. Gouda, apud Justum ab Hoeve, 1689. 12°. 96 S. Pp. d. 19. Jh. Dr., 1669. 12°. 46 S. - Sehr selten. Laut KVK nur in 1 Bibliothek. Rare first edition of Locke's influential work, a plea for religious toleration, in which he expresses his belief that church and state serve different functions and should therefore be located in separate institutions. - Harrison & Laslett 2941 - PMM p. 308 - Locke's first separately published work, published anonymously. Louis XIV had revoked the Edict of Nantes in October, removing the last vestiges of toleration for French Protestants. The Epistola de tolerantia was written after Locke's return from Cleves around the beginning of November. The "Limburgius" to whom De tolerantia is addressed is Philippus van Limburgch (1633-1712), the well-known Dutch thinker and correspondent of Locke, who was responsible for the publication of this treatise. The manuscript was sent to the printer after Locke returned to England from exile in February 1689 (in the wake of William III). It was published in early May of the same year, more than three years after it was actually written and only a few months before the publication of an English translation by William Popple. - Bound with 3 titles: 1. J.A. Thou, Nec non aliorum ex ordine tam ecclesiastico. 1686 - 2. anonymous: F.M.M. Otium hyemale vespertinum de comparanda fidei. 1706 - 3. anonymous: Nonnemo a nonnemine in causa Syncretismi. 1669 - All 3 titles very rare, only in a few libraries worldwide.

After an unhappy marriage to John Foster, an Irish politician, Lady Elizabeth Foster was befriended by Georgiana Spencer The duchess supported her financially and even provided her with a home at Devonshire House, thus creating one of the most celebrated ménage-a-trois of the period. Lady Foster became the Duke's mistress and bore two children by him, but throughout all this Elizabeth and Georgiana remained the closest friends. Georgiana died in 1806 whereupon, after a respectable interval of three years, Elizabeth became the new duchess of Devonshire. Elizabeth died in 1824, and we may perhaps see the production of the lithographed edition of the "Passage du Mont Saint-Gothard" as one of the final manifestations of their remarkable friendship." Vicktorine Hofer. Arbeitsbuch (Deckeltitel). Reich illustriertes Stickerei-Manuskript mit 45 teils kolorierten Original-Zeichnungen. Österreich, um 1880. Gr.-8°. Blindgepr. Lwd. d. Sehr gut erhalten. Richly illustrated embroidery manuscript with 45 partly coloured original drawings. Austria, c. 1880. Blind-tooled cont. cloth with gilt cover title, glossy endpapers (somewhat rubbed, minimally spotted). - Splendid manuscript workbook on embroidery, lace making and knitting from the Gründerzeit, with elaborate, partly coloured drawings of highest precision. It gives a detailed insight into the techniques and materials, the aesthetics and the media of handicraft embroidery and its dissemination in the second half of the 19th century. In the Biedermeier period, needlework as a leisure activity was no longer a privilege of aristocratic women, but also gained in importance in bourgeois circles. This resulted in numerous elaborately worked examples, often with floral or geometric motifs, as well as elaborately drawn manuscript workbooks such as the one presented here. In addition to simple techniques (Holbein technique, Viennese cross stitch), more complicated, multi-coloured motifs (Arabic technique, Reticella, Venetian) are explained. The accompanying texts with explanations and legends are written in beautiful cursive. The partly coloured pencil and ink drawings bear annotations such as "very good", "excellent" or "superb", written in beautiful calligraphic script by a second hand with different coloured ink, probably by a teacher. - Paper a little bit brownish. Very well preserved.

Arabic ms.- Ghazaliyaat Kan'at al-Arabi [Divan of Poetry written in Arabic], illuminated manuscript in Arabic on blue paper speckled with gold, 164 leaves (plus two later endleaves at each end), containing five parts in one volume, single column, predominantly in Arabic with a few verses in Farsi, nine lines in total, comprising two lines of black thuluth outlined in gold at top and bottom, with six lines black naskh separated by a further line of gold thuluth outlined in black, five illuminated polychrome headings opening each new section of poetry, catchwords, leaves ruled in blue and orange, some contemporary annotations to margins in nasta'liq, small scattered early worm-holes, some leaves repaired along outer margins particularly along lower edge of leaves, not affecting text, a few ex-libris stamps, contemporary blind-stamped calf, inlaid leather central medallions and corner-pieces, edges painted with orange and yellow floral decorations, rebacked and outer edges repaired, old worm-holes, 8vo (217 x 112mm.), Safavid Persia (probably Isfahan), [second quarter of 16th century].⁂ A visually stunning Persian codex, and notable that the poetry is in Arabic. There are five different sections in this volume, each being either a divan, mathnavi or ghazal - various poetic forms typically taken from Persian literature and very rarely seen in the Arabic language. Although no exact comparison has been found, the text bears a striking resemblance to sufi poet Al-Busiri's collection of poems dedicated to Prophet Muhammad entitled Qasa'ida al-Burda. Though scarce, this text was popular among sufis and was adapted by other poets. The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, have an adapted version of the poem here, first compiled in the thirteenth century (their W.581.25B., dated 1366 AD).The style and layout of these leaves is reminiscent of Qur'ans produced in Shirazi workshops in the mid-sixteenth century (cf. those in Christie's, 26 April 2012, lot 46, and 27 April 2017, lot 96). They have the same larger calligraphic panels of text above, below and in the middle of the central naskh sections, in which the script employs alternating colours, usually in blue and gold. The striking difference, however, is in the present manuscript's use of unusual blue paper, and this sets this codex apart from its peers.
Medicine.- Surgery.- Vigo (Giovanni da) Opera. Additur chirurgia..., 3 parts in 1, title in red and black, within woodcut architectural border, woodcut initials, a scattered couple of small manuscript notes in ink, tightly bound, some sidelines slightly disappearing into gutter and touching title border, modern calf with red label to spine, light damp-stain lower cover, joints scuffed, [c.f. Wellcome 6614], small 8vo, [Lyon], [for Jacques Berjon by Antoine Vincent], [1540].⁂ One of the early editions of Vigo's work which includes, a surgical treatise by his student Mariano Santo, who achieved fame from his introduction of the so-called "Marian operation" of lithotomy.
Clandestine atheism.- Freret (Nicolas) Lettre de Thrasybule a Leucipe, Traduite du Grec, manuscript in French on paper, 281pp., 22 lines, ruled in red throughout, some light foxing, contemporary calf, spine gilt, corners, joints and spine ends worn, 8vo, n.p. [France], 1722.⁂ Rare example of a work circulated in manuscript form before the printed edition, which in this case did not appear till 1768. This copy is dated 1722, the time around which the first copies were known to be circulating, either being bought or borrowed for a small sum.Considered as one of the most hostile works to religion, a prelude to atheism, this Letter from Trasibule was also very innovative, introducing the study of history and comparative religions in the critique of dogma. Voltaire noted in his copy "livre dangereux" and the Marquis de Sade literally borrowed half of the Letter in his Histoire de Juliette.
Americas.- Mexican Novenas.- [Sammelband of 22 novenas], most with woodcut frontispiece or illustrations, early signature crossed out on first title, manuscript list of contents on rear pastedown (one not present), lacking free endpapers, contemporary vellum, a little worn, 16mo, Mexico, 1776-1804.⁂ A treasury of small Mexican religious tracts. A novena is a nine day period of private or public prayer to obtain special graces, to implore special favours, or make petitions, derived from the Latin novem, meaning nine. As the definition suggests, the novena has always had more of a sense of urgency and neediness. In a liturgical usage, the novena differs from an octave which has a more festive character, and either precedes or follows an important feast. The novena has been an important part of Christianity in the Caribbean and Latin America, both among the native Indian communities who converted to Christianity under the colonial Spanish or Portuguese rule, as well as the diverse communities that formed anew from millions of slaves and indentured labourers brought to the Americas from different parts of Africa and Asia. The devotional prayers are dedicated to statues of Jesus Christ, Madonna and various saints. They are also a part of velorio (wake) after the death of someone, which includes nine nights of novena (rezos de los nueve días). Two of those offered here appear to be otherwise unrecorded titles, not foundin Medina, OCLC, Palau, or elsewhere: Devocion diaria en honor de los siete singularisimos. [16] pp. Mexico: Joseph de Juaregui, 1794;Novena de el glorioso apostol San Judas Thadeo. [28] pp. Mexico: Joseph Juaregui, 1776 (though this is stated to be a reprint of an earlier novena).A full list of titles is available from the auctioneers upon request.

(3).⁂ Shakespeare and Tolkien connections.Shakespeare Connection. Shakespeare purchased New Place in May 1597 from William Underhill, described as 'a subtle, covetous, and crafty man'. "Two months later Underhill died at Fillongley, near Coventry, after orally bequeathing 'all his lands to his first-born Fulke. In 1599 Fulke, still a minor, was hanged at Warwick for poisoning his father. The law took the forfeit of the of the Underhill estate for felony, but it was regranted to Fulke's younger brother Hercules [knighted in 1617] when he came of age in 1602. In Michaelmas term of that year, Hercules Underhill confirmed the sale of New Place to Shakespeare, who paid the prescribed fee, equal to one quarter of the yearly value of the property, to clear the title." - S. Schoenbaum. William Shakespeare: A Compact Documentary Life, OUP, 1980. Sir Walter Leveson (d. January 1620) of Ashmores near Wolverhampton, a Catholic recusant, as was his sister, Elizabeth; children of Thomas Leveson of Wolverhampton (c. 1533-95), and Joyce Leveson (d. 14 March 1608).Sir Henry Shirley, second baronet (1589-1633), landowner and local politician.Tolkien Connection. Tolkien married Edith Bratt, illegitimate daughter of Frances Bratt of Wolverhampton. Tolkien perhaps knew of the Underhills as an important local family in Wolverhampton and other areas of Birmingham. In the 16th century the Underhills were also known to have lived in Baginton and Idlicote in Warwickshire. Frodo Baggins on leaving Bag End in the Shire uses, at Gandalf's behest, the name of Mr Underhill.

Written by Charles Dickens Exclusively for his own children in 1846, typescript, 63pp., printed on recto only, original red half calf, spine with tan morocco label lettered "The Children's New Testament. Charles Dickens" in gilt, small chip to label affecting text, rubbed, 4to, [c.1911].⁂ The Matz copy of The Children's New Testament, more commonly known as The Life of Our Lord, created long prior to general publication in 1934. At the author's request, publication was delayed until the last of his children had died. A majority vote within the family resulted in publication in 1934. A handful of copies are presumed to have been made prior to publication, but seemingly the only copy aside from this with whereabouts known is that of Mark Lemon, a friend of Dickens and founding editor of Punch Magazine. His copy is now housed in the Dickens House Museum. The origin of this copy, belonging to the Dickens scholar B.W. Matz, is outlined on the second page of typescript: "Transcribed from Mark Lemon's copy.
