The dedicatory poem is headed "J.S. to O.S." and the preface is signed by Nahum Tate, who states that, before endorsing its publication, he showed the manuscript to "several experiencd anglers" who took the view that it excelled " any thing that has been publish'd in prose upon this subject", while from the poetic point of view "the cast and design of the work are after the model of ancient and best receiv'd poets." The second edition was published in 1713.

Crawhall (Joseph) "Sketches &c by Joseph Crawhall. Warkworth 1889", a commonplace book of drawings, manuscript notes, photographs and ephemera, the first leaf titled by Crawhall as above, comprising over 85 drawings and watercolours of which c.20 figure studies including 3 self-portrait caricatures, the remainder small heraldic subjects, two of the Crawhall arms, many of the Percy arms, and antiquarian sketches, many taken in Warkworth Church, 19 family photographs including several of Crawhall, 30 woodcuts, all but 9 hand-coloured including the "four crows" headpiece, a four-line verse headed "To Oscar Wilde on his Marriage" dated 29 Feb.1884 (quoted by Felver p.57 from another album), a list of some prices at the Bewick sale, 1889, a watercolour design for an illustrated Christmas card headed "May good digestion wayte on Appetite", the reverse with comments, initialled, by Andrew Tuer: "This is by far & away the best: it is quaint, humorous & every bit of it tells", a woodcut Christmas card dated 1883 designed for his wife Margaret (a variant of that illustrated by Felver, p.60), a woodcut portrait identified as Jane Emerson (Crawhall's maternal grandmother) inscribed "JC to MC" to his wife, four drawings of dogs by Joseph Crawhall Jr., one in watercolour over pencil, one in pen and charcoal with a little watercolour, two in pen and ink, 50 x 110mm. to 80 x 165mm., all signed JC Jnr., dated 1877 and 1878, a further, unsigned, watercolour of "Towler", a hunting dog, attributed to Joseph Jr. in a later note, newspaper cuttings related to the family and other items, a few loosely inserted, contemporary linen-backed boards, backstrip titled in ink by Crawhall, bookplates of Joseph Crawhall and Oswin Charlton, 4to (190 x 150mm.), 1889. *** The drawings by Joseph Junior are of particular interest since his first exhibited paintings, also of dogs, were shown at the Arts Association of Newcastle in 1878. Van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) 'became one of the most remarkable microscopists of all time ... made remarkable discoveries in the anatomy of man and the higher and lower forms of animal and plant life ... first fully described spermatozoa ... discovered infusoria and rotifera ... ' (PMM). He communicated his observations in letters mostly to the Royal Society in London, which he published in 2 series, numbered 28-146 and I-XLVI, issued in 18 works. In the present set, only letter 65 is not present as the first edition, published on its own in 1688 (Dobell 11), but as part of the first publication of letters 61-67 in 1689 (Dobell 12). This set also contains early manuscript copies of two supplementary items: Brief van G. Bidloo aan Antony van Leeuwenhoek, Delft, 1698, (Dobell p. 400, 'The Dutch edition is extremely rare') and Register Verstrekkende te gelijk voor een Korte Inhouid van alle de Werken vande Heer Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Leiden, 1695, 2 parts, (Dobell p.399). Clifford Dobell's own set, later in the Honeyman Collection (sold at Sotheby's, 12th May 1980, lot 1958) apparently had 100 plates, but this perhaps includes the full-page text engraving.
