A silver Betel Nut Box and Cover, mid 19th century, in the form of a butterfly alighting on a gourd, the sides engraved with endless knots and shou, in three divisions for betel nut, lime and paan leaf, stamped Shu wu, zu wen, xiang, dents, wear, 8.8cm By repute this box was looted from the Summer Palace by Captain Bryan Charles Fairfax of the Durham Light Infantry. With the lot is a manuscript note apparently listing the items, including the box, to be given to Christopher Firth by Fairfax. Col. Bryan Charles Fairfax CMG (1873-1950) Colonel Fairfax, the second son of the late Col. T F Fairfax, was born on 12 September 1873 and was educated at Winchester and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Promoted to Captain in 1900, he went to China with the expeditionary force sent to deal with the Boxer Rebellion and served with the 1st Chinese Infantry Regiment at the relief of Peking and other engagements, receiving the medal with clasp. After a distinguished military career, he retired to his native Yorkshire, where he indulged in his favourite pursuit of hunting and was also known as a horse breeder and trainer of repute. CASTLEREAGH LORD: (1769-1822) British Statesman, as Chief Secretary for Ireland Castlereagh was involved in putting down the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Later, as Foreign Secretary, he was central to the management of the coalition that defeated Napoleon. Castlereagh famously fought a duel with George Canning in 1809. D.S., Castlereagh, one page, oblong 8vo, Whitehall, 5th January 1809. The manuscript document states, in full, 'His Majesty is graciously pleased to refer this Petition to Mr. Attorney or Mr. Solicitor General to consider thereof and report his opinion what may be properly done therein, whereupon His Majesty will declare His further pleasure'. A good, bold ink signature (‘Wellington’) on a slim oblong 8vo piece neatly removed from an official document. The portion of the document bears a countersignature and a stamped signature of King George IV to the left margin. Seven lines of manuscript text appear to the verso referring to annuities in England and Ireland. About VG

GEORGE III: (1738-1820) King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820. A good, early D.S., George R, just two days after becoming King, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at Saville House, 27th October 1760. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing Anthony St. Legor (sic) to be a Major in the 21st Regiment of Dragoons or Royal Forresters commanded by John Manners, Marquess of Granby. Countersigned at the foot by William Pitt (1708-1778) The Elder. 1st Earl of Chatham. British Prime Minister 1766-68, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1756-57, 1757-61. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light dust staining and a few very small, extremely minor tears at the edges, not affecting the signatures. About VG Anthony St. Leger (c.1731-1786) British Army Officer and Horse Racing Enthusiast. Founder of the St. Leger Stakes horse race. Established in 1776, the St Leger is the oldest of Britain's five Classics. It is the last of the five to be run each year, and its distance is longer than any of the other four. John Manners (1721-1770) Marquess of Granby. English Lieutenant-General. Granby served in the Seven Years' War as overall commander of the British troops on the battlefield and was subsequently rewarded with the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Forces. He was popular with his troops and many public houses are still named after him today.

CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Typed manuscript, unsigned, with holograph corrections, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1934). The page of corrected proof is from Churchill's book Marlborough: His Life and Times and bears five ink corrections in Churchill's hand (the holograph corrections indicated in bold text), in part, '….a general manoeuvring equal or smaller forces in closest contact with a redoubtable enemy, who even often might engage in a decisive battle “at no more than one hour's notice”. After the long marches and twelve or fourteen hours in the saddle, & reconnaissances often under cannon-fire….It is these most interesting simple records that tell his tale, rarely never meant for an eye but those to whom they were addressed, in a most compulsive form, and vindicate alike the greatness, warmth, and virtue of his nature.' With several other more minor corrections in indelible pencil, most likely in the hand of a proof reader. A rare and early item of Duncan Edwards memorabilia: an English Schools' F.A. 'Schools Internationals' certificate for The Victory Shield Competition in May 1952, completed in beautiful manuscript calligraphy, named to D. EDWARDS and certifying that he was selected LEFT HALF FOR ENGLAND v WALES, BIRMINGHAM, 3rd MAY 1952, signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the English Schools F.A., the crests of the four home nations schools' F.A.'s decorate each corner, 20 by 33cm., 8 by 13in. Duncan Edwards is the only England schoolboy international to have played over the course of three years, 1950, 1951 & 1952 at U-15 level His debut for England Boys was v. N. Ireland at Oldham 6 May 1950, at the age of 13. He made four further appearances in 1951 and was captain for the four appearances he made in 1952 including the 5-1 win over Wales at Birmingham City's St Andrews Ground for which the present certificate was issued. His ninth and final match was on 1st September 1952, precisely a calendar month before his 16th birthday.

A RARE PRIZE AGENTS’ LOG AND ACCOUNT BOOK, MINORCA, CIRCA 1798-9, manuscript written in a neat hand on laid paper watermarked for ‘1797’, and kept by Robinson Kittoe but including details with joint agents Sykes, Tucker and Headlam, with listings for thirty-two prizes, detailing where captured, by whom, contents and value, monies paid etc. the latter half with accounts for his co-agents, and seven captains with autograph receipts, contents listing to front, the reverse with a lengthy Army prize agent transaction signed by Major Trant for Minorca, bound with original soft marbled boards -- 12½ x 8¼in. (31.5 x 21cm.), Sir John Duckworth (1748-1817) captured Minorca in October 1798, and took many prizes as a result - the Aurora (28) is mentioned several times in this log, amongst a host of well-known RN vessels such as the Leviathan. This log sheds interesting information on the manner of cargos captured (including one of rags!) and the monies paid and owed with the Agents becoming quasi bankers to the Captains and loaning substantial sums against what they expected to be captured. This lot is liable to 5% Import Tax on the hammer price.
