La Sainte Bible, printer's device on title, text in double column, ruled in red throughout, numerous woodcut illustrations, including the Old Testament series after Hans Holbein, 14ff. of manuscript translation in at Mm6, title browned with paper repairs to edges and slip laid-down to verso, A2&3 mounted on stubs with a few innermost letters lost, Pp1-6 thin paper repairs to edges, Qq1-5 paper repairs with loss of side-notes and some other letters, Qq6 defective with lower half supplied in paper (?no text lost), otherwise occasional very minor spots of stains, nineteenth century morocco over boards, with brass centre-piece and corner-pieces, extremities slightly rubbed, most of brass clasps remaining, g.e., [not in Mortimer French], folio, Lyon, Balthazar Arnoullet, 1550.*** An illustrated edition of the Geneva version of the Bible in French, with Holbein's series of Old Testament illustrations. Notable also for its inclusion of III Maccabees, advertised on the title verso; in this copy a manuscript English translation of the French by one time owner, Mary Le Couteur, has been bound-in. Provenance: the Bailhache or Balhake family [dated eighteenth century ownership inscriptions to title]. Later, the Le Couteur family of Jersey [various and scattered ink ownership inscriptions, including one with small hand-drawn coat of arms]; bought by Mary Le Couteur in 1826 (autograph ink note), and passed to her son, John Le Couteur FRS, Aide de Camp to Queen Victoria.
Astronomy.- Streete (Thomas) Astronomia Carolina, with exact and most easy tables and rules for the calculation of eclipses, third edition, title in red and black, edge silked with 3 other small repairs, stained, woodcut diagrams, occasional manuscript notes in ink, damp-staining and others soiling, endpapers renewed, eighteenth century calf, spine head torn and foot repaired, [Houzeau & Lancaster 9229], 4to, S. Briscoe and R. Smith, 1716*** Third edition of the first printed text in English to discuss Kepler's first and third laws of planetary motion, alongside Streete's own version of Kepler's second law; originally published in 1661, it was a standard textbook, consulted by Newton, Flamsteed, and Halley. The Macclesfield Library copy, with 'South Library' bookplate and usual blind-stamps to initial pages.

It is not possible to tell whether this was done officially or by a member of the public.

Provenance -PROVENANCE: From the collection of Eric Lomax 'The Railway Man' of Berwick.Eric was an avid collector from an early age and passionate about steam trains and technology, collecting books, documents, photos, and ephemera throughout his life. He, and his much-loved wife Patti, featured in the blockbuster film, ‘The Railway Man’, and were played by Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. It tells the true story of Eric, who, whilst serving as British army officer in World War II, was captured and subsequently tortured by the Japanese in a Burma labour camp. After the war, he suffered years of mental turmoil, but was eventually rescued from his torment through the love of Patti.
A late Victorian circa 1870s and onwards handwritten manuscript combination recipe & map book. With elaborate calligraphic title page, dated September 22 1871 and named to A. (Annie) Arnold. Containing approx. twenty-three hand-drawn and hand coloured maps of South America, New Zealand, England, Italy and the United States. To the opposing page of each map are recipes, either pasted in from newspaper clippings or written by hand, including preserving instructions, recipes for Scotch bread, pork pies, buttered eggs, Jubilee pudding etc. Appearing to have been used for recipes until circa 1900s. Bound in half morocco with marbled boards. An interesting example of Victorian manuscript ephemera. 8vo.
A George IV Coronation medal in Gutta Percha, floral border, obverse with laureate bust & inscribed: “George IV, King of Great Britain”, reverse: crown within wreath of rose, thistle, & shamrock; “Born Aug. 12th 1762, Accession To The Throne Jan. 29th 1820, Crowned July 19th 1821”; with pale blue silk ribbon, & accompanying manuscript note: “This Medallion Was Worn by my Beloved Wife at a Ball on the Bowling Green at (?) on the Day of the Coronation of George ye 4th, July 19th 1821 – The First Time I Ever Was Her Partner at Dancing”.
A folder compiled by John Humphreys (1939-2012), sporting and countryside author, relating to a punt gun he built, titled/inscribed by John Humphreys to front cover "Gunning Punt - Built by me in Autumn 1966. Inspired by Colin Willocks' book "The Gun Punt Adventure". John Humphreys.", folder containing two Typed Letters Signed from Colin Willock to John Humphreys, content re designing/building punt gun including suggestions of books with good information for appropriate measurements etc, dated 20th April 1966 and 25th April 1967, both on Anglia Television headed paper, plus approx. 16 pages of manuscript pencil and pen & ink drawings of the punt gun, measurements, lists of some features, cost of materials etc, plus a quantity of invoices for various materials, black & white photograph mounted on cover of folder depicting John Humphreys out on water rowing his punt with his dog; together with a 64 page manuscript memoir by Ernie James of Welney (1906-2005), one of the last (some said the last) of the legendary "Fen Tigers" - the elite breed of men who scratched a seasonal living on the Fens of East Anglia, housed in postally used envelope dated 1990 with inscription by James "All memories are wrote in here. To my friend John Humphreys".From the estate of John Humphreys (1939-2012), distinguished sporting and countryside author who wrote for Shooting Times for more than 40 years – for much of that time contributing the weekly ‘Country Gun’ column. He was a much loved character of the shooting community who dedicated his life to the promotion of shooting, fishing and the countryside.
A fine Georgian commonplace album c.1831, containing many well executed pen, ink and watercolour sketches, pencil & watercolour, pencil drawings, some manuscript prose and extracts etc., some watercolours heightened in gilt, some on rice paper, 35+ well executed drawings/sketches in various media in total, many of which full page, plus several leaves of m/s extracts and prose, watercolour floral decorative title page/ownership inscription leaf "Miss Sarah Wood London 21st December 1831" at front, contemporary full decorative green morocco gilt, lower joint split, all edges gilt (24 x 20cm)
