The sections are titled 'Apothegms', 'Actions and Sayings of the Chinese Emperors', 'A Particular Account of the Tartars Irruption into China', 'The Genealogy of the Great Moguls', 'The Genealogy of [The] Family now Raigning in Persia', 'The Chronology and Succession of the Ottoman Monarchy', and 'Of All Known Hereticks: and Others'. Two leaves bear watermarks similar to Churchill 46 & 133 (1711 & 1713 respectively). Not traced as a printed edition. (1)

Portraits of John and Dorothy Procter. a pair. each half-length seated, he holding a book in an interior; she wearing amethyst jewellery at a window, a sunset beyond. oils on canvas. each 90 x 70cm., together with a group of associated ephemera. Dorothy Procter is the subject of the book entitled Siege Lady by C.P.Hawkes and Marion Smithes, who at the time of the Siege of Oporto, 1832-1834, was stationed there with her husband, a director of the shippers and merchants Knowles, Procter & Bold. The present lot is accompanied by one volume of this book, a loose engraving depicting the siege and a group of manuscript copies of letters sent from Dorothy Procter to her brother at the time of the siege.

Balmerino Sixth Baron [Arthur Elphinstone] (1688-1746). Manuscript copy of the dying speech of the Rt. Honorable Lord Belmerino undated (paper watermarked no date) folio two sides previous folds. Note: Arthur Elphinstone sixth Baron Balmerino was a Jacobite who upon the arrival of Prince Charles in Scotland in 1745 was one of the first to join his standard. His importance was recognised in his appointment as colonel and captain of the second troop of life guards in attendance to the prince. After the battle of Culloden in 1746 Elphinstone was captured and sent to London to be committed to the Tower along with the Earls of Kilmarnock and Cromarty and tried with high treason. In August 1746 he was finally brought to Tower Hill for execution eye-witness accounts say "he came upon the scaffold in his regimentals and tye-wig. His coat was blue turned up with red and brass buttons; his countenance serene his air free and easy; he looked quite unconcerned and like one going to a party of pleasure or some business of little or no importance." After presenting the executioner with a fee of three guineas he proclaimed "O Lord! Reward my friends forgive my foes bless King James and receive my soul!".

Single sheet vellum approx 10.5" wide by 7" high lacking seals written in Latin small hole in right hand sector of text [no loss]; Perthshire land charter Manuscript charter dated 18 March 1464 by Alexander Seres burgess of Perth to John Mirtone Canon of Dunkeld of 20 shilling annualrent from lands in Perth. Single sheet vellum approx 10" wide by 5" high two wax seals of Robert Balre Bailie of Perth and Alexander Seres written in Latin (3). Note: The first of these charters is especially unusual as legal documents issued by women are rare in the Middle Ages especially with an intact seal. This is also a good early example of the legal use of the Scots vernacular language the earliest recorded example dates from 1380AD.

Orem William. Town Clerk of Aberdeen. A description of the chanonry in Aberdeen. MS circa 1750 12mo pp. 180 contemporary full calf front endpaper torn. Note: William Orem historian of Aberdeen completed the above work c.1725. The work has been much quoted by later historians the earliest reference being extracts in Gough’s “British Topographia” (1780). The work remained in manuscript for several year’s after the author’s death and was finally printed by J. Chambers at Aberdeen in 1791 and 1830.

[Anstis John]. The register of the Most Noble Order of the Garter from its cover in black velvet usually called the Black Book with notes placed at the bottom of the pages and an introduction. London: John Barber 1724. First edition 2 volumes folio engraved frontispiece to each volume engraved vignettes as head and tail pieces 13 engraved plates (of which 2 are folding) with the "Editoris appendix" bound at the front of volume 2 contemporary sprinkled calf with some scuff marks and rubbing occasional slight paper discolouration single wormhole in the margin of the prelims. to volume 1 otherwise a very good copy with good margins. (2). Note: Moule 477. "Glover Camden and Dugdale are formidable names yet it may be questioned whether Anstis did not in strictly heraldic learning surpass them all. In perusing his manuscript remains one is constantly astonished at the breadth and depth of his scholarship and his mastery of a vast range of primary sources." (Wagner Heralds of England p. 318. His reputation was established by the present publication though only these two volumes appeared out of a projected eight which he undertook at his own expense of #1000 and of which he only recovered about half. Provenance: Signature of George Edward Stanley on the title-pages.

Saxton (Christopher). Original manuscript estate plan of an area to the west of Wakefield, Yorkshire, dated 1601, drawn in ink on paper, the title contained within an ornate cartouche and reading 'A Plat of Mr Pilkinton his Landes, belonging to the old Haule, & new Haule, in the parish of Wakefield, Made by Christopher Saxton. Ano 1601', with separate compass rose, scale of distance surmounted by dividers and a circular crest depicting the Pilkington seal of a mower with scythe, each field marked with tennants name, some faded original yellow colour marking the boundaries, creased where previously folded and with some areas of loss confined to the borders, lightly spotted and laid onto linen, the sheet measuring 803 x 767 mm An extremely scarce example of an original manuscript estate plan by Christopher Saxton (c.1543-c.1610) who is less well known as a local estate surveyor although it was the profession that dominated his later years. The title cartouche incorporates the initials of Christopher's son Robert who was then aged about sixteen and was probably given the task of drawing up the map although the writing is in Christopher's hand. The scale is sixteen perches to one inch which equates to about 92 meters to an inch. The area mapped is bounded on the north by 'The Waie from Halifax to Wakefield' and from north-east to south by an unnamed watercourse with a road traversing the southern third on the route of the present Horbury Road.

Scarce manuscript volume, from 6th June 1823 to 10th December 1851, containing a record of the meetings of this early night policing force, for the Langbourn Ward of London, recording the meetings of the watch committee, that eighteen watchmen and one constable be sufficient for the nightly duty, names of the appointed watchmen, payments made to the watch, proposals of a list of constables, payments to street keeper for the various patrols in the district, hours of duty of the watchmen, the dismissal of watchmen for neglect of duty and insulting language, gratuities paid for the good conduct of the patrols, the setting up of a watch house and constables room at number 40 Lime Street, London, etc.,262pp., contemp. reversed calf with leather label to upper cover, worn, folio (1)

An account book relating to the William Dowdswell's family seat at Pull Court, Bushley, Worcestershire, 1774-1793, 112pp. of neatly written accounts (approx. 30 entries per page), numerous blank leaves, contemp. reversed calf, slightly worn to extrems., folio William Dowdeswell (1721-1775) politician, Channcellor of the Exchequer. The accounts were commenced shortly before his death under the administration of his wife and continued by her until 1794. The entries are for expenditure and income being kept in running total. The majority of the entries are for running the estate which included rentals received and travel expenses etc. (1)

A series of twelve fine original watercolours illustrating 'The Shipwreck' by William Falconer, c.1820-30, twelve unsigned watercolours, each approx. 125 x 165 mm, mounted on card, with four-line manuscript extract from the poem pasted to leaf preceeding each illustration, a.e.g., yellow chalk-glazed endpapers, contemp. gilt decorated full maroon morocco (by Hering, 9 Newman St.), a few minor spots to margins at front and rear, sl. rubbed to extrems., folio The watercolours appear to be copies or versions of some of the well known published illustrations to Falconer's famous poem, by Nicholas Pocock, Robert Dodd and others. The watercolour style is somewhat similar to the work of Samuel Owen (1768-1857). (1)
