IRELAND. CATHOLIC EMANCIPATION. Volume of "Autographs for Civil and Religious Liberty", containing 296 printed forms signed and completed in manuscript, subscribing sums of money towards defraying the expenses of the meeting in Dublin on 29th January 1829 to promote the cause of civil and religious freedom. Folio, later half green morocco gilt. Tipped on to a blank leaf is the printed description of the volume when it was offered for sale, c.1880, by W. B. Kelly's Old Book Establishment (Dublin). "Important collection of Autographs and Memoranda of Two Hundred and Ninety Six Peers, Baronets, Members of Parliament, and Political Notorieties connected with the great Protestant Meeting for Catholic Emancipation, in the Rotunda, in 1829 . . . These 296 Letters are the replies of the various Noblemen and Gentlemen, with their Addresses, sent by post to the Secretary (of the Committee of the Protestant Declaration), and the amount they subscribed . . .". The autographs include Hamilton Rowan, Michael O'Loghlen, Lords Bangor, Dunraven, Gormanstown, Gosford, Westmeath and others; commoners and landed gentry, including the O'Connells, Ponsonbys, La Touches and others.

LESLIE, ANDREW, 1818-94, shipbuilder of Newcastle upon Tyne. Two manuscript diaries of visits to the continent in 1861 and 1863, and 1883 and 1890. 8vo., orig. cloth. The first volume contains details of business meetings relating to orders for vessels in Seville and Cadiz; with other notes on sightseeing etc. Sold with a volume of newspaper cuttings about Andrew Leslie, who was described in his obituary in the Newcastle Daily Leader on 29th January 1894 as "one of the makers of the Tyne. He was one of the pioneers of iron shipbuilding and of industry on this river . . ."(3). See also lot 1192.

An unusual black painted and lacquered 'Chinoiserie' double sided bookcase, reputedly decorated by James McNiell Whistler, 1880s, the sides with lacquered panels decorated with Chinese figures, the borders painted in gold with insects, fruit, flowers and a dragon, bearing a manuscript paper label inscribed 'These two bookcases which for 30 years were in Swinburne's study at the Pines are of especial interest. They were designed and executed by Whistler at the conclusion of the settlement of the quarrel...over the Peacock Room. Watts Dunton acted as solicitor in the affair and Whistler gave one each of the bookcases to the Housemaster's at the Pines. Both, however, found themselves in the study of the Poet.
