METEOROLOGY/CLIMATOLOGY -- MILANKOVITCH, M. Kanon der Erdbestrahlung und seine Anwendung auf das Eiszeitenproblem. Belgrade, 1941. xx, 633 pp. Fol. Owrps., uncut. (Wrps. a bit dam., back cover fails, some underl./small annot. in pencil in places). NOTE:Milutin Milankovitch (1879-1958), Serbian mathematician, astronomer, climatologist, geophysicist, and civil engineer. He gave two fundamental contributions to global science. The first contribution is the 'Kanon der Erdbestrahlung', which characterizes the climates of all the planets of the Solar system. The second contribution is the explanation of Earth's long-term climate changes caused by changes in the position of the earth in comparison to the sun, now known as Milankovitch cycles. Milankovitch spent two years arranging and writing the 'Kanon'. The manuscript was submitted to print on 2 April 1941 – four days before the attack of Nazi Germany and its allies on the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In the bombing of Belgrade on 6 April 1941, the printing house where his work was being printed was destroyed; however, almost all of the printed sheet paper remained undamaged in the printing warehouse, the pages 545-608 however were as a result printed on paper of a lesser quality. - First edition, scarce.

The result was a manuscript map on a scale of approx. 1:60.000 from which this map was deducted. In the west, the map extends to the city of Groningen, as a result of which it also has significance for the historical cartography of the Netherlands, in particular through a detailed topography of the settlements. She then encloses an autograph fragment of her work 'The Sleeping Beauty' [4pp.]. In another letter dated October 1922 she encloses two manuscript poems 'Aubade' and 'Spring'. In another she discusses modern poetry, saying 'Doesn't the state of modern poetry make you feel muddled? It does have that effect on me. It is so untidy, and so unutterably dusty and gritty. I'm sure I don't know what will happen! What are you to do with a generation which quite honestly thinks "The Shropshire Lad" is poetry!". In another she says "Sacheverell has done marvellous new poems. Personally, and quite from impersonal reasons, I think he is the greatest living English poet". Other shorter letters offer invitations to call and meet up. Also included is a signed cabinet portrait photograph of Sitwell; a copy of Facade, Favil Press 1922, one of 150 privately printed copies, inscribed by Sitwell to Evelyn Wilson, with brick pattern covers, and a book of newspaper clippings of prize poems by Evelyn Wilson writing as Lyn Carruthers.
