Manuscript Scottish poetry, on 17 sheets sent from an unnamed poet to Mr (and occasionally Miss) Cowan, living on the High Street, Haddington, one poem entitled Sabbath Desecration is written on the verso of a summons for Jury duty, dated 1887, and is signed 'Eppie Jamson', although this may be a pseudonym, mostly written on franked wrappers, mostly 30 x 13cm Note: It is unclear who the poet responsible for these poems is, however many of them are written in Scots dialect or reflect Scottish locations. There are also several humorous poems and limericks, such as: A Gospeller preached at Dunbar,/ From the top of a barrel of tar;/ He knocked the top in,/ And sank to the chin,/ And his swearing was heard from afar. It appears that some of the poems may have been printed, looking at pencil notes to this effect on the manuscripts. One poem, written in pencil, also sates 'never printed'. The recipient of the poems, Mr Cowan, is variously referred to as 'stationer' and 'bookseller' by the sender, and may have been editing or approving the poems.

A memorial poem for Mr James J. Bell-Irving is pasted into the book. Bell-Irving was a Scottish businessman and was a and member of the Executive Council and Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Bell-Irving married Eva Gertrude Piercy in Hong Kong in 1890, and the numerous pieces of material relating to Hong Kong in the book also suggest that this was compiled by Eva.

Album Amicorum, 1581-1585 belonging to David Graham, 6th laird of Fintry (1557-1592), 78 manuscript leaves including 6 coats of arms (5 of which are coloured, and 2 are those of the Barons of Stubenberg), many contributors seem to be of Teutonic origin, such as Marcus, Christopher and James Fuggeri, Barons of Kirchberg (1581), with the majority of inscriptions in Latin, and occasionally French or English, other contributors include Charles de Balsa, 1581, with a small, hand-drawn coat-of arms and Wolfgang Comes à Montfort, 1581, among others, later vellum, 8vo sized, a little soiling to leaves throughout, some leaves and coats of arms loose Provenance: David Graham, 6th laird of Fintry. One inscription reads: "Marg. Graham, her book", suggesting that the book may have occasionally been used by later generations (Margaret Mackintosh, née Graham, was a granddaughter of David Graham); thence by direct descent within the Graham family. Note: Literally a 'book of friends', the album amicorum was created by young travellers to record meetings with acquaintances. They often include heraldic shields, mottoes and inspirational quotations, written for the owner. David Graham, 6th laird of Fintry, is notable for his role in the affair of the Spanish blanks. As a Roman Catholic, Graham formed part of a group of people who hoped to re-establish Catholicism in Scotland with the help of foreign armies. In 1576, he was only permitted to travel outside the country if David Lindsay and Thomas Fothringham of Powrie, "stood surety that he would do "nothing prejudicial in the realm during his absence" and "would not return without express licence."" However, during his travels, he consorted with supporters of Mary Queen of Scots, including the Archbishop of St Andrews, James Bethune, and finally returned to Scotland in 1583. William Bowes, English ambassador to Scotland, named Graham "the obstinate Papist young Fintrie..." [Mudie & Walker. Mains Castle & the Grahams of Fintry, 1964] This Album Amicorum dates from the period of 1581, whilst Graham was on the continent, until around 1585, and the coats of arms and mottoes of foreign noblemen attest to David Graham's travels and the connections he formed. One page bears the slogan Initium Sapientiaw Timor Domini and states that the entry was written in Paris. Another inscription is signed Ingolstadt. As the 1580s progressed, plans were formed for the King of Spain to invade England and Scotland, with the aim of re-establishing the Catholic faith. Mundie & Walker write: "After the defeat of the Spanish Armada in the summer of 1588, a fresh plan was devised for a Spanish landing in Scotland...The leader of this conspiracy...was Huntly, and Graham of Fintry was one of the Spaniards' principal contacts in Scotland." For his part in the plot, Graham was banished to the continent, however he did not obey this order and continued his rebellion. This led to Graham's family seat, Mains Castle, being taken by the Constable of Dundee in 1589. Graham recovered the castle in 1590, but continued to conspire against the king, producing anti-Protestant propaganda, leading to the loss of his "movable property" and "all of the income" from his estates in 1591. Although the king gave Graham the opportunity to leave Scotland at this point, Graham declined. Graham's downfall came in 1592, with the arrest of a George Ker, who was trying to leave the country. He was discovered with several incriminating letters addressed to the Duke of Parma and "eight papers, blank, except for the phrase "De vostre majestie tres humble et tres obesant serviteur and a signature..." An inquisition, accompanied by torture, showed that the blanks were to be filled up...to the effect that their signitories "should raise a power of horsemen and meet the Spanish armies at their landing...and convey them to England by all the forces they could procure upon the King of Spain's charges."" [Mudie & Walker, 1964] One of the signatories, David Foster, was an alias of David Graham. Graham was arrested, tried and beheaded at the Mercat Cross in Edinburgh on 15th February 1593.

Freud, Sigmund Typed letter signed ("Prof. Freud"), in German, to the Germanist Pieter Smink ("Sehr geehrter Herr"), about his work "massenpsychologie und ich-analyse", discussing a proposed Dutch translation, asking him to write to his publisher for the conditions, requesting that he inform him of the name of the intended translator, as he cannot authorise a translation by somebody he does not know, and suggesting, finally, that he approach Dr J. van Emden in the Hague, who can either supply a translator or report on the one chosen by him: ...Der Autorisation wegen wollen Sie mir den Namen des Uebersetzers nennen, dem Sie die Aufgabe übertragen XXXXXX werden. Einer mir ganz unbekannten Person kann ich keine Autorisation geben..., 1 page, 8vo (223 x 150mm.), later manuscript annotation in pencil, Vienna, 27 August 1924, split along horizontal fold, creasing, a few tiny tears to lower edge, browning, two small stains Note: Freud's work on group psychology and the analysis of the ego, Massenpsychologie und Ich-Analyse, was first published in Zurich in 1921. Partly motivated by observations made during the First World War, it underlines "the leader of the group's central role and demonstrates that group cohesiveness derives from the fact that the members share a common ego-ideal or superego". The typing errors in the letter suggest that it was Freud himself who typed it.

The ESTC does not mention this variation, and it is not mentioned in Darlow & Moule [874]. The fore-edge inscription suggests that this Bible belonged to a woman, perhaps as a wedding gift to a new bride.

Occultism - Pace, Charles Matthew - 'Hamar'at' The Sethanic Cult of the Mask's "The Necrominon" by Hamar'at, The Hermetic Book of the Shades, 4to, illustrated typescript/photocopy, 63pp., including a few illustrations hand-drawn, hand-coloured or embellished in pen, contained in black hand-made covers illustrated in gold pen; [Idem] "The Tarot of the I Ching", 4to, typescript, 16pp., with numerous hand-drawn, coloured and laid-in illustrations and a couple of loose elements including a small patch of monochrome woolen embroidery laid into a sheet of brown paper with handwritten German text, bound in yellow card covers, title page with stamp of the Ho[?] Library and an erased address; [Idem] Another copy, with all illustrations drawn and uncoloured, 4to, bound in yellow card covers (3) Note: Although accounts vary, Charles Matthew Pace seems to have been born in Campbeltown in around 1920, and grew up in Glasgow. Gavin Baddeley writes that Pace, "...made no bones about associating with the infernal..." calling him, "...a mysterious figure boasting the title 'the Jackal of Egypt'..." However, it seems that any media reports regarding Pace's Occult activities in the 1960s tended to be overblown, as Baddeley writes he was, "...never as black as the media liked to paint him." Michael W. Ford writes extensively about Pace in his book Necrominion - Egyptian Sethanic Magick: as a teenager, he developed an interest in Egyptology: particularly mythology and religion. Around this time, Aleister Crowley, the English Occultist, was utilizing, "...a good amount of Egyptian symbolism in his writings and rituals..." As an adult, Ford writes, Pace identified as a "...Satanist, Luciferian and probably more accurately a "Sethanist"..." - the term "Sethanic" can be found on the initial page of the types "Necrominon". However, in the work, Pace writes that he "prefers to be called a Luciferian." The three books included in this lot would seem to be copies of Pace's works, quite possibly created by Pace. A manuscript copy of the "Necrominion" is referred to by Ford as a "...handwritten fully illustrated grimoire...", and Pace did present his teachings at Wiccan meetings in the 1970s. It has been said that Pace was a talented artist, who produced magical books (such as these), and some sources claim that Led Zeppelin guitarist, Jimmy Page, commissioned Pace to paint murals in the home on Loch Ness, which Page purchased from Aleister Crowley.

*Attributed to Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827). Cheltenham..., or the Waters drunken in motion, a wind in the rear, circa 1805, pen and ink drawing with title in manuscript black ink with three manuscript captions in brown ink, laid on later card, 265 x 355 mm A typically bawdy Georgian cartoon lampooning the flatulence inducing qualities of the mineral waters available at Cheltenham Spa. The drawing is unsigned and although the style of drawing is reminiscent and there are caricatures of Cheltenham by Rowlandson, it has not been possible to authenticate the image with any authority. The image shows signs of earlier mounting and framing, and the old backboard of the frame survives with a Fores Ltd gallery label on its verso. Also on the verso of the board is a 20th century manuscript inscription stating that the paper is 'J.Whatman 1804'. This is impossible to authenticate because the drawing is stuck by its margins to later straw board. The retained backboard also attributes the cartoon to James Gillray but there is no evidence to support this. (1)
