[WILDE OSCAR]: (1854-1900) Irish poet and playwright. WILDE DOROTHY (1895-1941) English socialite, the niece of Oscar Wilde. Dolly Wilde, a lesbian, alcoholic and heroin addict, had a reputation as a charming and witty conversationalist and this, along with her famous family connections, made her a popular guest at salons in Paris. A rare autograph poem signed, with her initials D.W., one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., in bold pencil. The manuscript poem celebrates the American writer Edgar Allan Poe and commences ´O Poe! O magic two syllables/ Beginning of the word most divine/ Poetry! Such a name as was thine/ Was written on dismal twelve tables´ and concludes with the lines ´Nothing else but ashes hear below/ But, above, a winged great shadow/ Which covers thy starry native land/ "Encomium!" says thine owns high clamour/ And Europe, from afar, says: "Honour"!´. LOUIS XIV: (1638-1715) Also known as Louis the Great or The Sun King. King of France 1643-1715. Son of Louis XIII. His reign of more than 72 years is the longest recorded of any monarch in European history. An extremely rare Autograph Letter Signed, `Louis´, two pages, 8vo, n.p. [Versailles], `A 10 heures´ ("At 10h"), in French. The King has received a courier from Spain he was waiting for and is in hurry to check what has arrived. The full manuscript letter, boldly written in the King´s hand, in his childish way, with corrections, states in full `Il est arrivé d´Espagne un courier que nous cherchont. J´ay pris tous nos paquets et je les ay ouvers, je n´ay fait que les parcourir, il me paraist qu´il n´y a rien de si considerable que je croiais, personne n´a vu nos lettres que moi même, et ce soir je veux me rendre compte de ce qui sera le plus considérable que je n´ay pu voir si precipitament´ (Translation: "A courier arrived from Spain that we were looking for. I took all our packages and opened them, I only looked through them, it seemed to me that there was nothing as important as I thought, no one saw our letters except myself , and this evening I want to realize what will be the most considerable that I was not able to see so hastily") With blank integral leaf. STRINDBERG AUGUST: (1849-1912) Swedish playwright, novelist & poet. A.L.S., August Strindberg, one page, 8vo, n.p., 22nd March 1902, to Emil Schering, in Swedish. Strinderg asks his correspondent if he knows a particular gentleman and also enquires as to whether a translation of a manuscript has been completed. Some very light, minimal age wear and some very minor traces of former mounting to the right edge of the verso, VGEmil Schering (1873-1951) German writer, translator, publisher and editor.
LOWE HUDSON: (1769-1844) Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator who served as Governor of Saint Helena 1816-21 where he was the 'gaoler' of Emperor Napoleon. D.S., H: Lowe, M: General, two pages, folio, Marseille, 14th July 1815. The manuscript document represents a set of accounts, being the ´Return of 200 days Bat, Baggage & Forage money for the Royal Marine Battalion attached to the force under the command of Major General Sir Hudson Lowe from the 13th February to 31st August 1815´, listing the various relevant amounts of each allowance for one Major, three Captains, six Subalterns, one Adjutant, one Quarter-Master, one Assistant Surgeon and two absent Captains, all of whom are listed by name to the second page, totalling 311.5.0 Pounds Sterling. Signed by Lowe at the foot with an autograph minute indicating his approval of the document, and countersigned by Major Charles Pratt. Some light age wear and a few small tears to the edges, and with a thin strip of staining to the edge of the second page, evidently caused by previous mounting. About VGLowe served as Quartermaster-General of the army in the Netherlands from 1814-15 and was about to take part in the Belgian campaign when he was offered the command of the British troops at Genoa; however while still in the south of France he received (on 1st August 1815, shortly after signing the present document) news of his appointment to the position of custodian of Napoleon, Emperor of the French, who had surrendered to HMS Bellerophon, off Rochefort.

Yorkshire Farming.- Wage Books relating to labour at Laxton and Saltmarshe farms [East Riding], 3 vol., printed volumes with manuscript insertions, together c. 320pp. excluding blanks, original straight-grained morocco-backed boards, printed labels "Taylor's Improved Farmer's Account Book" on each covers, folio, 1857-60. *** Details given include workmen's names (also female labour) rates of pay and amounts earned, types of job, deductions for living in, extra for attending cattle on Sundays etc. Men average 2/3 per day increasing to 4/- during threshing (less 7/6 per week for board); women about 10d per day, increasing to 1/- during potato picking.
Indenture of a future Lord Mayor of London.- Apprentice Indenture of Frederick Bull to Richard Cooper, a salter, for a term of seven years, printed document with manuscript insertions, printed arms of Salters' Company to head, stamps to margin and verso, signed by Frederick Bull and witnessed by Richard Lechmere a Master Salter of London, light soiling, corners repaired, 150 x 180mm., 17th December 1729.*** From these very humble beginnings, Frederick Bull would go on to have an extraordinarily successful public and political career. He became the Sheriff of London, an Alderman, the Lord Mayor of London and a member of the House of Commons for the City of London. He also became the first president of the Royal Humane Society.

Westminster Abbey.- Ireland (John, 1761-1842, Dean of Westminster Abbey) Indenture signed between the Very Reverend John Ireland the Dean of Westminster and Dr John Soper, manuscript in English on vellum, 7th September, 1836; and a conveyance signed and sealed between the Very Reverend John Ireland the Dean of Westminster and Edwarde Tucker, v.s. (2)*** Ireland was installed as Dean of Westminster Abbey in February 1816. In addition, he was Dean of the Order of the Bath and rector of Islip, Oxfordshire. As Dean, he had the right of carrying the crown at the coronation service; he did so in 1821 for George IV and in 1831 for William IV. He was too ill for this role in 1838, when Victoria was crowned, and his place was taken by the subdean. Ireland remained Dean of Westminster until his death in 1842.

Great Fire of London.- A True and Faithfull account of The Severall Informations Exhibited to the honourable Committee appointed by the parliament to inquire into the late Dreadful burning of the City of London..., manuscript, title and 61pp., pamphlet text ends on verso of upper wrapper, a few small holes, browned extensively in places, original wrappers, stitched as issued, edges chipped, 200 x 160mm., 1667; and another, an incomplete copy of the printed pamphlet of the same title, v.s. (2). *** Probably copied as an exercise by a juvenile of a printed pamphlet.
Ephemera.- Finsbury Chapel.- Certificate of one share of Ten Pounds owned by Samuel Leach Junior in Finsbury Chapel, Finsbury Circus, printed certificate with manuscript insertions, folds, slightly browned, 130 x 235mm., 25th December 1826; and a small quantity of ephemera, pamphlets etc., including a printed plan of the Uplands Estate, Fareham, with manuscript notes, 480 x 610mm., 1925 & 5 duplicates of the same, v.s., v.d. (sm. qty).
Norfolk Lighthouse.- Mr Gores Patent for the Lighthouses [at Winterton Ness] for 50 years, [docket title], manuscript, 10½pp., folds, browned, a few edges chipped, 370 x 300mm., dated 1637 but later [18th century]; and 2 others, including an 1803 indenture, Phillipps MSS 17194, v.s., v.d. (3).
Military.- Alexander (Sir James Edward, army officer, 1803-85) Skirmish in Persia, manuscript, 8pp., n.d., [19th century]; and a small quantity of others, letters from military officers, including: Lieutenant Henry Dugdale from Galway, Captain John Cosnan, Proby, naval officer in Gibraltar etc., v.s., v.d. (sm. qty). *** First mentioned: "[Alexander] As aide-de-camp to Colonel Kinneir, British envoy to Persia, he was present with the Persian army during the war of 1826 with Russia, and received the Persian order of the Lion and Sun (second class). On 26 October 1827 he was gazetted to the 16th lancers. He went to the Balkans during the Russo-Turkish War of 1829, and received the Turkish order of the Crescent (second class)." - Oxford DNB.

City of London, Gutter Lane.- Order signed by Martha Fletcher to Mr Bryan Stevens Mr Vere & Mr Uriah Webb advising them she has sold her messuage in Gutter Lane and that they must pay arrears of rent to the new owner Mr Sherbrook, manuscript, 156 x 182mm., 31st January 1688; and a quantity of other documents, mostly receipts from the Earl of Guildford to Lady Kaye, c. 1740s - 60s, v.s., v.d. (sm. qty).
18 century gardener & naturalist.- [Journal of gardening and natural history observations], manuscript, 72pp. excluding blanks, ruled in red throughout, slightly browned, letter from Chr Cookson regarding subscriptions to a savings club loosely inserted, original calf-backed boards, rubbed and marked, spine worn with small loss, sm. 4to (205 x 165mm.), 1755 & 1787-93. *** "22 May. 1788. 10 o'clock - worcest now & then, Aberley Hills clear"; "January 30 1792. Skylarks sing. Willow in hedge... a few male nut catkins open'd in sheltered places "; 20 April "cuckoo heard at Mr Rogers... straw coloured & white butterflies appear.". A collection of observations on science, garden plants and natural history. The journal records visibility (seeing the Abberley Hills), plants (planting, varieties of , flowering etc) and natural history (swallows and martins nesting etc) with general nature notes in the manner of Gilbert White. The earliest and smallest section (2pp.) is titled: "Leafing of trees & shrubs in Norfolk 1755" & "The order of flowring of Bulbous plants in borders... ." The main manuscript, without titles, appears to have been written in Worcestershire, probably between the Abberley Hiills and Droitwich Spa.
Pope (Alexander) Copy letter and dedicatory poem to Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford & Earl of Mortimer, concerning publishing the late Thomas Parnell, manuscript, 3pp., 21st October, 1721 [but c.1721]; together with a copy of Harley's 1p. reply of 6th November, 1721, 4to, no place, "Poor Parnell before he dyed, left me the charge of publishing these few Remains of his: I have a strong desire to make them, their author, and their publisher more considerable by addressing & dedicating 'em all to you.", folds, some spotting and light soiling, lightly browned, stitched with a light blue ribbon. *** Thomas Parnell (1679-1718), Anglo-Irish poet and clergyman, and friend of Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. Pope edited and had published 'Poems on several occasions. Written by Dr. Thomas Parnell.'.

England & Wales.- Miniature almanac.- Common Notes..., engraved title and text, 18pp., manuscript 16pp., original wrappers, corners and edges creased, lacks paper on spine, silk tie, housed in a morocco and gilt slip-case for another work, 51 x 30mm., 1732. *** The manuscript notes are written by a person living in Chester who travels across Shropshire and Wales, "Oct 18th Mrs Pugh [Elizabeth Salesbury married Rowland Pugh] of Rug [Rhug] & Miss Pughs & 9 breakfasted at Mr Griffiths Curate." Other places visited include Oswestry, Llangollen, Llangedwyn, Penybont etc.

Howell (James) Dendrologia [graece]. Dodona's Grove, or, the Vocall Forrest, first edition, engraved frontispiece, title with large engraved vignette of gardeners and typographical border, 2 engraved plates, all by M. Walt Whitman: 'Complete Poems & Prose of Walt Whitman 1855. 1888. Authenticated & Personal Book (handled by W.W.). Portraits from Life. Autograph', [Philadelphia, for the author, 1888], number 548 of 600 copies printed for the author's personal use signed by Whitman ("Walt Whitman") beneath text on the printed title page of Leaves of Grass, and with the limitation statement added in manuscript by Horace Traubel, Whitman's literary executor and biographer "Edition: six hundred Number five hundred forty-eight", Photographic title-page with oval profile portrait (Linton engraving after G.C. Potter photograph), tissue guarded engraved portrait of Whitman as a young man (used as frontispiece in the 1855 Leaves) bound in at p.28, from the Maynard and Outram Smith Library, with unobtrusive circular inkstamp to FFEP and reference number at foot of spine, and J. Outram Smith signature on front pastedown. Rev. Herbert Maynard Smith (1869-1949) was a member of the Anglican clergy and a published author on theological and historical subjects as well as the writer of a series of detective novels. Rev. J. Outram Smith (1871-1954) followed his older brother into the clergy and maintained a special interest in missionary work. Original polished buckram gilt, top edge gilt. The definitive edition of Whitman's work issued in his lifetime, published just three years before his death.
