Manuscript Royal Pardon, 6th September 1822, pardoning certain convicts from the death penalty, John Bowker, for highway robbery, Thomas Kirk, for stealing a cow, William Culshaw, for horse stealing, Mary McLean, alias Mary Bannon, for using a forged bank note, Samuel Lancaster the Younger, and Henry Lancaster, for burglary, on condition that they each serve one year’s hard labour in the House of Correction at Preston, signed by the King at head, counter-signed by Robert Peel, 3 pp., minor soiling and sl. ink staining to first page, folio. A large manuscript vellum document being an Exemplification of a judgement given at the Parliament of Dole, and dated 11th May 1401, between Guillaume Bouton, esquier, son of Jehan Bouton deceased and his wife Jehanette, niece of the late Simonette, daughter of the late Guy de Budre de Champaigne, Knigh, v. Kathelin de la Tournelle, esquier, concerning the rent or tithe of grain commonly called the tithe of Bronay in the Franche-comte of Burgundy, which the defendant has occupied and taken for the last nineteen years, with judgement being granted to the plaintiff, and damages of 190 francs, exemplified by Philip the Bold (1342-1404) Duke of Burgundy, joint regent of France with his brother the Duc de Berry. A manuscript vellum document dated 8th January 1471, nomination of Regnault Chevreuse, living in Auxerre, to the office of measurer of grain for the town of Auxerre, Germain Troune, licenciate in laws of Auxerre, recites his acquisition of the nomination of the moiety of the sworn measurers of corn and grains sold in the town of Auxerre from Guillaume de Langueau, esquire, seigneur of Comelle; paying the accustomed dues to the King and to the Duke of Burgundy, Count of Auxerre. A manuscript vellum document dated 1st May 1484, for the Registration of a marriage contract before Jehan Dasquet, lieutenant of the Bailiff Jehan Leschoppier in his seigneury of Dasquet, in the presence of Jehan Flahaut and Jehan le Vasser, men of “the said Jehan” appeared Ynain de Tornes and acknowledged the covenants made to his son Jehan de Tornes called Notin, in advancement of his marriage; describes parcels of land, with their abuttals. An attractive manuscript vellum document, from Juan Gonzales dated Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th February 1370 (Spanish era 1408), being an exchange between the master and brothers of the Royal Hospital and Master Haly and his wife Maria of houses at Cantarranas, with the licence of Lady Estafania de Fuente Almoxir, abbess, for the power, cure and crops which she had in the Royal Hospital to confirm Royal privileges for the holy apostolic fathers of Rome. WREN CHRISTOPHER: (1632-1723) English Architect. D.S., Chr. Wren, one page, small folio, n.p. (London?), 24th October 1693. The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is a bill of payment for the sum of £50, being six months interest on monies advanced by `An Act for Granting to Their Majesties, a Subsidy of Tonnage and Poundage, and other Sums of Money payable upon Merchandizes Exported and Imported`. Boldly signed by Wren in the right margin. Rare. Some light age wear and minor staining to the horizontal central fold, not affecting Wren`s signature. An attractive signed document. About VG The document most probably relates to the expenditure on Wren`s work on the façade of Hampton Court Palace, 1689-94.

KRAY REG: (1933-2000) British Leader of Organised Crime. Small collection of four A.Ls.S., Reg and Dad (3), eight pages (total), 4to, Gartree Prison, Leicestershire and n.p. (Sussex), 10th March-16th October n.y. (1989/1990), to Brad Lane Kray, Reg`s `adopted` son. Kray writes a series of social letters to his son, in one commenting on having seen the Flyweight Championship (`they were both bad for supposed to be world class fighters. I`ve seen better fighters`), and also referring to his life in prison (`I`m not happy today because I have to spend a rotten weekend in this dump. No one knows when I am leaving for Lewes. I find it a ridiculous situation which should only occur in prison films such as Porridge. But its a fact. 21 years and they still mess me about`.), radio interviews, having his haircut and a book a friend of his is writing about Doris Stokes. Three of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes. Also including a typed letter, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., 4th October n.y., to Mark, announcing his intention to write a book entitled Success and asking if he would be interested in publishing the book if the complete manuscript meets his approval. FRANKLIN JOHN: (1786-1847) British Royal Navy officer and Arctic Explorer. Fine D.S., John Franklin, (a good, bold ink signature), one page, large oblong folio (vellum), Hobart Town, Tasmania, 23rd May 1838. The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is a land grant presenting Joseph Archer with five hundred acres of land in the County of Westmorland on the island of Van Diemen`s Land (Tasmania), providing details of the boundaries of the land. Signed by Franklin at the foot. With affixed blind embossed paper seal. VG Franklin served as the 5th Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemen`s Land from 1837-43.

VANE HENRY: (1613-1662) The Younger. English Statesman during the English Civil War. Vane was tried for High Treason and executed on Tower Hill. D.S., H. Vane, one page, folio, n.p., 19th January 1643. The manuscript document was issued following an ordnance by Parliament ‘for the raysing of money for the better enabling of our Brethren of Scotland for our assistance & defence in this Common cause of our religion & Liberty…it is….ordained that the Committee of Parliament & Citty of London appointed for this service, shall have power to name in each County three or more persons of rank & integrity’ and nominating the Mayor and Sheriffs of Norwich, the Mayor of Lynn, the Bailiffs of Yarmouth ‘to put the said Ordnance in execution in the County of Norfolke’. The attractive and boldly penned manuscript document is addressed to Robert, Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer and is a warrant ordering the payment of any sum not exceeding £100,000 to Thomas Moore, Receiver and Paymaster of `Our Land Forces which are or shall be in the Island of Minorca and in the Guarisons of Dunkirke and Gibraltar and such other of Our Land Forces still remaining in the Low Countrys or elsewhere as are or have been under the care of James Brydges Esq….` Countersigned at the foot by Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and 1st Earl Mortimer (1661-1724) British Statesman, First Lord of the Treasury 1711-14. GEORGE IV: (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. A fine autograph manuscript signed, George P, seventy pages (rectos only), 8vo, n.p., 1777-78. The bound manuscript is entitled Translations from Terence and features attractively penned pages in the hand of the Prince, being his translations from Latin into English from three plays of the Roman playwright Terence, Adelphi, Andrea and Heautontimorumenos. Each of the pages have a red ruled border. Signed to a preliminary blank and annotated beneath in the Prince’s hand ‘Volume 4th, begun Octr: 31st 1777-finished May 23rd 1778’ Bound in morocco with marbled endpapers and gilt lettering to spine. With brief printed description laid down to another preliminary blank and bearing the bookplate of George W. Stevens, c.1932. to the pastedown. A rare and attractive volume with an interesting association. Some very light age wear, about VG Previously the property of another English King, Edward VIII. This volume was originally sold by Sotheby`s at their auction of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor`s property, 1997 (Lot 401).

Fine, historic D.S., George P R, (a fine bold signature), as Prince Regent, at the head, seventeen pages, folio, Carlton House, 24th January 1815. The manuscript document is a warrant for affixing the Great Seal to the Ratification of a Secret Convention between King George III and the Emperor of Austria, with a copy of the instrument (in English and French) attached, comprising fourteen clauses largely concerning the military aid that each party will provide if attacked. The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, was issued by the Royal Humane Society and states that, at a meeting of the committee, it was unanimously agreed that George Briggs `is justly entitled to the Honorary Testimonial of this Society....for having on the 25th July 1908 gone to the rescue of a child who was in imminent danger of drowning in the canal at Worcester and whose life he gallantly saved.` Signed by the Prince in his capacity as President of the society. The manuscript text and signatures are very slightly faded, although completely legible. Neatly mounted. The manuscript, written by Edward in bold pencil on a series of different sheets of paper (and possibly incomplete), comprises the Prince`s notes for a speech he delivered on becoming an Honourable Bencher of The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple. He gives thanks for the honour of becoming a member, thanks the Master Treasurer for his generous words and also states, in part, `But I cannot sit down till I have made reference to the members of the Middle Temple who have fought in this great war. Those gallant men who left all their incomes, their careers….& serve overseas in every theatre of war…There are many of them here tonight. I feel I have met several on active service. The manuscript treasury document authorises a payment of £172 be made to Thomas, Lord Trevor, President of His Majesties Privy Council, being part of his allowance. Signed by Walpole in the right margin and countersigned by three individuals including George Oxenden and William Clayton. With a brief manuscript receipt of the payment to the verso, 23rd July 1730, signed by Lord Trevor`s wife and two of his sons (Lord Trevor had died on 19th June) as well as three other individuals. Slight traces of former mounting to the verso and a small, neat tear to a fold, only very slightly affecting Walpole`s signature, has been neatly repaired to the verso. About VG Thomas Trevor, 1st Baron Trevor (1658-1730) British Politician, Attorney General 1695-1701 and Lord Privy Seal 1726-30. Trevor served as Lord President of the Council in Walpole`s cabinet.

The manuscript document is a warrant addressed to the Duke of Montague, Master of His Majesty`s Great Wardrobe, signed by Charles FitzRoy, 2nd Duke of Grafton (1683-1757, Lord Chamberlain 1724-57, father of the 3rd Duke of Grafton, Prime Minister), 20th April 1737, requesting that new standards be delivered to Lord Hartford, Commander of His Majesty`s Second Troop of Horse Guards. Signed by Walpole at the foot, approving the warrant, and bearing two countersignatures. The manuscript Privy Council document is addressed to George, Earl of Cholmondeley, Lord Lieutenant of the County of Chester, and states that His Majesty`s Service requires `a speedy supply of Able Seamen and Seafaring Men for Compleating the number of those who are wanting to man His Majesty`s Fleet`, urging Cholmondeley to carry out a diligent search within Chester `for all stragling Seamen and to secure all such as may be found fit…..and you are to transmitt to the Office of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty lists of the names of such Seafaring men.` In concluding the document states that there is no doubt of `Your Lordship`s zeal and vigour in the performance of this service`. The manuscript document is in the form of an expense account prepared and signed by William Reed, His Majesty`s Agent and Consul at Tripoly in Barbary, North Africa, 20th July 1742. Reed lists his expenditure, including 150 Spanish Dollars `For half a cut of Scarlet Cloth to the Chiefe Admiral` and the same amount `For Annual expenses made on the Auspicious day of His Majesty`s Accession to the Throne`. The expenses total 1000 Spanish Dollars which Reed states is the equivalent of £250 `Sterling money of England`. Signed and dated by Newcastle at the base, allowing the bill. The manuscript document is addressed to Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, and concerns the appointment of John Ewer, Bishop Elect of Llandaff, allowing him to also retain the `Canonry….of our Free Chapel of St. George in Our Castle of Windsor.` With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light overall age wear and some neat splitting to the folds, just affecting the seal, but not touching the signatures. D.S., George Canning (a fine, bold ink signature), one page, folio, London, 18th April 1827 (just six days after Canning became Prime Minister). The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, in French, is a passport issued to George Ward, an Englishman, travelling to Malta via France and Italy. With an engraved coat of arms at the base alongside Canning`s signature. Some light folds, in remarkably fine condition, not usually encountered with passports. VG. Autographs of Canning as Prime Minister are rare following his short time in office.

RUSSELL LORD JOHN: (1792-1878) British Prime Minister 1846-52, 1865-66. Interesting D.S., J Russell, one page, square folio, Westminster, 9th August 1837. The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is addressed to the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of St. Saviours in [Guildford] Surrey and is a warrant issued by the Justices of the Peace of Middlesex, Surrey, Hertford, Essex and Kent, with the approbation of Lord John Russell, following An Act for improving the Police in and near the Metropolis, requiring that the sum of £1236.13.4 be paid from the money collected for the relief of the poor for the purposes of the Police, the sum being at the rate of four pence in the Pound `on the full and fair annual value of all property rateable for the relief of the Poor`. In concluding the warrant requires the sum to be paid to John Wray, Receiver for the Metropolitan Police District, within forty days. Signed by Russell at the foot and countersigned by Sir Charles Rowan (c.1782-1852) British Ar y officer and Sir Richard Mayne (1796-1868) British Barrister, joint first Commissioners of Police of the Metropolis, head of the London Metropolitan Police. The printed letter, completed in manuscript, states that the Agent for the 2nd Battalion 15th Foot `having been apprized, that the Pay Warrant for the said Corps, from the 1st August 1804 to the 24th December 1804, has been forwarded to your Office, and desired to take the necessary steps for clearing the Accompts accordingly.` Palmerston requests that, when the necessary adjustments have been made, his department is notified. About EX. Palmerston served as Secretary at War from 1809-28.
