Higham (David) and Frank David Higham, Archive of manuscript and printed material related to the Highams, including: a quantity of manuscript drafts, poems, notes and letters; many annotated and corrected typescripts; multiple folders of printed, manuscript and collected ephemera; press clippings; musical scores; c.50 books bound books by or collected by the Highhams etc., some with a few tears, creased or slight soiled, v.s., v.d., c.1910-1980 (qty) ⁂ David and Frank David Higham were authors of literature, poetry and drama, several plays in the archive having their musical accompaniments. Originally working with other partners since 1935, David Higham founded David Higham Associates in 1956, with a successful career as a prominent literary agent, the firm representing writers such as Muriel Spark, A.C. Clarke and Keith Waterhouse. Still in business today, the agency is particularly renowned in the field of children's literature having championed the work of Roald Dahl, Jacqueline Wilson and Michael Morpurgo among others.
Berlin (Sven) Who Wrote Joke Grim?, 'out of series' proof copy from an edition of 6, illustrations, tipped-in frontispiece, manuscript letter, postcard and draft of 'A Boy from the Buildings' from publisher Malcolm Macintosh loosely inserted, original pictorial wrappers, each with a different illustration by Berlin, 1993; and various publications, exhibition catalogues and newspaper articles relating to Berlin, v.s. (small qty).⁂ Berlin (1911-99) was a major figure in the St Ives artists' colony, but fell out with many of the others such as Ben Nicholson, and exiled himself.
NO RESERVE Betjeman (John) Ghastly Good Taste, manuscript copy in black, green and blue inks in a neat hand, the title calligraphic, folding plates "The Growth of Good Taste" and "The Street of Taste" loosely inserted, original half cloth, 8vo, [c.1933].⁂ A curious item, clearly not by Betjeman himself but possibly a form of publisher fair copy. The reference to Mowbrays of Margaret Street is present on p.119 and was swiftly suppressed from the printed version so this copy was likely taken from a very early or pre-publication example.
Stoppard (Tom) Travesties, early reprint, Michael McClure's copy with his ink ownership inscription and manuscript notes for two short poems to endpapers, rear endpapers torn out and loosely re-inserted, original pictorial wrappers, light creasing at joints, 8vo, 1975.⁂ The full ownership inscription reads, 'Michael McClure, Cambridge University, Oct 30 1975, Caius College, Gonville Room'. The poems written in McClure's hand seem to have been inspired by his environments in England where presumably he was on a visit; one is entitled 'November London' and the other 'All the yellow gold and coppery England underneath an autumn Cambridge Sky'. McClure (1932 - 2020) was an American poet, playwright, songwriter and novelist. He was a key member of the Beat Generation, a literary movement that explored and influenced American culture in the post-war period. McClure participated in the famous Six Gallery reading of 1955 where Allen Ginsberg read 'Howl' in public for the first time and he is the origin of the character Pat McLear in Jack Kerouac's novel Big Sur. From the collection of Ira Nadel, American-Canadian biographer of Stoppard, literary scholar and critic.
Douglas (Lord Alfred) Autograph Letter signed to Josiah Wedgwood MP, 2pp., folds, lambasting him for his "pitch of rage" against Collin Brooks, editor of The Truth, "Only, take care you don't get sacked yourself before you have realised your glorious, democratic dream of the complete suppression of free speech and a free press", Hove, Sussex, October 16th, 1941; Sonnets, first edition, typed poem "Sonnet on the Sonnet" with typed initials "A.D." at foot and single manuscript correction loosely inserted, original boards, spine ends and corners a little bumped, rubbed, 1909; Sonnets, first edition, signed presentation inscription from Stevie Smith to front free endpaper, frontispiece, light toning to margins, original cloth, spine slightly faded, 1935, 8vo (3)
Eliot (T.S.) The Cocktail Party, publisher's dummy copy with small manuscript correction by Eliot to p.29, signed by the author on title with printed name crossed out, original cloth, spine faded, dust-jacket, small tear to upper cover, spine head lightly bumped but still overall a clean and crisp example, 8vo, 1950.⁂ A curious copy with Eliot's signature and correction to a dummy edition.
Gregory Rudd (American, B. 1952) "F. Scott Fitzgerald" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 23c F. Scott Fitzgerald stamp issued September 27, 1996. Born on September 24, 1896, F. Scott Fitzgerald attended Princeton University, where he penned amateur musical comedies. In 1917, the restless writer left Princeton without a degree. He enlisted in the army, where he wrote a draft of The Romantic Egoist -- the original manuscript of what was to become his first published novel. Revised extensively and renamed This Side of Paradise, Fitzgerald's account of the newly-liberated generation of the Roaring Twenties was the first of its kind. Published in 1920, it garnered Fitzgerald instant fame. However, the gleeful excesses of his new lifestyle soon soured for the author, a sentiment reflected in Fitzgerald's second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922). In 1924, he joined the "lost" society of American expatriates living on the French Riviera that he later described in Tender Is the Night. Shortly after arriving in France, Fitzgerald completed his most celebrated novel: The Great Gatsby. Its haunting portrayal of the American Dream and its ultimate corruption made The Great Gatsby the quintessential American novel of its time and Fitzgerald's most cherished work. In 1940, the author died of a heart attack, leaving his most promising work, The Last Tycoon, unfinished. Fitzgerald was almost as renowned for his turbulent private life as for his timeless literary works. He brought to his short-stories and novels the intense romanticism and decadence that epitomized the lifestyle of his generation in the Roaring Twenties. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 16.75 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B15539)

One of 150 num. Copies of the deluxe edition in vellum (GA 900). - Edited and with a commentary by Otto. Mazal, Vienna. The Vienna Genesis with the illuminated text of the first book of the Old Testament was produced in the Syrian-Palestinian region in the sixth century AD. "Despite its incomplete state of preservation, it still offers the most beautiful and largest cycle of biblical images. After the extensive destruction of the so-called Cotton Genesis, an Egyptian-Alexandrian Genesis manuscript of the 5th or 6th century, the Vienna Genesis is also the oldest surviving document of a Genesis cycle" (explanatory text).

Marginalien, einige andere Seiten sehr leicht stockfleckig. Handgeschriebener Kurztitel auf dem Vorsatz.(Letters from the fathers and brothers of the Society of Jesus, who went to the kingdoms of Japan, written in the years 1549 to 1571 to those of the same society. In which news is given of the various customs and idolatries of that gentility, as well as fidelity to their principles and success and benevolence of the Christians of those parts is told.) With numerous wood-cut initials. 5 (of 8 or 9) not paginated leaves (leaves 3-6 with dedication and 2 prefaces), 1-315, 1 p., 4 (of 6) not paginated leaves (table of contents). Contemporary limp vellum with manuscript title to spine and marbled boards. - Exceedingly rare nowadays in trade, only 2 auctions records since 1906. - First European printed book to contain Chinese and Japanese characters. Copy from the library of the counts of Harrach with their oval collection stamp "Ex bibliotheca Viennensi" on dedication leaf (5 recto). The Harrach's are an Austrian and Czech noble family and were among the most prominent in the strongly Catholic Habsburg Empire. - First Spanish edition of "Cartas que os Padres e Irmos da Companhia de Iesus", the first European printed book ever to contain Chinese and Japanese characters. For a long time bibliographers had wrongly quoted the books of Escalante (1577) and Mendoza (1585) about China, or the atlas of Ortelius (1584) to be the first publications with Chinese and Japanese characters. Charles Gallaud. Manuscript in French describing the first French electronic voting machine. 15 pages handwritten text and 9 hand drawn diagrams in different coloured inks in the text. Blue plain wrappers with later title in pencil. - Very clean and legibly written. The technical drawings extremely fine and precise. - The voting machine was invented and patented by the engineer Gallaud in 1861. A year later it was presented to the Société d'Encouragement and finally to the Société des Ingénieurs civils in 1864. That same year, the Senate tested the machine and, as Molinos reported in the Bulletin de la Société d'Encouragement, it was praised. The first proposal for the use of voting machines came from the Chartists in 1838, and among the radical reforms called for in The Peoples Charter were universal suffrage and secret ballot. The Chartists then published Schedule A, a description of how a polling station was to be run, and Schedule B, a description of a voting machine to be used in such a polling station. Their voting machine, attributed to Benjamin Jolly in Bath, allowed each voter to cast a vote in a single ballot. To do this, a brass ball had to be thrown into the appropriate hole in the top of the machine next to the candidate's name. The ball advanced a clockwork counter for that candidate as it passed through the machine and then fell out the front for the next voter. In 1875, Henry Spratt of Kent obtained a US patent for a voting machine that represented the ballot paper as a series of push buttons, one for each candidate. In 1881, Anthony Beranek of Chicago patented the first voting machine suitable for use in a general election in the United States. In July 1936, IBM mechanised the casting and tabulation of ballots for single transferable elections.
