* World War Two. An archive of letters, postcards and documents, together with two photograph albums, relating to Leopold Koller, a Viennese police officer who served in the German police in Poland during the early years of the Second World War (Cracow by January 1940, and Lodz, called Litzmannstadt, during 1941) with the Mounted Detachment of the Cracow Police Department, circa 1939-1941, comprising approximately 45 letters in pencil or ink, in a typical German gothic handwriting style, from Leo Koller to his wife Elisabeth (Elli) and daughter Helene (Helli), 58 postcards (a few unused, and including some post-war, addressed to Wilfried, and also Peter Cope in Liverpool), and several other related documents (2 birth certificates, in German and English, for daughter Helene, Viennese streckenkarte for Helene for 1945, and a photograph of Wilfried in policeman's uniform dated Liverpool 1947), all contained in 2 small boxes, together with a related photograph album, with manuscript pictorial title 'Meiner kleine Helli zur Erinnerung, Krakau Dez. 1939', containing approximately 85 photographs of family and holidays (much dating from 1945 and 1946), all with handwritten captions in German, original cloth-backed carved wooden boards, lightly rubbed, small oblong 4to (18 x 23.5 cm)QTY: (3)NOTE:This group of letters, postcards and documents relates to the Viennese family of Leo Koller, his wife Elisabeth (Elli) and their daughter Helene (Helli), born in1927. The family were Catholic. Elisabeth was born in Cracow (1904) and her parents were not German. Leo (born 1898) was already serving in the Austrian police at the time of his daughter’s birth. After the Anschluss he served in the German police which was increasingly dominated by the SS. By January 1940 he was in Cracow and the following year served in Lodz, He worked in mounted formations. Despite his long police service, in early 1940 he was still only a sergeant (Hauptwachtmeister). The letters and postcards (1939-1941) are all from Leo to his wife and daughter. Although he mentions receiving correspondence from his wife this does not appear to have survived. A partial inspection of the correspondence suggests that the content focuses on domestic matters, including food, leave arrangements and travel movements, with little (unsurprisingly) on the murderous Nazi occupation of Poland. It seems Leo and Elli had a stormy relationship. On one occasion he tells his daughter he is coming to Vienna on leave but does not know where he is staying, so obviously not with his wife at the family home. On another, he wants his wife to do his laundry and tells her that if she has no time for him she won’t be hearing from him again. There is also a hand-written letter of uncertain date from the Mounted Detachment of the Cracow Police Regiment informing Frau Koller of Leo’s death. This interesting archive requires further close examination.

Smyth (1788-1865) was an important figure in the scientific world and was particularly recognised for his contribution to astronomy. His telescope was erected at Hartwell and was given to Dr Lee. Having completed his observations in 1839, Smyth relocated to Stone, Aylesbury, and his observatory was dismantled, the telescope sold to Dr. Lee and re-erected at Hartwell House in a new observatory designed by Smyth. Smyth still had occasion to use this instrument as his residence at St. John's Lodge was not far away, and again he made a large number of astronomical observations from 1839 to 1859.

This Congo expedition was his third one made to central Africa and had on this occasion the endorsement of the French government. The expedition's aim was the exploration of the Kanem region east of Lake Chad, an area largely uncharted by Africa's colonial powers up to that time. The expedition lasted nearly fourteen months and its members faced difficult conditions and hostile threats as they travelled overland and by river from Brazzaville to Lake Chad, some two thousand kilometres through what is now the People's Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and Chad. Hottot was accompanied by three other men on the expedition: Albert Guinard who returned home after falling ill shortly after the expedition began; Léon Poutrin who acted as doctor and later published several contributions to African ethnography; and Georges Barbat who did not survive the expedition.A large collection of photographs, equipment and documents (including diaries kept by Robert Hottot from 4 June 1906 to 2 March 1908) relating to the expedition was donated to the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, in 1994. Objects collected by Hottot are also held by the Musée du Quai Branly, Paris, the British Museum, London, and the Natural History Museum, London. This diary has been in private hands in England for over fifty years.

By then the estate was encumbered with mortgages, but once he had cleared those and settled death duties, he put the estate up for sale and moved to Kinsham Court. Jack was educated at Eton, where he published short verses in the college magazine, and thereafter at Christ Church, Oxford, where, in 1895, he was awarded the Newdigate Prize for poetry for his epic 'Montezuma'. (His own verdict, confided to his mother, was 'not at all satisfied with it & am doubtful about sending it in. I think it is just above the average of a bad year.') He published a volume of poetry The Last Muster (1901) in response to the Boer War which drew a favourable response from Rudyard Kipling. However, it is for his Great War hymn, 'O Valiant Hearts' first sung on 5th August 1917 at Westminster Abbey to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of war, that he is best remembered. His words were sung at the burial of the Unknown Soldier, at the dedication of the burial flag of Ypres, and at the consecration of the Houses of Parliament and Menin Gate war memorials. They were also recited by the Premier of Canada over the transatlantic telephone at the unveiling of the Canadian memorial at Vimy Ridge. The tune is still played annually at the Cenotaph in London at the Remembrance Sunday service. He was described as the 'inspired interpreter of the nation's deep and inmost feelings'. He was knighted in the 1934 New Year's honours list. This attractive volume is divided into naval and land sections, and was presumably produced for an unnamed high-ranking official. The naval content would have proved invaluable to Samuel Pepys at a time of a great expansion in the number of ships. Having resigned as Secretary of the Admiralty in 1679, and survived his imprisonment in the Tower on trumped up charges of treason, Pepys was seeking to rebuild his reputation and re-establish himself in the Navy. Two years after the latest date found in the present volume (1682), he returned from an official voyage to Tangier and was appointed King's Secretary for the affairs of the Admiralty. The first ship listed in the volume is the famous Sovereign of the Seas, renamed Royal Sovereign by Charles II following her rebuild at Chatham in 1660 as a first-rate ship of the line. Here we find confirmation that she was built at Woolwich in 1637 by 'Capt. Pett'son' [Peter Pett, Master Shipwright, son of the King's Master Shipwright Captain Phineas Pett], and that she had 815 men and 100 guns when 'At home', 710 and 90 respectively when 'Abroad', and 605 and 90 when at 'Peace'.Pepys is known to have owned several fine bindings produced by the Naval Binder, to whose work our binding bears strong similarities, and this is possibly the work of a successor, also attached to the Admiralty (H.M. Nixon, English Restoration Bindings, 1974, p.37). The style also bears some similarities to a 1684 William Cox binding described and illustrated by Mirjam Foot in Studies in the History of Bookbinding (no 27, p.202-3).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Graesse IV, 151. Wohlerhaltenes Exemplar.
