*Williams (Thomas Richard, 1825-1871). Portrait of Katharine Agnes Kelsall and her younger sister Frances Penelope Kelsall, both girls seated and one with an open illustrated book on her lap, 1860, stereoscopic daguerreotype, hand tinted, arched top, paper passe-partout, glass separated in two with vertical central crack, seals torn with some loss, contemporary manuscript paper label to verso identifying sitters and the photographer and date, 'Taken in 1860 by Williams, Regent St.', 8 x 17 cm The two girls are the youngest sisters of the children shown in the preceding lot. *Emin Pasha Relief Expedition (). 'What I Heared [sic] & Know about the Emin Relief Expedition', by Richard Edward Dennett, circa 1900, unsigned autograph manuscript, 13 pages on rectos, occasional revisions, paper fastner to top left (a little rusted), a little frayed and creased, short closed tears, contained in modern cloth foldover case, 4to Dennett offered his services to the Expedition on behalf of the British Congo Company, and gives details of conversations with Stanley, Barttelot, Troup and others. He recounts the animosity between Stanley and Barttelot "Stanley would have thought little of shooting Barttelot", Barttelot's brutality, the Jameson scandal, and his unfavourable reception by the press "I placed the real state of affairs before a meeting of the "Balloon Society" & quoted figures to prove how little if any relief had been given to Emin, but as my report was unfavourable to the great undertaking my remnants were treated with the contempt that the press thought that they deserved". *George II (King of Great Britain and Ireland, 1683-1760). An early document signed, 'George R' at head, Kensington, 20 June 1727, appointing John Nutt a lieutenant in the regiment commanded by Lord Cadogan, pre-printed form on vellum, completed in manuscript, blue revenue stamps, lacks papered seal top left, countersigned at foot by Viscount Townshend [1674-1738, secretary of state], 1 page, oblong folio The document was prepared exactly nine days after the death of George I and is probably one of the first executed under George II's reign. *Etruscan Vases. A group of 32 well-executed pencil drawings of Etruscan vase designs, 19th century, all showing human figures and some with border decoration details, drawn on buff paper of varying sizes, approximately 10 x 15 cm and smaller, pasted to old album leaves and loosely inserted in a contemporary damp-stained paper folder with manuscript title 'Servitures - Vases Etrusques, Tome 3e', 8vo (32)
*George I (King of Great Britain and Ireland, 1660-1727). Document Signed, bold 'George R' at the head, circa 1720, manuscript leaf on paper from an Establishment Book, written on both sides, giving ledger account details covering the establishments of Portland Castle, Portsmouth, South Sea Castle, Sheerness, Scilly Island, Scarborough Castle, Sterling Castle, Tynmouth [sic] Castle and Upnor, and show the wages received by the officers and men (including chaplains, surgeons, etc.) in respect of their daily pay, and giving the total for 365 days, the largest establishment in these accounts (pages numbered at the head 19 and 20) is Portsmouth, totalling ,941 8s. 4d., the governor receiving £1 18s. 14¼d. per day and the gunners a shilling each, a few minor marks, old translucent tape strips to inner margin and horizontally at foot of second page, large folio (43 x 29 cm) An especially fine and bold autograph specimen. Binding - Queen Charlotte. The Book of Common Prayer..., Oxford University Press, 1784, bookplates of Viscount Birkenhead and Reginald Roose Francis to front endpapers, all edges gilt, contemporary blue crushed morocco gilt, large gilt circular design with inlaid red sections and small floral tools to both covers, somewhat rubbed, 4to A contemporary manuscript note in a neat hand to front free endpaper verso reads: 'This book appropriated to the use of Charlotte Sophia, Queen of Great Britain, at Worcester Cathedral, when their Majesties & the royal family visited that city in 1788; Was presented by Mrs Ann Bowyer to her esteemed friend James Forbes, 1790'. The following four pages before the title comprise manuscript prayers in the same hand. (1)

Hobson (William Colling), This Map of Yorkshire is most respectfully dedicated to the nobility, clergy, gentry, landowners and manufacturers of the county, 1848, large scale engraved map by J. & C. Walker, contemporary outline colouring, sectionalised and laid on linen on two sheets, calligraphic title, compass rose and table of explanation, slight offsetting, marbled endpapers, old paper library label to one endpaper, old library stamps to verso of map, each sheet approximately 1250 x 800 mm, contemporary red cloth gilt with metal clasp, stained and worn, rebacked in red cloth with old manuscript library number to base of spine (1)
*Charles II (King of England, Scotland and Ireland, 1630-1685). Letter Signed, 'Charles R' at the head, Whitehall, 22 April 1672, addressed to the attorney general, granting the rights and appurtenance of the office of keeper of the pall mall (or pallmall) to the three sons of Laurence Dupuy and settles on them the annual allowance of 00 and the use of a house or cottage, endorsed 'Warrant for a Grant of the Office of Keeper of ye Pallmall at St James to Mr Depuis [sic] & sons in reverc'ion', countersigned at the foot by Henry Bennet, 1st earl of Arlington, manuscript on paper, a little spotting, 2 pages plus integral blank bearing endorsements, folio The game of pall-mall, or pell-mell, played with a mallet rather like croquet, was popular with the aristocracy in the 17th century, and a court had been laid out in part of St James's near to the royal palace and close to what is now the road known as Pall Mall. Samuel Pepys described in his Diary having seen the duke of York playing the game, and Charles II was himself a regular player. (1)
*Heraldic achievements. Two original pen and ink and watercolour heraldic achievements, mid 19th century, one with motto 'Flecti non Frangi' and with neat manuscript caption beneath identifying this as the arms for the Right Honourable Henry John Temple, [3rd], Viscount Palmerston, KG, GCB, [1784-1865, British Prime Minister], some spotting and soiling, old manuscript label to card verso identifying this as cleaned and repaired by Harry Singleton, 12 March 1934, the second similar with motto 'De von vouloir servir le roi', with crest of a scaling ladder or and supporters of sinister lion rampant crowned or, dexter Bengal tiger rampant, some spotting and soiling, framed and glazed, both approximately 27 x 22.5 cm (2)

Wyld (James), A New Plan of London and Westminster with the Borough of Southwark, 1825, published James Wyld (Successor to Mr Faden), 1825, engraved map with contemporary hand colouring, sectionalised and laid on linen, slight offsetting, marbled endpapers, 385 x 660 mm, contained in a contemporary marbled card slipcase with printed label to upper board, label with additional ink manuscript title, with another another uncoloured folding engraved plan of London, laid on linen, margins frayed, dust soiled, 385 x 535 mm The first map described: Howgego 302, state 2. Cookery Manuscript. A partially filled volume of manuscript cookery recipes by Mary Smith, 1663, 12 leaves of handwritten recipes in brown ink (including first leaf with 'Mary Smith her book 1663'), and 13 leaves of handwritten recipes in brown ink at the other end of the volume, contemporary blind-ruled plain sprinkled calf, rubbed and some wear to head and foot of spine and outer corners, small 4to (19.5 x 15 cm) Recipes including 'to dry Apricocks', 'to make past of Apricocks', 'to make marmalat of Apricocks', 'to preserve Apricocks', 'to make past of Oringes', 'to preserve Oringes', 'to make jely of pippins', 'to preserve quinces red', 'To Make Tumbals', 'to make minsed pies of veale', 'to make a maide dish of almonds', 'to make a Marrow bone pudding', 'to make a sacke posset', 'to make french porige', etc. (1)

Bryant (Andrew), Map of the County of Surrey from actual survey by A.Bryant in the years 1822 and 1823, published June 1st 1823, engraved map with bright contemporary hand colouring, sectionalised and laid on linen on four sheets, each edged with red silk, calligraphic title, compass rose, table of explanation and a table of ecclesiastical divisions, very slight offsetting, red endpapers with later manuscript titles, each sheet approximately 670 x 805 mm, contained in a near contemporary red morocco slipcase with later felt pen manuscript titles to upper board and spines, a little worn at extremities (1)
*Magic Lantern Slides. A large group of approximately 300 diapositive slides of Egypt, circa 1880, including views of ancient monuments, villages and people, mostly professional slides, some with printed or indistinct manuscript captions to edges, contained in 3 contemporary wooden slide boxes (approx. 300)
Convict Transportation. Personal manuscript logbook of three voyages, kept by George Thompson, Master of the 'Joseph Somes' & 'Lord Auckland', including two voyages transporting convicts to Hobart, 1847-52, printed title (not filled in), double column ruled in red, autograph manuscript in a consistent and neat hand, a total of 349 pages, giving daily accounts of each voyage, the First Voyage, on 'Joseph Somes': Woolwich to Hobart and thence to Geelong, 'Bass Strait towards Sydney', Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore, 'Strait of Malacca', Bombay & London, 10 November 1845 to 30 March 1847, 96pp.; Second Voyage, on 'Joseph Somes': Deptford via Cowes to Hobart and thence to Geelong, Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bombay & London, 19 April 1847 to 24 April 1849, 135pp.; Third Voyage, on 'Lord Auckland': Eastern London Dock to Ascension Island, Bombay, Calcutta, China, Singapore, Colombo [Sri Lanka], to London, 15 July 1850 to 8 June 1852, 118pp., contemporary water-staining at beginning and end (affecting first 31 leaves and blanks at end), slightly browned, contemporary half morocco, some wear and lacking most of spine, 4to A detailed first-hand account of life on board ship, which besides giving much information about the sailing, weather and ship repairs, also details incidents involving convict prisoners, including punishments, births and deaths. Also included with this lot is a printed list of the convicts transported on ship Joseph Somes, plus photocopies of the journals kept on board by the ship's surgeons James L. Clarke MD (15 December 1845 - 29 May 1846) and J.W. Elliot (27 April - 8 October 1847). ^NMonday 23rd February 1846: 'At 1/2 past 2 Ruben White an imbecile convict aged 52 years died, he had been for a length of time insane and was a great nuisance to the other prisoners from his filthiness &c. At 6 the surgeon read the funeral service over the corpse and committed it to the Deep'. Saturday 28th March 1846: 'The ship being now out of the Tropics should have reduced the allowance from 8 to 6 pints of water, but the surgeon requested that 7 pints should be served to each of the Guard and Prisoners'. Wednesday 8th April 1846: 'At 1/2 past 12 the chief mate having the watch caught the boy Hall coming out of the pantry where he had been in search of spirits and he had an empty bottle, he at first refused to tell who had sent him, but the mate having beat him with a rope and sent him aloft, he stated that Grendell A.B. had desired him to go into the cabin & endeavour to get some wine out of a gr. cash, but as he could not succeed he had gone into the pantry to try to get some rum instead. He had got the key of the pantry out of the assistant steward's pocket, when he had seen the boy Cox pick it a short time before who had been in the pantry also. On bringing up Cox he acknowledged to have taken a small bottle of rum out of the pantry & that he had done so 4 times before by getting the key of the pantry at night, after much hesitation he said he had got it from Bates (cook's mate) who had instructed him to obtain possession of the key'. Thursday 26th April 1846: 'Immense flight of whale birds (blue petril) skimming along the surface of the water, in all directions'. Friday 25th June 1847: 'At 6 o'clock Robson and Jackson, two ordinary seamen were made prisoners on the poop and kept there until 8 o'clock for fiting [sic] on the main deck, which caused some commotion among the prisoners'. Tuesday 1st June 1847: 'Benjamin Ward a boy (exile) publicly whipped at the gun on the quarterdeck for disrespect to the Capn. of the Guard and disobedience of orders on the 24th for stealing bread from the basket on the 30th and yesterday for threatening the life of J. Drewery (a prisoner) and obtaining a knife for the purpose of carrying his threat into execution'. Friday 16th July 1847: 'At 1/2 past 6 o'clock John Dixon an exile boy publickly whipped at the gun (36 lashes) for disobedience of orders, and making a noise 'after hours''. (1)
Manuscript Pattern Book. A manuscript pattern book, mid 19th century, mostly bold sepia or black ink floral and similar designs for rice basket, glass box and other unidentified objects, mostly drawn to the rectos of approximately 120 thin paper leaves, occasional manuscript notes and knitting or embroidery instructions, several bracelet designs at rear, possibly compiled by Jenny Garrett (Mrs Charles Garrett) whose name appears towards the rear, giving the place name [?]Beenleah [Beenleigh in Totnes, Devon?], dated 1844, a few pen or pencil cartoons scattered, blanks at rear,some old dampstaining throughout without loss of ink, modern half morocco gilt, slightly rubbed, 4to (26 x 21 cm) (1)
Morrell (Ottoline, 1873-1938). A scrap album compiled by Lady Ottoline Morrell, circa 1914-20, containing newscuttings, portraits from magazines, some photographs or reproductions of photographs, mainly covering the war, politics and the arts, including Philip Morrell's election as MP for Burnley, newscuttings relating to Roger Casement, pictures of the war including bomb damage and soldiers near the front line, prisoners, etc., a substantial coverage of the Irish Rebellion of 1916, including all the main participants, the signing of the Versailles Treaty, the Russian Revolution of 1919, ballet and film coverage, including the Ballets Russes, Charlie Chaplin, women's fashions, a photograph of the Spanish singer Raquel Miller, signed and inscribed to Lady Ottoline Morrell, a portrait photograph of Julian Huxley, reproductions of recent English works of art, etc., all mounted on over 60 pale blue album leaves, all edges gilt, original straight-grained half morocco, lettered in gilt to upper cover 'Manuscript Extracts 1899 O.C.B.', rubbed and scuffed with some wear to joints and extremities, folio Provenance: From the library of Philip and Lady Ottoline Morrell, thence by descent. Scrap albums. A Victorian scrap album, containing mostly wood-engravings including portraits and views, plus some manuscript material, cuttings, a Valentine, etc., some loose, contemporary half morocco, worn and upper cover near detached, folio, together with a smaller album containing small engraved views and several 19th-century pencil drawings, plus a group of three sketchbooks of Helen McKie, circa 1920s, comprising sketches of people, trees, etc. (5)
[Kitchiner, William]. The Cook's Oracle: containing Receipts for Plain Cookery on the Most Economical Plan for Private Families... the Whole being the Result of Actual Experiments instituted in the Kitchen of a Physician, 3rd edition, 1821, 60 or so additional blanks bound at front, with manuscript notes and numerous early newspaper cuttings mounted, occasional cuttings bound in throughout text, after C1 a blank leaf with early manuscript recipes on both sides 'Sydney Smiths Receipt for Salad' and 'To Roast a Swan', C2 torn with loss at head affecting a few words, scattered spotting, two bookplates, contemporary calf, rebacked, 8vo Oxford p.145-146 and Bitting p.262 (in notes only). The cuttings mainly consist of original newspaper announcements of publication for numerous 18th century cookery books, with the date added in manuscript if not in the text. If all the books announced were actually published and all the inked dates were correct (and there is no reason to assume they were not) many queries would be answered. For example a cutting dated Dec. 1758 announces "Now published, in 2 volumes, The British Housewife". Cagle 574 explains that 'authorities have varied widely [in] assigning dates to this work'. A fascinating item with several other food related clippings including humerous poems, and Christmas 1789 and 1790 Bills of Fare for the Bush-Tavern, Bristol. (1)
Manuscript music. Four volumes of manuscript music of quartets composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, mid 19th century, including quartets for 2 violins, viola & cello (comprising work nos. 59, 75, 95, 127, 130, 131, 132, 135), all neatly written in brown ink over manuscript staves, few pencil additions, contemporary half sheep, joints cracked, worn with some loss of leather to spines, 4to, together with Blackman (W., publisher), The Harmonic Cabinet, or Vocal Harmonist, in Miniature..., Selected from the best Authors, Ancient and Modern, 3 volumes, 1821, engraved titles and music, occasional spotting and dust soiling, contemporary half morocco, some wear to extremities, slim 16mo in 8s (7)
*Botanical watercolour. A collection of eleven watercolours, circa 1900, watercolours of orchids, ferns, amarylli and agapanthus, titled in manuscript to mounts, each approximately 350 x 250 mm, mounted, framed and glazed in uniform gilt beaded frames The watercolours consist of :- Cattleya Labiata Insignis, Cattleya Autumnalis, Cattleya Trianae, Cattleya Mendelii, Amaryllis, Cypripedium Mastersianum Superbum, Madame Dalliere, Alsophylla Australis, Asplenium Marginatum, Agapanthus Insignis [and] Deutsche Perle. *Pattern Design. A group of approximately 30 manuscript mostly floral pattern designs, 19th century, mostly pen and ink, some with watercolour, the majority executed on one side of single sheets of laid paper of varying sizes but many approximately 42 x 33 cm, with one contemporary folio sheet inscribed 'Mr Vaughan's Patterns' (approx. 30)
North America. An album containing 84 mounted gelatin silver prints of California, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico, circa 1909, including buildings and views, trains and railways, some with figures, mostly with manuscript captions pasted beneath, images 8 x 14 cm and similar, partly broken, disbound, oblong 8vo (1)
Macdonald (Duncan). The New London Family Cook, or Town and Country Housekeeper's Guide, Albion Press, for James Cundee, 1808, engraved portrait frontispiece (a few spots), ten engraved plates, one relaid, one with short closed marginal tear, 4 pp. Family Tradesmen's Directory, scattered spotting, light dampstaining affecting a few leaves, blanks at front and rear with some early manuscript recipes, contemporary mottled calf, extremities worn, rebacked preserving original spine, 8vo, together with Hall (T. ), The Queen's Royal Cookery: or, Expert and ready Way for the Dressing of all Sorts of Flesh, Fowl, Fish: either Baked, Boiled..., With the Art of Preserving and Candying of Fruits and Flowers..., Together with several Cosmetick or Beautifying waters..., 4th edition, 1729, frontispiece and final printed leaf in facsimile, full-page woodcut illustration, light dampstain to lower right corners throughout, occasionally close-trimmed, clipping a few headlines, later endpapers, contemporary sheep, top of spine worn with small loss, front cover with dampstain to lower right corner, 12mo First item: Cagle 841, Bitting p.297, in notes only. However Cagle appears to not be aware of this edition, dated 1808 from the title-page. (2)

Family portrait, 1860, showing two young boys, one holding a cricket bat and one with closed book held on his knee, in a group with three young girls, hand tinted, arched top, paper passe-partout, manuscript label to verso, inscribed with names of sitters and identified as 'Taken in 1860 by Williams, Regent Street', 8 x 17 cm The contemporary label identifies the sitters as brothers and sisters John, Thomas Strettell, Elizabeth Harriette, Helen Isabella and Mary Lucy Kelsall. According to the 1861 England census they lived with two other sisters and their parents Thomas and Harriet Kelsall at 14 Portchester Terrace North, Paddington. The father's occupation is given as surgeon. (1)
Bhutan. East India (Bootan). Papers Relating to Bootan, presented to Parliament by Her Majesty's Command, 15 February 1865/Further Papers Relating to Bootan, 8 February 1866, 2 volumes, 339 pp. & 116 pp., folding lithographed map in first volume, light soiling to titles, manuscript numbering top right to first volume, later cloth, first volume a little rubbed, folio Scarce accounts of Anglo-Bhutanese relations at the time of the Anglo-Bhutan War of 1864-65, including Sir Ashley Eden's failed mission to Bhutan in 1863-64. Eden was sent to negotiate with the Bhutanese regarding the harbouring of Sikkimese dissidents and free trade but as the mission was unarmed he was forced into signing a humliating treaty, which resulted in the war with Britain and subsequent ceeding of territory. Document Signed, 'Anne R' at the head, Given at Kensington, 12 April 1706, appointing John Burnett ensign 'in the Regiment of Foot to be forthwith raised for Our Service Commanded by Our Trusty & Welbeloved Colonell Roger Townshend; of that Company whereof he himself is Captain', manuscript on vellum, age-soiled and lacking the papered seal, but entirely legible, inlaid in archival paper, oblong folio (24.5 x 36 cm) Roger Townshend, who died in 1709, was MP for Nortfolk and later for Great Yarmouth; he was the brother of Charles, second Viscount Townshend (1674-1738), politician, diplomatist and agricultural innovator, who earned the nickname 'Turnip Townshend' for his championship of the humble vegetable, which he cultivated in a new fashion and used in a successful scheme of crop rotation. Journal of a Young Drogheda Lawyer& Member of The Rowing ClubCo. Louth: Manuscript: A Notebook, 21 x 17 cm, headed: "The Journal Scribblings of Laurence J. Branigan, youngest son of a far better man of the same name, of 18 Shop Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth, inscribed this 24th day of May 1914." Continues to 16 Sept 1922, with postscript dated 18 Dec 1939. 80 pp, the rest blank.In 1914 Branigan was an 18-year-old law student; he subsequently graduated as a solicitor (there is still a law firm of Phelan Branigan in Drogheda). The journal contains some family news, verses are interspersed from time to time, and there is much about the Drogheda Rowing Club, including a picture postcard showing the club's crew, stroked by the author, winning the Regatta of 1914. [1857 Indian Rebellion, Bibighar Cawnpore massacre] A period model carved wooden cross on printed-paper-covered truncated pyramidal plinth, under glass dome, the plinth bearing an inscription detailing the origin of the cross, extracts from which read "This Cross is a fac-simille of the monument erected over the Well in which the bodies of the murdered Women and Children were thrown on the Outbreak of the Indian Mutiny at Cawnpore...The upper part of this Model is made of the tree which was growing over the Well." The model is accompanied by a contemporary manuscript letter further detailing the background of the model.
Medieval illuminated manuscript Psalter or Book of Hours in Latin with gothic book-hand on animal parchment. Single column, 16 lines per page, capitals in red, blue decoration, several initials in burnished gold. 240 leaves. Later leather binding with remnants of clasps, including several pages of notes on laid/chain-lined paper before the Medieval parchment Psalter opens with calendar. Armorial bookplate for Ernest Edward Baker (1854-1931) who resided at Aldwick Court, Somerset.
Unusual 19th-century manuscript children's story / fairy tale, entirely handwritten, including original watercolour illustrations depicting ghosts, witches, fairies, demons. 'Life and Adventures of the Princess Bluebell'. A charming and intriguing story with surreal artwork. Simple red binding, octavo. Complete, first couple of pages loose but present.
