Archive of sheet music comprising approximately 100 original manuscript scores (in pencil and ink) on Chappell paper, most signed and dated by Ornadel (autograph scores), together with numerous corresponding photostat copies and typewritten lyrics. Arranged by date and housed in four Boosey & Hawkes folio library bags (1957-1960; 1961-1964; 1966; 1970-1972), together with a separate packet of material relating to Cinderella (1966). Provenance: the first, McGuire Collection, # 7, manuscript label to base; both, Wilders Collection, labelled. Condition Report: Larger boat good with some light nibbles at interior rim, surface wear, firing stresses, nibbles to foot rim and blemish to handle. A 19th century Swiss table-top cylinder box, by Nicole Frères, Geneva, Range No. 1680, and numbered 37119, playing six airs on a one-piece comb, the hooked-and-folding side enclosing a key-wound hole, Stop/Start and Change/Repeat selectors, rounded rectangular hinged rosewood and marquetry cover inlaid with a leafy scrolling cartouche centred by a sprig of country flowers, enclosing a printed and ink manuscript blue tune sheet, faux rosewood base, 46cm wide, c. 1870

Apothecary to Charles II and to the College of Chelsea.- Garnier (Isaac, apothecary, of Vitry-le-François, Marne, 1610-92).- Louis XIV (King of France, 1638-1715) Permission given to Isaac Garnier to become Apothecary to Charles II, D.s. "Louis", ?secretarial signature, manuscript in French, on vellum, docket at head in another hand, yellowed and creased, 222 x 363mm., 6th July 1682.⁂ After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1648, Isaac Garnier escaped to England. In 1691 he became Apothecary General to the College of Chelsea. Charles II must have intervened with Louis XIV to obtain this document giving permission to become apothecary to Charles II.
Wordsworth (William) Poems...including Lyrical Ballads..., 2 vol., first edition, engraved frontispieces, a few pencil corrections and annotations, some later leaves with manuscript notes bound in, some foxing, later buckram with gilt-lettered spine labels, ownership inscription of J. de la Mare Rowley (nephew of Walter de la Mare), 8vo, 1815.⁂

Spanish Netherlands.- Farnese (Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands 1578-92, 1545-92) Open letter relating to the death of his predecessor John of Austria who had just died, D.s., "Alesandress", manuscript in French, 3pp., a few small holes and tears, slightly foxed, creased and browned, folio, Bouges, October 1578; and another in the same scribal hand marked Copy and referring to diplomatic relations with Queen Elizabeth I of England, folio (2 pieces).
Newgate Gaol.- Adair (James, judge and serjeant-at-law, recorder of London, ?1743-98) Order that sentence of death on James Coogan, Thomas Riley, Elizabeth Goldsmith and others be carried out on Wednesday the third of September, D.S. "James Adair", manuscript, 1p., hole where seal removed, folds, browned, folio, 1788.
Remission of execution.- George III (King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and King of Hanover, 1738-1820) Remission of execution of Richard Higley who was "tried and Convicted of an Assault", D.s. "George R" and "Spencer", manuscript, 2pp., conjugate blank cut away, blind paper seal, folds, browned, folio, 7th March 1806.
American Indians.- Austin (F.) Autograph Letter to his brother Thomas Austin, 3pp. with address panel, sm. 4to, Drummonds Island, Lake Huron, 1818, "... I was ordered up to the Red River with the Commission who were appointed to investigate the late disputes between the Hudsons Bay Company and the North West [Company]. I took 40 men with me... . The distance from this place is 1400 miles, and in part inhabited by Indians, we went in Canoes. This is a most miserable place, we are entirely amongst Indians, and for six months have no communication wt the lower country...", 2 tears with small loss where opened, folds, browned; and another manuscript, Death Song of the Cherokee Indians, [by Anne Hunter, printed 1784], v.s., v.d. "Geo H Baird" and others, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, lacks seal, folds, yellowed, 360 x 482mm., 1st August 1826; and 9 others including: a 17th century receipt and a 19th century commonplace book, and a quantity of used Penny Red stamps, v.s., v.d. Emerson (Ralph Waldo, American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, and poet, 1803-82) Autograph manuscript memoranda or a draft of part of a letter to a friend, 1p., sm. 4to, n.p., [?Concord], [Massachusetts], 18th February, n.d. [c. 1850s], "The liberation of the will from the Daemon is the end gain of this mundane state...", folds; and an accompanying ALs from Emerson's son, Edward Waldo Emerson (1844-1930), physician, writer and lecturer sending the above as a souvenir of Emerson's handwriting, v.s., v.d. (2 pieces).⁂ "The enclosed... memoranda is a loose leaf shut into one of the journals. From the handwriting probably made between 1850 & 1860. The cancellation shows that those passages were used. NO RESERVE Trafalgar Square statue.- Napier (Sir Charles, army officer, conqueror of Sind, 1782-1853).- On the Inauguration in Trafalgar Square... of the Statue of General Sir Charles Napier erected to his memory by national Subscription the most numerous subscribers being Private Soldiers, manuscript poem, 4pp., initialled at end, folds, slightly browned, sm. 4to, 29th November 1856; and 4 ALs.s. by Napier, including one letter dated 1824, "As I before told you I cannot afford to lose my commission my private income is 265£ per Anm. of which 200 have been settled upon another person - on the remaining 65£ I could live, my military income amounts to above one thousand pounds yearly...", folds, browned, v.s., v.d. (5 pieces).
Shropshire.- Charter, I, William son of Umfrey de Umfriston have granted and confirmed to Agnes his daughter a messuage in Oldfield, near the land of John de Picheforde, witnesses: Langton de Holmehale, Langton de Beame, Henry de Bispeston and others, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, lacks seal, small hole in lower margin, 3 small holes in text (2 along folds), slightly creased and soiled but legible, n.d. [c. 1270].
Disturbance in Westminster.- Neile (Richard, Archbishop of York, as Bishop of Rochester and Dean of Westminster, 1562-1640) Document requiring William Turpin to appear at the Castle in St Joan's Street to keep the peace towards Anne Robinson of Westminster widdowe, Ds. "R. Roffens", manuscript on vellum, folds, slightly yellowed and soiled, 117 x 255mm., 11th October 1609; and 5 other similar documents, v.s., v.d. (6).⁂ First mentioned: "This Willm Turpin is appointed by the Steward Lords & Burgesses of westmr for the reformyng of abuses... in Cryme &... other noisome Cattle... ."
Gloucestershire, Tockington.- Poyntz (Sir Hugh, soldier, fought in Edward I's wars in Wales, Gascony and Scotland, 1252 - c. 1307) Charter, I Hugh Poynz soldier have granted and confirmed to John de Brokenberwe four acres of land in Tockington and mentioning Bristol, witnesses: Peter de Crok, Richard de Kyngeston and others, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 14 lines, indented at head, good red wax seal, small hole not affecting legibility, slight stain at right of document, folds, slightly browned, 150 x 200mm., 1305.
Norwich (Sir Walter de, chief baron of the exchequer, d. 1329) Charter of Sarah du Brok, late wife of Peter du Brok of Wysete [Wissett] and a daughter of Sir Peter de Melles (Mellis), late lord of the manor of Mellis and toft of Halesworth, confirming the grant made by her brother Peter to Sir Walter of Norwich, knight of the aforesaid manor, witnesses: George de Thorp, John de Preston, John Hauteyn of London, James Beauflour and others, manuscript in Anglo-Norman, on vellum, 18 lines, in brown ink, 3 small holes, some browning and creasing in places, red wax seal appended, some damage to part of seal, 135 x 240mm., London, 8th July 1326. ⁂ Marked "Duplicat" and with contemporary endorsement that it was enrolled in the Close Rolls.

West Yorkshire.- Charter, I William Hepworth of Ruston have granted and confirmed to John son of Ada of Thyckholme [Thick Hollins] a messuage and three acres in the town of Meltham, witnesses: Oliver Woderove, Thomas Chanworth Rector and others, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 18 lines, wax seal, cracked, folds, slightly yellowed, 170 x 290mm., 1426.
17th century mathematician.- Briggs (Henry, mathematician, bap. 1561, d. 1631) Autograph Latin inscription signed "Henricus Briggs Geometria professor Oxoniensis": "Pulvis et Umbra summus. Sine Christo pulvis et umbra...", manuscript, 11 lines, inscribed in the Album Amicorum of Michael Corvinus of Hungary, small piece of corner cut away, browned, 106 x 168mm., 16th July 1623; and 8 other manuscript fragmentary ff. of works in Latin, v.s., v.d. (9 pieces).⁂ Henry Briggs became the first professor of Geometry at Gresham College, London, where he lectured on Napier's logarithms.
Dover.- Release by Thomas atte See & William atte See of Folkestone to Thomas Crowch of a tenement abutting the town of Dover, witnesses: John Babay, Robert Stratton, Thomas Combe and others, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 7 lines, 2 wax seals with good impressions, one seal broken with small loss, small hole at fold, slightly creased and browned, 62 x 295mm., 5th January 1428.

Sandwich.- Brooke (William, tenth Baron Cobham, nobleman and diplomat, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, 1527-97) Inquisition relating to William Crisp Mayor of the Cinque Port of Sandwich, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 19 lines, large remains of wax seal of Sandwich and lacks 6 other seals, some slight surface wear affecting legibility, folds, slightly creased and yellowed, 160 x 275mm., 1584.
NO RESERVE Overbury (Sir Thomas, courtier and author, bap. 1581, d. 1613).- Monson (Sir Thomas Monson, first Baronet, politician, 1565-161) Final concord in the king's court before Sir Edward Coke Sir Augustine Nicolls and others between Robert Monson, William Monson and Dorothea his wife and Thomas Monson relating to land and property in Baswick in Lincolnshire and Spaldforde in Nottinghamshire, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, in Chancery hand, folds, slightly creased and browned, 190 x 440mm., 1613.⁂ Sir Thomas Monson was Master of the Armoury at the Tower of London and in this capacity was arrested in the aftermath of the inquest into the poisoning of Sir Thomas Overbury. He was arraigned at the Guildhall in December 1615 and was imprisoned in the Tower, but released after a year.Sir Edward Coke Coke (1552-1634), lawyer, legal writer, and politician.
Kent.- Titchill (John) A note of such... var names... [suits]..., manuscript, 3pp., folds, browned, tipped-in on album f., folio, 27th July 1631; and 10 other manuscript pieces, v.s., v.d., 17th - 19th centuries (11 pieces).⁂ Includes: "In Dover and the libities"; Tenterden, Lydd, Romney, Hastings etc.
Commonwealth Navy.- Disbrowe (John, parliamentarian army officer and politician, commissioner for the admiralty and navy, bap. 1608, d. 1680).- Petition signed by Abraham Granger to Major General Disbrowe, informing them of a delinquent's estate of £15,000 and how Colonel Ven had tried to claim it as his own, manuscript, 1p., edges chipped, folds, slightly creased and browned, folio, January 1654.⁂ Granger was an informer on delinquents who could be stripped of their property if they could not pay the fine for compounding for their estates. Granger could expect to be given a percentage of the fine.
NO RESERVE Luttrell (Francis, of Dunster Castle, Somerset, lawyer and politician, 1628-66) Copy letters, 1p., folio, manuscript, 1st November 1656 - 1st May 1666, regarding various transactions including a tenant called Minestones in the parish of St Cleeve, and several mentions of the St Aubyn family, tears along folds, extensively browned.
Regicide.- Heveningham (William, regicide, of Ketteringham, Norfolk, 1604-78).- The Title of Mr. Heveningham's 2 houses [in Drury Lane], manuscript, 2pp. & conjugate blank, tear along central folds without loss of legibility, slightly browned, folio, 1670. ⁂ This document gives the history of ownership of these two houses in Drury Lane from 1625 when sold by George Digby Earl of Bristol to John Browne, then Heveningham's acquisition of the properties, his attainder for treason, and the king's grant of the forfeited property to Viscount Cullen, Sir Ralph Bankes and others.William Heveningham, parliamentary officer was a judge at the treason trial of Charles I, but refused to sign the death warrant, though he later assented to the execution. He was tried as a regicide at the Restoration and sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment. He died a prisoner in Windsor Castle in 1678.
Tate (Nahum, poet, playwright, and translator, c. 1652-1715).- Anne (Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, 1665-1714) Our Will and Pleasure is That... You Pay... unto the Respective Persons... named... the Severall Sums set against their names as of our free Guift & Royall Bounty... Godolphin, manuscript copy, 2pp. with conjugate blank, 2 holes along folds, slightly creased and browned, Post horn watermark, folio, 17th April 1705; and 3 other documents, including: a document issued on behalf of Charles II and signed by Peter Arbuthnet, 1681, and a document of Sessions in the West Riding of Yorkshire, 1788, v.s., v.d. (4 pieces).⁂ "Nahum Tate for his Supplement to the New Version of Psalms l50.""Tate's religious commitment became increasingly evident in his later years. He... published, from 1694, A New Version of the Psalms of David, Fitted to the Tunes used in Churches (first complete edition, 1696; revised version, 1698; supplement, 1700)." - Oxford DNB.
Cumberland solicitor.- Bleaymire (Thomas Dobson, solicitor, of Penrith, Cumberland) Memorandum book, manuscript in several hands, c. 340pp., ruled in red, a few ff. working loose, slightly browned, original reversed calf-backed boards, worn, head and tail of spine chipped, folio, 1829-39.⁂ Mentions various Cumberland families, including: John Wordsworth, William Wordsworth's nephew, regarding the sale of Sockbridge Hall in 1838; the Musgrave family of Eden Hall etc.
Shetland Islands Minister.- Bayne (Rev. Alexander, minister of Tingwall Kirk, Shetland, 1828-1907) The M C Trustees of the Rev Mr & Mrs Bayne [Copy of legal agreements relating to the marriage of the Rev. Alexander Bayne and May Mc Culloch], manuscript, 108pp., ruled in red, original half reversed calf, gilt and red morocco label on upper cover, folio, 1900-08.
Ege (Otto F.) Fifteen Original Oriental Manuscript Leaves of Six Centuries, number 20 of 40 copies (limitation slip laid down on portfolio), 7 manuscript leaves only of 15, each mounted in thick paper mounts and with printed description attached to 3 leaves, loose as issued, modern portfolio retaining sections of original binding with lettering, some surface wear where label has been removed, 215 x 180mm. & 100 x 130mm. and other v.s., folio portfolio, n.p., v.d.
