Late 19th century AD. A substantial but incomplete Islamic Qur'an text in manuscript with some illuminated pages, ruled in double lined red borders, written in a neat, scholarly hand; the later endpapers comprising manuscript text panels in a different hand for title and last verses; rebound with original ornamented board panels preserved and pages trimmed, now protected with a plastic wrap. 1.38 kg, 30 x 21cm (12 x 9"). Property of an American gentleman; acquired on the US art market. Good condition; well thumbed to lower page corners.
Mid 10th-late 12th century AD. An Oakeshott Type Xa or Petersen type X long sword, the blade is elegant, finely tapering and fitted with well-formed fullers running down to within few centimetres of the point, the cutting edges are also in good condition and bear evidence of battlefield use; on both sides the fullers are decorated with laten inlays: on one side two fish-dragons facing each other, on the other opposed tridents formed by three arrow points; both sides of the blade also reveal traces of an inscription: on the side of the marine monsters, set within the fuller (at a distance of about 10 cm from the cross-guard) begins after a stylised monogram (the remains of a damascened cross of Jerusalem?), but now only the letter R is clearly visible; on the other side the letters are scarcely visible, only the monogram; the well preserved cross-guard is long about 20cm and in good condition, gently tapering, of the type known by the Vikings as gaddhjalt (spike-hilt), this added hilt would have given the hand of the owner considerably more protection without increasing the weight; the tang is very stout without a minute taper and ends with the usual walnut style pommel. See Leppäaho J., Spateisenzeitichle Waffen aus Finnland: Schwertinschriften und Waffenverzierungen des 9-12 Jahrhunderts, Helsinki,1964; Peirce, I., Swords of the Viking Age, Suffolk, 2002; Gilliot, C., Armes & Armures, V-XV, Bayeux, 2008; Janowski A., Kurasi?ski T., Pud?o P., 'A sign, a_symbol or a_letter? Some remarks on omega marks inlaid on early medieval sword blades', in Acta Universitatis Lodziensis Folia Archaeologica, 29/2012, pp.83-110; D'Amato R., Spasi? Duri? D., 'The Phrygian helmet in Byzantium: archaeology and iconography in the light of the recent finds from Branicevo', in Acta Militaria Mediaevalia, tom XIV, 2018, pp.29-68; this sword finds good parallels with one sword published by Peirce, preserved in the Musée de l'Armée, Paris (Peirce, 2002, p.131) and with a sword published by Leppäaho (1964, p.14 and pl.5), if it is the case, the inscription could be the same INLERURIEITI visible on this latter, which Peirce refers as having some important meaning in Antiquity; not to exclude however other inscriptions, like the one visible on a similar 12th century German sword published by Gilliot (2008, p.121) reporting SPES MEA JESUS PER OMNES... (Jesus my hope amidst all trials..."). 1.25 kg, 92.5cm (36 1/2"). Property of a Suffolk collector; formerly acquired on the European art market in the 1990s; accompanied by an academic report by military specialist Dr Raffaele D'Amato Most probably our specimen is coming from a battlefield or from a grave. Many swords of similar type can be classified as of German manufacture, and we know these kinds of pommels were in use until the 13th century. This one handed sword presents the same Brazil nut pommel of the swords visible on the lost miniatures of the Hortus Deliciarum (D'Amato-Spasi? Duri?, 2018, p.53), a German Manuscript of the second quarter of 12th century. The straight guard with thick straight quillons are typical of the style Xa of Oakeshott, a kind of sword that, with its double-edged blade, combined the cutting and the cut-and-thrust styles. The fullers, like in this case, are very marked and form not less than two thirds of the length. For a medieval warrior, and especially for a western miles (knight) the sword was closely associated with everything was most significant in a man's life-family ties: loyalty, valour in the excitement of the combat and funerary rites. A warrior was never parted from it: he carried in it in the king's hall and on all social occasions. It hung at his back when he was at table and by his bed when he was sleeping. The sword was his shoulder companion and we can well understand the lament of the Viking poet Bersi the dueller, a famous swordsman of 10th century, complaining that when he could not more weld a sword, life would hold nothing more interesting: The Trolls may have my life when I can no longer redden keen Laufi, then you may carry the destroyer of the mailshirt into the howe. Fine condition.

BADEN-POWELL ROBERT: (1857-1941) British Lieutenant General who, in 1899 during the Second Boer War in South Africa, successfully defended the city in the Siege of Mafeking. Later Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement. Autograph Manuscript signed, with his initials BP, three pages, 8vo, Waiho Gorge, Westland, New Zealand, n.d. (1934), in pencil, on the printed stationery of the Glacier Hotel at the Franz Josef Glacier. Baden-Powell's manuscript, with several corrections throughout, is entitled On a Glacier and states, in part, 'As I write this I am sitting on a bluff on the shoulder of one of the great mountains which rear their snowclad heads high above me on every side. In front and below me runs a wide valley which is filled from side to side with a vast white sheet of ice; not the sort of ice you know at home but a jumbled mess of blocks and waves and walls of ice. It is a glacier, or frozen stream, a mile wide and twelve miles long from where it starts…..I can see three tiny moving specks some two miles away on the glacier. These are my two daughters mountain climbing with their guide. Dressed in breeches and puttees and heavy iron-shod climbing boots and armed with ice axes for cutting steps in the ice and with goggles to escape the glare of the snow, they love the excitement of clambering over those great slippery crags…..As for me I am taking it easy, sitting on my bluff and gazing over this mighty frozen torrent. There is a steady rumbling hum in the air, just like the roar of the traffic in London as you hear it sitting in Hyde Park. This rumbling is the sound made by that vast mass of ice slowly, slowly grinding its way over the rocks and stones beneath it. Watching it and standing on it you can perceive no movement, but moving it is all the same…..It behaves just as a stream of water does in running down a steep water course, the difference being that it is all a solid block of ice….' The final page is lightly and neatly laid down to a page most likely removed from a scrapbook and the first two pages are neatly laid down to the left edges alongside. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG The present manuscript was most likely written in preparation for Baden-Powell's book Scouting Round the World (1935) which records the Chief Scout's round-the-world voyage undertaken in 1934 in the company of his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, and their two daughters. The book features a description of his observations as his daughters climb the Franz Josef Glacier.
[WORLD WAR I]: EDWARD VIII (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A fine autograph manuscript, unsigned, four pages, 4to and slightly smaller, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 1919). The boldly penned holograph manuscript, with a number of corrections, is the draft of a speech made by the Prince of Wales at a dinner in honour of Marshal Foch following the end of World War I and states, in part, 'This is an occasion of such unique & historical interest that I find it very difficult to address such a so distinguished an assembly. It is indeed a great honour for me to be presiding here this evening & that it should fall to my lot to propose such a wonderful toast; it is almost impossible for me to find adequate words……to welcome so many famous allied commanders…..At this dinner are gathered together, comrades in arms drawn from many nations…..who have been engaged in a long & desperate (sic) struggle against the most powerful military combination that the World has ever known & who have emerged from the struggle completely victorious……France & Paris have already celebrated peace & our overwhelming victory; the other allied nations & their capitals will doubtless do the same. But just now we are celebrating it all in the British & London way & I feel that yesterdays triumphal pageant was a brilliant success. We feel that it represented the great war, that it represented victory in every sense of the word & that no one who was present could fail to carry away but the proudest & most inspiring memories which will last a life time……To me as one of the younger generation these memories will be specia particularly vivid as during my periods of active service in several theatres of war I often had the priviledge (sic) & good fortune of being closely associated with many of our allied armies army corps divisions & even regiments…….It is obvious that this last greatest of world struggles has broken all records from every point of view but I would venture to point out that never before has so large a number of allies been fighting & working together…..Now that the great war is over & the powerful enemies that have so long disturbed the peace of the World & menaced our freedom are finally overthrown & subdued we all rejoice to welcome here those who have shared with us the perils & sufferings of the trying & strenuous campaign & who now share with us the joy of our victory. Representative of every allied power are present this evening but there is one power whose representative has occupied a unique position. In Marshall (sic) Foch we salute the great captain…..His position as a Supreme C. in C. has no comparison in history either from the point of view of power or responsibility. In this position he has revealed a genious (sic) for war equal to the greatness of his task & the magnitude of his difficulties'. Together with a further selection of holograph notes, unsigned, four pages, oblong 4to and 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 2019), being the Prince's briefer manuscript notes prepared in composing his speech, with various corrections and the different sections each marked with an ink and blue indelible pencil line, the notes concluding with a passage in French, 'C'est pour moi un tres grand honneur et tres grande joie de vous acceuillir ici au nom du Roi et de boire a la sante des grandes nations allies dont vous etes les representants distingues Je n'ai qu'une pensée ce soir "vive nos braves allies"' and his Toast to Foch, 'The Commanders & representatives of the armies forces of our allies coupled with the name of Marshall (sic) Foch'. A rare manuscript with interesting content. A few slight stains and minor age wear to the preparatory notes, the manuscript speech VG, 2 Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) French Marshal, a General and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander from March 1918. The 'triumphal pageant' which the Prince of Wales describes as having taken place the day before in the present manuscript was undoubtedly the Victory Parade Peace Day held in London on 19th July 1919. Although fighting on the Western Front had ceased in November 1918, peace negotiations would continue for many months and the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until June 1919. When negotiations were reaching their conclusion and a 'proper peace' was within sight, a peace committee was founded to decide how Great Britain would publicly mark the end of World War I and acknowledge the widespread feelings of jubilation within the country. With a Bank Holiday having been agreed upon, on the morning of the 19th July thousands of people gathered in London to participate in a spectacle, the likes of which had not been witnessed before. Almost 15,000 troops participated in the victory parade which was led by the Allied commanders Douglas Haig (British Commander-in-Chief), John Pershing (Head of the United States Expeditionary Force) and Ferdinand Foch (Allied Supreme Commander). The latter received the honour of being created a Field Marshal in the British Army on the same day and was evidently honoured at a dinner the next evening when the Prince delivered his speech. A monument to those killed and wounded, designed by Edwin Lutyens, was unveiled in Whitehall to mark the end of the victory parade. Although it was a temporary construction, another made from Portland stone and designed by Lutyens was to replace it in 1920 and, known as the Cenotaph, still stands today.

I am surprised about these people you have given to me by both being so good in their talks, to Chaka and Mpande and Cetshwayo and Dinuzulu……What I see is that Hoye is a proper Praiser and is bright to learn new praises like Mkebeni. I hear that the tiger blanket which was worn by praisers before hasn't got it whereas as I can see it appears as if he should not be given at the moment a garment of that nature because even his praising is now difficult. As I originally told you that the praises of Kings in my possession are many because I have been collecting them for years from many people in Zululand and Natal and were contributed by Tshingana and Ndabuko and Mkhungu and Mgidhlane'. VG, 2 James Stuart published his History of the Zulu Rebellion, 1906, and of Dinuzulu's arrest, trial and expatriation in 1913.
