Mount (Richard & Page, Thomas, publisher). The English Pilot. The Fourth Book. The English Pilot was published in five separate volumes. Volume four can be considered the first English sea atlas of the Americas. Although volume four was first published in 1678, the Mount & Page edition of 1784 contains several new and important charts. 'A Draught of South Carolina and Georgia' by Andrew Hughes was added in 1778 and the frontispiece of 'A New and Correct Chart of the Western and Southern Oceans' by Edmund Halley is one of the landmark maps in English cartography. The 'Chart of New York Harbour' and 'A Map of the Coast of New England' appear for the first time in this edition. The hand writing on the verso of the map of New England and the ownership signatures on the title and pp.B appear to be by the same hand. His observations are those of a professional seaman - his name appears to be Pearse - and he has added an annotation to the map stating, 'By a good Observation, the 6th April 1789 I find the South part of the Isle Sable Bank to be Lattde 42o 49m N. NB Sounded directly after Observing with 155 Fathom no Ground'. One can safely deduce that the atlas travelled with Pearse on a voyage accross the Atlantic Ocean to North America, making its survival in almost original condition, all the more remarkable. (1)
