Thomson (William, First Baron Kelvin of Largs, 1824-1907). Two autograph letters signed, ‘William Thomson’, The Athanaeum, 10 May 1871, & The University, Glasgow, 11 February 1875, both to Mrs [Archibald] Smith, the first glad to hear that Archie continues to improve, suggesting that June would be the best time for a cruise, the remainder of the letter largely giving details of a boating expedition, including Holy Isle, The Bristol Channel and Plymouth, ‘. on getting out I found the Blue Bell (schooner, 170 tonnes, belonging to an old Glasgow college class fellow of mine, James Stevenson (which had left the Clyde two days after me and was bound for Spain & the Mediterranean). As I passed within short hailing distance they told us they were on the point of sailing for Cadiz. My nephew, Bottomley, and his father were with me and I wished to show them something before sailing for Portsmouth we stood out for the Eddystone [lighthouse] and weathered it very nicely on one long tack sailing quite close to it, and weaving round to the South to return to Plymouth Sound.’, 12 pp., the second beginning, ‘I have had the enclosed proofs for a few days but until today I have not been able to go through them as I wished to do before sending them to you. You will see that I have made two or three slight changes in the manuscript slip you sent me.’, continuing with further information and questions concerning the print run, etc., 4 pp., both 8vo. (2).

Russell Thayer at the Dinner Given May 27, 1898, by Citizens of Philadelphia to Captain Robert C. He fought with them during the campaign in Italy in 1848-9 and was present at the battle of Novara at the siege of Venice. He also served with the 12th Hussars and the 1st Hussars of the British German Legion. His diplomatic career began when he was nominated Vice-Consul at Theodosia, in the Crimea, in February 1858. He held various other posts before moving to America in October 1879, finally retiring on a pension in 1898. (2).
Cookery and Lotteries. An unusual scrap album, 18th century and later, the album originally used for accounts plus Irish and English lotteries, late 18th and early 19th century, giving dates, names and sums paid, the album later reused with some of the ‘less interesting’ entries pasted over and including manuscript and printed cookery receipts from the late 19th and early 20th century, a total of approx. 150 pp. including manuscript index of recipes, some spotting and soiling, contemp. reversed calf, broken and worn with contents loose, remains of the label ‘Private Accounts’ to spine and upper cover, folio. The original compiler may have been from the family of Robert Shaw (1749-1796), founder of the Royal Bank of Ireland and MP. There are handwritten references to members of this family including Edward Briscoe, William Shaw (brother), Bernard Shaw and Mary Shaw (son and daughter?). The sums of money listed as loans and debentures for the Irish lottery are huge, one totalling over 544,000 pounds (30 million pounds today). The recipes were possibly added by Lady Eleanor Hester Shaw, wife of Sir Frederick Shaw of Bushey Park. Several letters containing recipes and a postcard are addressed to Lady Shaw at Bushey Park, Terenure. A note signed by E. Shaw in 1897 on the second leaf states ‘The receipts in this book are stuck over those pages only, of which the entries are quite uninteresting’. (1).
Crimea Diary. Manuscript or Diary of a Soldier, George Page, No. 7 Company, 3rd Regiment of Infantry, The Buffs [so titled], a total of seventy-five leaves of neatly written manuscript on light blue paper, the purpose that the account is written up for his sister, then beginning with his enlistment into the 3rd Buffs at Leamington on 28th June 1854 at the age of 16 years and 6 months, from there the Regiment goes to Ireland where George is taken ill and undergoes an operation under chloroform, in February 1855 setting sail for the Crimea aboard a steamer and then into fighting in the siege of Sebastopol, ‘I heard a gun shot and looking up saw something flying through the air. I stepped smartly two or three paces to my left. If I had stood still it would have cut me to pieces’, at the end of the summer and the end of the siege George’s Regiment sails for Corfu where they experience an earthquake, two years later they move on to India, from there and by now a Corporal, the Buffs went on to China, George working in the kitchens preparing meat, but also seeing action when some 200 were killed fighting off a charge of Chinese cavalry, returning to England in 1860 via Hong Kong and Capetown, the whole written up in 1863, final leaf detached, later gift inscription to Fred Hughes from C.A.N., dated 1910, contemp. vellum, sl. soiled, 4to. (1).
Eliot (George, 1819-1880). A series of five pen and ink drawings of Eliot’s childhood home, Griff House, and related scenes in Warwickshire by Herbert Gilchrist, c. 1880s, the first two drawings signed, the third, fourth and fifth drawings with some bodycolour, all with pencil captions, the first showing the old kitchen garden of Griff House, the second the garden of the Hall Farm, the third the old farm entrance to Griff House, the fourth ‘The Hall Farm - the exterior only of which served as a model in “Adam Bede”‘ and the fifth of ‘The Canal near Griff Hollows, the red deeps - a very familiar spot to George Eliot in her youth’, some browning, each drawing approx. 16 x 25cm and sl. smaller, sellotape marks and further annotations to versos, plus a later fragment of a manuscript note stating that these are five scenes in Warwickshire associated with George Eliot. George Eliot and her husband G.H. Lewes rented Brookbank from Mrs Anne Gilchrist [widow of the Blake biographer Alexander Gilchrist] where they lived from May until August 1871. Here Eliot was able to concentrate on Middlemarch away from the noise and bustle of London. The contact between the two families was sustained up until George Eliot’s death. The biography by her second husband John Walter Cross, ‘George Eliot’s Life Related in her Letters and Journals’ was published in 1885 and it is for this book that Herbert Harlakenden Gilchrist (1857-1914) hoped to provide illustrations. In 1884 he sent a selection of drawings of Griff House to Blackwood with an accompanying letter (NLS MS 4456, f212). Gilchrist visited Nuneaton and met Isaac Evans, George Eliot’s brother who had lived at Griff House since George Eliot left to live in Coventry in 1841. Blackwood seems not to have used Gilchrist’s drawings of Eliot’s childhood home which featured in her description of the fictional Dorlcote Mill in ‘The Mill on the Floss’. Today Griff House is a hotel, retaining many of the original features of Eliot’s time. Included with this lot is related paperwork from the National Library of Scotland and the George Eliot Fellowship (1999 & 2006 respectively). (5).
