Illuminated Manuscript Antiphonal Leaf. lluminated leaf on vellum from a German antiphonal, probably Rhineland, circa 1450-1475, with large historiated initial A in dark red decorated with white ink on a background of burnished gold, incorporating a scene of the Three Marys at the Sepulchre: the Virgin Mary in blue with white headdress, the other two Marys in pale pink standing by the sepulchre with an angel in white with blue wings and gold halo pointing to the empty tomb (approximately 9 x 11 cm), with additional scene to the lower margin showing the risen Christ in a garden setting bursting with flowers and lush grass, appearing to the Three Marys each bearing a casket, eight lines of text in dark brown ink in Gothic Book Script (textualis), one smaller initial in red, above each line of text four equidistant horizontal lines ruled in red ink, with musical notation in dark brown ink, the left and right borders with elaborate foliate decoration in gold and colours, with flowers and birds, and to centre of right border a small grotesque head with the torso of a blond-haired man above, some staining and consequent discolouration, mainly to lower left and along lower margin (mainly affecting one area of text to the lower left and along the bottom edge of the leaf), to verso also eight lines of text in brown ink, several letters in red, and two smaller decorative initials, one in colours and the other in red, old (probably 19th century) gilded wood frame, double-glazed (glass cracked to verso), sheet size 45.5 x 33 cmQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Houstoun-Boswall family, Blackadder House, Berwickshire, Scotland, and by descent. An impressive large-scale illuminated leaf from a 15th-century German conventual mass antiphoner, undoubtedly executed by a nun, in the style known as Nonnenarbeit (nun's work), the imagery usually characterised by doll-like faces with pink cheeks and fair hair and exaggeratedly grassy foregrounds with flowers. Such works would tend to emphasise the role of women at the Resurrection, consistent with use by nuns. The antiphoner, or antiphonal, contained the choral parts sung during the celebration of the Divine Office or Mass celebrated by a monastic or other community, and was usually written in large format so that the (often small) choir could read the music together. The text begins with excerpts from Psalm 3, line 6, and Psalm 4, line 9: Ego dormivi et somnum cepi et resurrexi quoniam Dominus suscepit me (I was asleep and took my rest, and I have arisen, for the Lord sustains me), and from the Book of Matthew, chapter 28, line 2: Angelus Domini descendit de coelo, et accedens revolvit lapidem, et super eum sedit (An angel of the Lord came down from heaven, and rolled back the stone, and sat on it).

Illuminated Manuscript Antiphonal Leaf. lluminated leaf on vellum from a German antiphonal, probably Rhineland, circa 1450-1475, with large historiated initial A in dark blue decorated with white ink on a background of burnished gold, incorporating a scene of the Resurrection, showing a standing Christ in benediction wearing a purple robe, with halo and holding a staff, two attendant angels with blond hair in red and green, two sleeping soldiers in blue red and brown, the sepulchre in two shades of pink, two green trees in the background and grass in the foreground (approximately 14 x 15 cm), eight lines of text in Gothic Book Script (textualis), two smaller initials in red and blue respectively, above each line of text four equidistant horizontal lines ruled in red ink, with musical notation in dark brown ink, the borders with elaborate foliate decorations and geometric patterning in gold and colours, including a lion and cubs, a pelican with chicks in a nest, and another green bird with a golden crown, some staining and consequent discolouration, mainly to lower portion (generally not affecting the illuminated Resurrection scene), to verso also eight lines of text in brown ink, with some letters in red, and three decorative initials in blue or red, old (probably 19th century) gilded wood frame, double-glazed (glass cracked to verso), sheet size 45.5 x 33 cmQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Houstoun-Boswall family, Blackadder House, Berwickshire, Scotland, and by descent. Such works would tend to emphasise the role of women at the Resurrection, consistent with use by nuns: here the lion with its cubs and the pelican in her piety are both symbols of the Resurrection from the medieval bestiary: lion cubs are born dead and on the third day the father lion licks them into shape (literally) and they come alive; the pelican plucks her own breast to bring her dead chicks back to life with her own blood. The text on the recto is taken from the Book of Matthew, chapter 28, verse 1 (often used for Holy Saturday): Vespere autem Sabbati, quae lucescit in prima sabbati: venit Maria Magdalene, et altera Maria, videre sepulchrum, Alleluia (And in the end of the sabbath, when it began to dawn towards the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalen and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre, Alleluia). The verso contains the cantus from Psalm 1, verse 1, line 2: Ego sum qui sum, et consilium meum non est cum impiis; sed in lege Domini voluntas mea est (I am what I am, and my counsel is not with the wicked, but my will is in the law of the Lord).

The school's Old Building, constructed between 1557 and 1586, is the home of a rare example of a chained library. It was established on the death of John Parkhurst, Bishop of Norwich, in 1575. Although defined as a 'free' school, the first statutes of governance, approved in 1608, saw the introduction of school fees at the rate of 4 shillings per annum, along with the school's first admissions test.

STATUE DE MANJUVARA ET PRAJNAPARAMITA EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉNÉPAL, DATÉ 1779 APR. J.-C.The back of the base has a dedicatory inscription dated Samvat 899 corresponding to 1779 CE.Himalayan Art Resources item no. 4854 32.5 cm (12 3/4 in.) high Footnotes:A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF MANJUVARA AND PRAJNAPARAMITANEPAL, DATED 1779 CE尼泊爾 1779年(據銘文) 銅鎏金文殊金剛及般若波羅蜜多像Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s Identified by the sword and manuscript he brandishes in his primary hands, Manjuvara is a three-headed and six-armed tantric form of Manjushri. Seated in royal ease (lalitasana), he is joined in blissful union by his diminutive female consort, Prajnaparamita, who embodies the sutra of the same name. Here, she comfortably mirrors her consort's seated pose as she pinches the stem of a blue lily in the gesture of teaching (vitarka-mudra). The bronze's inscription, translates to: 'May it be good: The third of the bright half of Phalgun, in the year 899 (ca. February 1779 CE) was the day on which (this) statue of Mahamanjushri, made in their own names by Chikidhikara Vajracarya and his wife Jaya Lakshmi, residing in Dharmadahtu Mahavihara of the great city of Shankapura, (Mod: Sankhu) was consecrated. May it be good.' Bonhams is grateful to Ian Alsop for his assistance with translating the inscription. This consecration by husband-and-wife donors supports a more romantic interpretation of the divine couple, as Dr. Pal observes, 'when Prajnaparamita holds a blue lotus, the book placed on it is the Kamasastra, the manual of physical desire rather than the lofty Paramita treatise. Curiously, Manjushri is sometimes identified specifically with Kama, god of desire' (Pal,Asian Art At the Norton Simon Museum, vol. 2, 2003, p. 96, no. 62). Although relatively slimmer in proportion than their Early Malla counterparts, images from the Late Malla period are often adorned with elaborate, flaming aureoles to stress the cosmic power of their respective deities. Examples of Manjuvara-Prajnaparamita pairs that share this double-layered arch can be found in von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, 1981, pp. 389, 391 & 392, nos. 106F, 107F & 108C.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Maharajah Ranjit Singh on horseback with attendants and sepoys Punjab, Lahore, probably from the workshop of Imam Bakhsh Lahori, circa 1830-40gouache and gold on paper, orange and pink borders 289 x 228 mm.Footnotes:Maharajah Ranjit Singh was known as a natural horseman and his love of horses was legendary. He expended considerable sums to maintain a large stable of Arabian thoroughbreds. It was a common saying that the price of the entire city of Lahore was equal to the cost of the Sikh king's horses. The two soldiers that form part of the guard in this painting are men of the infantry, an arm of the Fauj-i-ain or regular army. The Maharajah's meritocratic character and pragmatic approach towards realising his ambitions in the early days of his empire-building career led him to create a modern army made up of all manner of warrior tribes and nations. Hindu Gurkhas, Biharis and Oriyas, as well as Muslim Punjabis and Pathans, were skilfully blended together with the Sikhs to form 19th Century Asia's most formidable fighting force. While his generals were all members of Punjab's new nobility, the men were drilled and marshalled by several dozen foreigners. They included former Napoleonic generals and English deserters from the ranks of the East India Company. Along with Italian, American, Spanish, German, Irish and Greek soldiers of fortune, all contributed to the new army's uniquely cosmopolitan fusion of military cultures. Taking the regular infantry as an example, Ranjit Singh made sure he hand-picked each man. These recruits would be drilled using French words of command. In this Europeanised army, each soldier was given a red jacket every two years. These jackets had a lion, an elephant or a panther on the right sleeve to designate the regiment. Superior officers had no uniformity in their dress. According to General Court (one of the French officers in the Punjab), 'many wore Brandenburg jackets embellished with gold or silver, and an odd cut, poorly imitated from our hussar uniforms'.The painter Imam Bakhsh (active circa 1825–45) was employed by the Sikh nobility but produced commissions for Claude Auguste Court and Jean Baptiste Ventura, French and Italian generals in Ranjit Singh's army. In 1838, General Ventura had French artist Alfred de Dreux paint a large oil painting based on a similar equestrian portrait of the Maharajah by Imam Bakhsh to present to King Louis-Philippe of France (Musée du Louvre Inv. 4096). In 1841 Imam Bakhsh painted another comparable equestrian portrait of Maharajah Ranjit Singh for General Court (Musee Guimet BG 399756).The present composition is closely connected with an illustrated folio (f. 284a) in a manuscript in the Royal Ontario Museum (and sold in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 28th April 2005, lot 115) of the Ain-i-Akbari (Chronicles of Emperor Akbar), Lahore, 1822, which shows Ranjit Singh riding, a parasol above him, surrounded by attendants. The Maharajah sits in an almost identical riding posture, holding a kerchief, and the three men behind the Maharajah and his mount are portrayed in the same poses (other figures are different). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Sven BERLIN (1911-1999)'Spectre'Two unpublished manuscripts and a folder of correspondences with Berlin's publisher Anthony Dent of Gallery Press LTD, dated 1961.'Spectre' is one of Berlin's many semi-autobiographical texts. Here he speaks of his mother and father's life prior to his birth, and of his early life in London. He recalls the financial hardships his family faced and his first encounters with the practice of drawing; inspired by a visit to the National Gallery. Similar to that of his other texts, Berlin uses pseudonyms in replacement of his family members' names.First Draft signed and dated January 1972. Final Manuscript signed and dated January 1973, whilst Berlin was living on the Isle of Wight with his third wife Julia.'Spectre' although unpublished, is part of Berlin's collection of semi-autobiographical texts named 'The Dome of Glass'. With five texts included in this collection, (Spectre, Pride of the Peacock, I Am Lazarus, The Dark Monarch and Cold Eye), each text represents a chapter of Berlin's life that is characterised by different 'quests'. They exist individually as notable works, yet when together form a significant and complete image of Berlin. He writes - 'This work is conceived as a dome in which the pieces of experience - the coloured glass - are fitted, giving in the end an experience larger than itself. If one thinks of a whole personality as a tree growing under the dome of glass with roots deep in the universal mind the force is at once given as a growing organism reacting toward eternity.' Each book is a singular root of experience, which collectively form the tree (Berlin). 'Spectre' is said to be part one of the six 'roots', and is characterised by his 'Quest Through Innocence'.
