Joseph Pease (1688-1778), son of Robert Pease, a merchant in Amsterdam, came to England in 1709 and by the 1730s had established his oil and paint business in Hull, which provided the financial basis for the formation of what is believed to be Yorkshire’s first bank, in 1754, in partnership with his son Robert (1717-70). Robert’s death meant that Joseph had to choose between an orphaned grandson, Joseph Robinson, later Pease (1752-1807) heir to a cotton business in Manchester, and his bastard grandson, Robert Copeland Pease, the product of a union between Robert Pease and Margaret Copeland. A Louis XIV or Louis XV Silver Butterfield-Dial, Signed 'Butterfield a Paris', Further Marked with French Mark, Almost Certainly Either the Décharge For Étienne Ridereau, Paris, 1684-1687 or the Ouvrages non Chargés Mark for Étienne de Bouges, Charles Yvon, Armand Pillavoine and Charles Cordier, Paris, 1717-1722, elongated octagonal and with folding bird gnomon with adjusts for latitude between 40° and 60°, the front engraved with four chapter rings and with recessed compass, the back engraved with the names of twenty eight European cities and their latitude, with fitted shagreen covered and green velvet lined case with silver button, with later manuscript note, 5.4cm wide by 4.5cm deep Provenance: Captain Edward Arthur Aylmer, D.S.C. (1892-1974), and by descent. The later manuscript note fitted into the cover of the fitted case records this Butterfield dial as: 'A Curious little Sun-dial -- foreign -- intended (as it seems) for the Latitude of 40° to where the bird's beak points -- but could be set to other Latitudes'. While entirely correct that the 'curious' object is foreign the Butterfield who gave his name to this series of objects, including those made by other instrument makers working contemporaneously or later, was Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) who was a British instrument maker who moved to Paris in the 1660s. He seems to have worked for the French Royal court and was appointed engineer to King Louis XIV. He opened a shop in rue Neuve-des-Fosses where fashionable Parisians and others would furnish themselves with scientific instruments such as the present dial. For a further discussion of the Butterfield dial see M. Cowham, 'The Butterfield Dial', Bulletin of the Scientific Instrument Society, No. 133, 2017, pp. 25-28. Though this is a smaller example than other there are a number of similar examples known, including one in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (CIRC.415-1923), catalogued as dating to 1680-1699. It is very similarly engraved to the present, though with a somewhat less elaborately engraved compass and the names of differing cities. It seems to be marked with the same mark as the present example which suggests that the present example also dates to the last years of the 17th century.. Marked on back with French fleur-de-lys mark. There is some minor surface scratching to the silver, though the case has protected the dial from any significant damage. The case has some staining and loss to the shagreen. The lining is somewhat worn.
