Norfolk.- Edward I (King of England D. manuscript in Latin on vellum in a fine charter hand with an illuminated 2-line initial "E" for Edwardus and witnessed by Gilbert de Clare earl of Gloucester Anthony Bek Archdeacon of Durham Hugh son of Otto [?de Grandson] and 2 others 12 lines docketed on verso by Peter Le Neve with his initials "PL" also 2 medieval dockets initial "E" with slight surface wear of gold a few small holes repaired folds slightly creased and yellowed but in remarkably good condition lacks seal 150 x 244mm. Shuldham [Shouldham] 18th January 1281. ***Royal charters of this nature are exceedingly rare. Written the year before Edward I commenced his war in Wales. Gilbert de Clare [called Gilbert the Red] (1243-95) earl of Gloucester and of Hereford; one of the largest landowners in England and one of the most important political factors in the de Montfortian wars of the 1260s first aiding de Montfort in his subjection of Henry III and then helping to overthrow de Montfort by aiding the Lord Edward Henry`s son. Truculent self interested and wayward de Clare was nevertheless a firm friend and political ally of Edward I and would have been much in evidence at court "Between January 1278 and May 1286 he [de Clare] witnessed more royal charters than any of his rank except the earl of Lincoln." - Oxford DNB. Anthony Bek (1) (c. 1245-1311) Archdeacon and later Bishop of Durham; royal official and diplomatist; personal friend of Edward I who helped him raise finance for both his Welsh Scottish and French wars. In 1281 Bek was "warned by Archbishop Pecham of Canterbury that unless he obtained a papal dispensation he would never be considered for a bishopric." Seemingly harking back to the early years of the seventeenth century the text evidently refers to the early eighteenth century and the plight of bankrupts being imprisoned for debt..

Donellan (John poisoner 21pp. 8vo & 4to Lawford Hall 30th January 1775 - 27th January 1781 relating to the financial affairs of her daughter Theodosia Donellan and her husband John Donellan "Mr Donnallan is very desirous of having my Daughters fortune placed in Government Security now Stocks are so very low as much as we can; as soon as possible therefore if you go to Town soon will you be so good as to bye into the 3 per cent reduced Annuities: the Seven hundred pound which was paid into Mr Clays hands by Mr Pearson and take care the stock is bought in the names of Sir William Wheler Bart: and myself as trustees and Guardians for the same" and occasional personal news "my Grand Daughter has got the Smallpox" creased and browned some tears where opened some along folds Poor Law Statute for Bilton Rugby "for the setting to work all the Poor within your Parish" D.s. printed with manuscript insertions 2 small wax seals 17th April 1746; and 3 other letters 2 from William Cardale and 1 from Thomas Skipwith relating to the trial of Donellan pasted down and bound with a printed work by Joseph Gurney "The Trial of John Donellan Esq. for the Wilful Murder of Sir Theodosius... Boughton" 1 page torn with small loss all manuscript items tipped-in foxed and browned ink signatures of two later members of the Harris family on front pastedown contemporary half calf rubbed upper cover detached remains of tape along spine v.s. v.d. folio. ***Donellan had served as a soldier and been cashiered while serving in India for financial irregularities. On returning to England he became part owner and master of ceremonies at the fashionable Pantheon assembly rooms in Oxford Street. In 1777 he eloped with Theodosia Boughton a young heiress and they settled at the family home Lawford Hall near Rugby. Boughton`s brother Sir Theodosius died in suspicious circumstances at the age of twenty after drinking some medicine. Sir William Wheeler Boughton`s guardian requested a post mortem but Donellan prevented this and he was indicted by a jury. While some doubt remained as to exactly what poison killed the young man Donellan was generally agreed to be the perpetrator he was condemned and hanged at Warwick on 2 April 1781..

A Log manuscript printed title with manuscript insertions and 132pp. also 4 accomplished drawings of ships one with watercolour title working loose 1 f. loose some ink staining on a few ff. some browning bookticket of McNair Brown and signature of Veronica Muir on front pastedown original morocco-backed boards soiled rubbed and stained 4to 21st June 1850 - 5th May 1851. ***A lively and well written account of a merchant ship`s voyage to the Far East. "Saturday October 26th [1850] This morning the mizzen royal clewlin... stranded went aloft to clinch it anew & just after cutting off the bad part to my utter dismay it slipped out of my hand & in amongst was slap down on deck where the Capt was walking about `Ha Mr Stewart` he sang out you are frightening me all upon deck here and that was all he said." Entrance to the Canton River. "Wednesday Decr 4th 1850... such a sight as the Bouge forts is indeed worth seeing . On every side of you there are immense fortifications pierced with guns & you could not help thinking that it would be utterly impossible to take them... . But... they have all been taken by British men of war & by the unparaloleled bravery of our British tars. Passed quite close to `Tiger Island` & the fort that the Royal Irish captured & where committed such dreadful slaughter.".

Calligraphy.- The Litany calligraphic manuscript on vellum with one page illuminated in gold, red, blue, green and other colours and some initials, 14pp., some edges and corners creased, bound in full blue morocco, gilt decoration, some slight damp affecting corner of upper cover, slightly rubbed and marked, by F. Garrett, binder, [twentieth century].
World War I (Canadian Army) manuscript 79pp. including 3pp. loose insert in ink and pencil browned original cloth worn faded and stained 12mo Sunday 23rd December 1917 - Saturday 1st March 1918. ***"Sun. 25 August 1918 In the support trenches. Moved up to the front line. Mon 26 Over the top at 3AM advanced a long way. Wounded walked back to dressing station. On the train. Tues 27 In hospital.".

Flight Lieutenant title and printed tables with manuscript insertions 105pp. excluding blank printed ff. slightly browned original cloth stained and slightly faded and rubbed upper joint splitting sm. 4to 4th November 1936 - 15th March 1946. ***Flying Halifaxs Oxfords Wellingtons Moths etc. Includes Operational Raids in Wellington bombers in 1940..
Royal Navy.- Night Order book printed with manuscript insertions 56pp. excluding blanks slightly browned original cloth-backed printed card covers creased and slightly soiled 23rd September - 27th July 1949; and 8 other pieces relating to Royal Navy Ships including "A List of the Flag-Officers..." 1809; Secretary`s copy of Standing Orders for HMS Minotaur 1879-81; Standing Orders - Channel Squadron 1880; "Visit of the Colonial Premiers and the Houses of Parliament to Portsmouth" Sidney Robinson`s copy with his bookplate and an inscription from the recipient 1907; "H.M.S. Hood: A Short Account of her forbears and herself" n.d. most printed various bindings v.s. v.d.(9) ***HMS Vanguard was commissioned in 1946 and was the last battleship to serve in the Royal Navy; in 1947 she conveyed George VI and the Royal Family on their tour of South Africa. Vanguard was decommisioned in the 1950s. .
Account of a journey around Ireland, (probably 1846), 22 page manuscript in an unknown hand detailing coach travel, funerals, scenery and towns, commencing Tuesday June 2nd from Rathdrum and arriving back in Dublin Wednesday 10th, having taken in Wexford, cork and Limerick (Over 5,000 words with much entertaining personal comment)
ARCTIC EXPLORATION. Hortus Siccus or Dried Herbanium collected by Charles Richards, midshipman on H.M.S. Hecla during Sir William Parry`s Arctic Expedition of 1821-1823. 15 mounted specimens within blue sugar-paper bifolia, most with identifying manuscript Linnaean binomial nomenclature (sheet size 182 x 224mm.) One sheet of blue sugar-paper carries the inscription `Flowers from the Arctic Regions found at Igloolik, preserved by Cha`s Richards in the years 1821-2-and 4`, and 15 similar specimens mounted on white Whatman paper (sheet size 177 x 110mm.) (Some examples with minor loss, a few with substantial loss.) Unbound, between later boards.
HOROLOGY. A Victorian Grant of Patent, dated 1870. Two vellum sheets (524 x 778mm. and smaller.) Awarded to Adolphe Nicole for `Improvement in Lever Escapements for Watches and other Time-keepers` engraved with decorative borders and manuscript additions, large attached wax seal. (Some spotting, minor damage to seal.) Contained within original leather-box (slightly scuffed). – And one other document of related interest. Note: Adolphe Nicole is credited with patenting the first practical keyless movement for both fusee and going-barrel watches in 1844.
PRINTED EPHEMERA ARCHIVE. A collection of approximately 250 pieces of printed ephemera, some with manuscript additions, circa 1683–1906. 4 vols., folio (450 x 310mm.) Including political broadsides, election ephemera, shipping advertisements and other documents, tickets, other advertisements, theatrical programmes, banknotes and legal documents of various kind. The majority of items neatly mounted in uniform blue cloth.

Manuscript half-title, decorative title printed in colours, numerous illustrations (many printed in colour) each with manuscript title. Original cloth (slightly discoloured), dust-jacket (minor nicks to edges). – And two works on Sussex (3).
L`ARMESSIN, Nicholas de. Les Augustes Representations de Tous Les Roys de France. Paris: 1714. Folio (265 x 205mm.) Engraved throughout with decorative title and 65 portrait plates, the majority with a manuscript ink inscription verso. (Light browning.) Contemporary speckled calf (extremities scuffed, spine worn). – And four items of related ephemera loosely inserted.
A 14th Century Leaf of Manuscript illustrated with a vertical panel of scrolling foliage incorporating wild strawberries alongside the text with a depiction of St Christopher carrying a child upon his shoulders. Measuring 7 ins x 4½ ins (17.5 cms x 11 cms), in a modern double sided glass frame; the front having a green velvet slip and giltwood border measuring 19¾ ins x 14¾ ins (50 cms x 37.5 cms).
A Large 18th Century Oak Manuscript Box. The two plank top with moulded edge above a front carved with four zig-zag panels enriched with punchwork circles and dividing the three diamond carvings. The engrailed ends running down towards a moulded edge 11 ins (28 cms) in height , 29 ins (73 cms) in width, 22½ ins (55 cms) in depth.
