'His contribution to the development of the theory of absolute monarchy can be seen as part of a Scottish Catholic rejection of Buchanan's interpretation of Scottish history, and in his foreshadowing of the “divine right of kings” an influence on events to come. His contemporary importance in this respect is shown by Gabriel Naudé's publication of his complete works in French and Latin in Paris in 1644, together with a eulogy and an engraving by Picart' (ODNB).

[VD 16 V 2179; not in Adams].Second edition (first published in 1537) of what is commonly described as the first printed model-book for artists, a highly influential work which was reprinted several times into the 17th century, the rarity of surviving copies attesting to their heavy usage, with four copies traced in auction records in the last 100 years, including one of the 1538 edition, the remaining copies from later editions. In his preface, Vogtherr, himself a committed evangelical, presents the work as an attempt to preserve traditional artistic knowledge and craft practices among his German compatriots against the threat posed presumably by the iconoclastic tendencies of the Reformation. ‘Vogtherr probably trained with Hans Burgkmair in Augsburg. After working from c.1522 in Wimpfen, he moved to Strasbourg towards the end of 1525, where he worked as a painter and where he became a citizen in 1526. From 1536 he ran a printing business in Strasbourg, publishing medical works which he probably wrote himself, and a ’Kunstbüchlein' in 1537, a pattern book with designs for painters and decorative artists, to which his son Heinrich Vogtherr, who became a master in 1541, also contributed' (British Museum, online).[Bound after:]2. An accusation of plagiarism was brought by Dürer's widow Agnes and Nuremberg's city council ‘ordered Beham … not to publish any further copies of the treatise and not to sell those copies already printed’ (Smith, Nuremberg: A Renaissance City 1500-1683, 1983, 95). Beham appears to have fled the city as a result, moving first to Ingolstadt before settling in Frankfurt. Gall, Richard and others An archive of manuscript poetry, many by Richard Gall Epistle to Mr. Robert Burns, 9 x 15cm, comprising 7 manuscript pp., initialed ‘R.G. but with notes and corrections in another hand; The Puppy: a poem, in an epistle to a Minor Son o’ Thespis, 12 x 19.5cm, 6 manuscript pp., initialed ‘R.G.’, dated September 1796, with a few small corrections in another hand, with a printed copy accompanying the manuscript (corrections do not appear in print); The Mists o' Love dwell on my Soul, 14 x 19.5cm, part only, initialed R.G., extensively corrected; and 25 further poems with the ‘R.G.’ initial, with a large quantity of other writings by or after other late 18th century Scottish poets, or comprising of communications with publishers (quantity) A curious archive of manuscript poetry and writings, much seeming to be by Richard Gall. “The Mists o' Love dwell on my Soul” can be found printed on p.106 of Poems and Songs by the Late Richard Gall, 1819, with several amendments from the part item found here. The work was published posthumously by Oliver Boyd in 1799, and this collection of manuscripts includes letters to this publisher, along with a document entitled “Proposals for publishing by S. in one vol. duodec. with a hand of the Author The Poetical Works of Richard Gall”. The initials R.G. on many of these manuscript poems, written in the same hand, suggests that much of this is an archive of poetry written by Gall himself. Corrections in another hand - and another ink - could be those of an editor, possibly working for Oliver Boyd. The collection features other poems and writings in other hands, such as “Sonnet Composed at Dunkeld” by the artist and poet, Robert Carlile. It is unclear whether these are in the authors' original hands, or copied. It could be speculated that Gall wrote these poems, and amassed others, whilst working as an agent for the Edinburgh Evening Courant. One poem (in Gall's hand) is addressed to himself: “Mr Gall, Courant Office”. The collection may then have become the possession of the publisher, Oliver Boyd, before being sold on further.A fascinating archive warranting further study and research.
Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - [one of 500 first edition, first impression hardcovers] London: Bloomsbury, 1997. First edition, first impression hardback with the number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 on the copyright page, ‘Philosopher’s' miss-spelled ‘Philospher's’ on the lower cover and ‘1 wand’ listed twice on page 53, original pictorial laminated boards [Errington A1(a)].An excellent copy of the work. A very bright and very well-maintained book with a tight text block which sits neatly and smartly on the shelf. No foxing, ink ownership inscriptions or turned-down corners. Any small condition issues are limited to some minor bumping to corners of covers and spine ends, with some slight bubbling and peeling to the laminate in a few discreet places; no fading to spine; some evidence of previous ownership on the front-free endpaper and the title-page removed via professional and sensitive restoration, achieved before the current owner acquired the book from Adrian Harrington’s Kensington Church Street shop over two decades ago. A neatly erased pencil inscription to front-free endpaper; a small red ink dot to upper edge; the usual light toning to margins which is found in almost every copy of the book; a very minor crease to the corner of pp.27-28 visible only in bright light; an additional later dust-jacket is provided for protection, which has contributed to the preservation of the volume. A vivid and lightly handled example with no marking to the text. Private American collection Few books have inspired the imaginations of a generation of children and adults like J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The boy wizard first appeared on bookshelves in 1997 and, nearly 30 years later, the fantasy of boarding the Hogwarts Express bound for magical adventures has not diminished. Alongside seven books and a host of offshoots, such as The Tales of Beedle the Bard, the franchise has expanded to encompass eight Harry Potter films, three Fantastic Beasts films, a sell-out stage play, three theme parks and a studio tour. As of 2016, the franchise as a whole was estimated to be worth $25 billion.Here we present a first edition, first impression copy of the first book in the series: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This is indicated by a number line reading 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 on the publisher’s imprint page, the publisher being listed as Bloomsbury, the error of ‘1 wand’ being listed twice in Harry’s school equipment list and ‘Philosopher’ being misspelt ‘Philospher’ on the lower cover. It is an exceptionally rare book to find in any condition, and one in the present quite collectable condition could well be called the jewel in any Harry Potter collector’s crown.During the summer of 1990, J.K. Rowling caught a train from Manchester to London and the methodical rattling of the carriage alongside some time to think worked their magic: Rowling formed the idea of Harry Potter there and then! She wrote the book in her spare time, famously: “…in snatched hours, in clattering cafes or in the dead of night.” Much of this writing took place in Edinburgh, which boasts sites reminiscent of the later books in the series, such as the gravestone of Thomas Riddell Esq. in Greyfriars Kirkyard, thought by many to be the inspiration behind the true name of the series’ antagonist, Lord Voldemort (or Tom Riddle). It is therefore fitting that this early and important piece of Harry Potter history will be sold in Edinburgh.There are many legends surrounding Harry Potter’s road to publication. For example, urban myth states that the manuscript had been rejected many times before Bloomsbury offered an advance to Rowling of £1500. However, by all accounts, when Bloomsbury did finally secure the manuscript, there was great excitement about the book’s potential. However, the publisher still proceeded with caution and issued only 500 copies of the first edition, first impression in hardback. Around 300 copies are said to have gone to libraries, were much read and are often found to be fairly tired if they have survived at all. A further 200 copies were retailed. Taking these numbers into account, it is evident that finding one of these books in good condition is rather unusual!The success of Harry Potter has been outstanding. The bibliographer, Philip W. Errington, writes: “Never before did a series start with 500 copies in hardback and conclude with a matching edition of over eight million copies.” The book for sale here represents the beginning of this incredible success story, offering somebody the opportunity to own one of the few original copies of the book that started it all.

Sun Yat-sen Kidnapped in London Being the Story of my Capture By, Detention at, and Release from the Chinese Legation, London. Bristol: J. Arrowsmith, c.1906. A single copy of the first edition is located in auction records, sold in 2022 with an autograph letter by Sun, with no other copy of the first or any other edition traced.Kidnapped in London was the work which brought Sun Yat-sen international fame, setting him on the path to leading the overthrow the Qing dynasty and becoming the first provisional president of the Republic of China. Having orchestrated a failed uprising in Guangzhou in 1895, Sun embarked on a 16-year period of exile, deciding to travel first to London. Shortly after his arrival he was kidnapped by Chinese officials and held at the Chinese embassy on Portland Place for twelve days. Word of his imprisonment quickly spread and popular sentiment in his favour was marshalled by Dr James Cantlie, who had been Sun's teacher at the Hong Kong College of Medicine.‘That Sunday 11th October morning in 1896, Sun Yat-sen was an obscure figure. By the time he was released form the embassy, 12 days later, he was a hero to the British press. His account of being Kidnapped in London, published within a few weeks, made him globally famous … By the time Sun left Britain, in June 1897, he was connected to an international network of supporters. The kidnapping had transformed an obscure troublemaker into a revolutionary figurehead. A sojourn in the imperial capital had filled his mind with ideas of progress, nationalism and socialism that would inspire his movement. Fifteen years later, that movement overthrew the Qing empire, appointed Sun “provisional president” of the Republic of China and helped to create modern Asia’ (Bill Hayton, ‘The London Kidnapping that Changed China’, New Statesman, 12th October 2021).

Not inspected outside frame. August Hermans (1875-1936) was a sculptor, artist and architect, who led the Roermond branch of Eduard Cuyper's architectural firm from ca. 1920 onwards. From this document it is apparent that Hermans enjoyed an education in the Cuyper's firm from 1893 to 1918 under the supervision of Pierre Cuypers.

The parents of the author were the famous Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739-1811) and his second wife Wichertje Wichers Kryuys (1755-1823). The artist and publisher J.C. Sepp was best known for his work Beschouwing der Wonderen Gods in de minstgeachtte schepselen (issued from 1762 onward). Very interesting visitation book, a register of domains of the Catholic Church (Minorites) in "Germania Inferioris". Some place names: Antwerp, Brussels, Boetendael, Roermond, Louvain, Malines and Ghent. Some names of priests: Guilielmus van Sichen, Jacobus de Riddere, Josephus van Dorne, Franciscus Maria Rhini a Politio, Guilielmus Herinx, Petrus Marchant, Cosmas Meermans, Cornelis de Vroom, Conradus Graven, Reinerus Paijes, Petrus Marinus Sormarius, Marcus Zarzosa, Bonaventura Poëry, Franciscus Sanguessa, Matthaus a Pareta and Benjamin Elbel. A few lvs have been cut out. Provenance: contemp. or sl. later owner's entry "Suster dircjen Leyden" (?) and "19th cent. owner's entry "E.F. Langhen, souvenir à monsieur J.V. Everts". W. annotation verso of the third leaf: "Ex libris W.C.H. Machen, Warmond, no. 671" (William Charlemagne Henri Machen, 1860-1835). Also w. 2 identical bookplates of the Provinciebestuur van Overijssel. Interesting and attractive 17th cent. heraldic manuscript, the first few pages containing the arms of "Nassouw van Oranje stadhouder van Gelderlandt", followed by a double-p. genealogical tree containing the coats of arms and the names of a.o. Nassau, Stolberg, Saxen, Hessen, Mecklenburg and Mansvelt. Also at the beginning are a series of coats of arms of cities, provinces and countries, w. names in pen such as Valentia, Granada, Catalonien, Dalmatien, Napels, Schotlant, China, Tartarien, Constantionopolen, Egypten, Croacia, Zeelant and Utrecht. Most of the other coats of arms have as captions the names of various noble families. Binding sl. weak along hinges, spine and outer corners rubbed, the first leaf w. sl. dam. margins (repaired), fingersoiled/ a bit browned/ stained throughout.

Contemp. leather w. gilt centerpiece and border. Folio. A few pages loosely inserted. Back cover and flap detached, first few pages w. heavy signs of use, occas. waterst. Still a beautiful, rare exemplar of this work, a compilation and commentary on astronomy, mathematics, philosophy and Islamic mysticism (among other topics).

Some staining, but in good condition. The manuscript is kept in a modern Japanese-style cloth folder. The final page cut out but present, with some contemp. annotations in pen listing 5 'Bloedverwanten van den Bruidegom', members of the noble Van Wassenaar and Van Balveren families. On the back wr. the annotation in pencil: 'Cadet Van Wassenaar. Ziekenzaal 2'. Important and extensive original source on the history of Japan, as seen from a Christian perspective and from the perspective of wanting to expand commercial trade with Japan. The posthumously published version (in Algemeen Letterlievend Maandschrift, vol. 49, 1849), was edited and shortened compared w. our manuscript. Cf. Pagès/ Wenckstern, A bibliography of the Japanese empire, Vol. I, 1895, p. 95 (the published version). The learned Verkerk Pistorius lived at Decima from 1823 to 1833, had access to official archives there and he worked together with Von Siebold.

Made in France, late 13th or early 14th century, vellum, approx. 40.5 x 27.2 cm, 2 columns w. 50 lines, w. fine col. pen work border ornaments and initials heightened w. gold. Tape remnants in upper blank margin from former frame and a few tiny wormholes in upper blank corner. Both in fine condition. Otto F. Ege (1888-1951) was a teacher, lecturer, bookseller and famous "biblio-clast". He is best known for his 40 unique compilation boxes, each w. different leaves from the same 50 illuminated medieval manuscripts. The boxes all included a leaf taken from the book that our leaves were also was taken from, and in these 40 boxes, they were positioned as number 14, hence the name Otto Ege Manuscript 14. The present leaves almost certainly do not come from one of those boxes, but are most likely other loose leaves resulting from the destruction of the original book. (total 2)

Manuscript diploma of nobility on 2 vellum bifolia, 5 pages of neat calligraphic text (4 pages w. engr. borders), dated Vienna, 12 March 1794 in the 1st part, Brussels, 14 June 1794 in the 2nd part and Brussels, 21 June 1774 in the 3rd part. Signed "François" in pen by Holy Roman Emperor Francis II (1768-1835), also w. the signatures in pen of A.G. de Lederer, C. Beydaels de Zittaert and 7 others. Bound in orig. red velvet w. 2 (of 4) silk binding ribbons preserved, 35 x 24 cm. Lacks 2 ties, some inevitable signs of age wear to the velvet. With this document, Van Velde was officially made a baron. Shortly before this he had been appointed chancellor of the Duchy of Brabant in August 1793 and took the oath in January 1794, but was never actually employed because of resistance against his appointment.

The vellum bifolium holds a paper bifolium w. a very fine full-p. drawing of the tombstone in ink and blue watercolour on the first page. Short introductory text followed by a careful description of all the other names and dates (the oldest being 1625) and the coats of arms in relief on the tombstone. See C.F.X. Interesting document, proving that the lower half of the stone was turned around at a certain moment, w. the original text erased and newly engraved.
