SEABORG GLENN T.: (1912-1999) American chemist. Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, 1951. Autograph statement signed, Glenn T. Seaborg, one page, 4to, Berkeley, California, 25th April 1952. Seaborg's statement is made in response to a researcher's question, entitled World Scientific Inquiry, their manuscript question at the head of the page stating, in part, 'In a brilliant article entitled “An Epoch in Science”, which appeared in the magazine “Science et Vie”, Jules Romains writes: The exploration of the physical universe has no assignable limits; but it seems likely, however, that discoveries of the first order of magnitude…..will be limited in number. The future will rather have to content itself with prodigious achievements of secondary importance…..Pure science has already unlocked the most important secrets of the universe…..Is Jules Romains right? What is your opinion, from a chemical point of view?'. Seaborg's statement appears beneath and states, in full, 'I do not agree with Mr. Romains. I believe that discoveries of the first magnitude in chemistry lie ahead of us', adding his signature, place and date below. After to have received the Nobel Prize, what thankfulness have you had for the illustrious founder of this prize? - For Alfred Nobel who had the imagination to conceive the idea of a Prize of this nature? 2. With a great pecuniary contentment, what moral satisfaction have you had?'. Hinshelwood's typed statement in response appears below and states, in full, 'The generous and far sighted provision of Alfred Nobel has set the standard for scientific achievement throughout the world and the honour which his name confers is an inspiration to all who work in science. Naturally this is felt and appreciated with gratitude by all those who have been fortunate enough to become Nobel Laureates. As to the ultimate satisfaction derived from the pursuit of science, this should lie in the work itself'. One very small, minor area of paper loss to the left edge, otherwise VG

Einstein signs his scientific equations, noting that they are ‘From the graveyard of buried hopes’ EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. A very fine, rare Autograph Manuscript Signed, Albert Einstein, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. The working manuscript, penned in bold, dark fountain pen ink, features over ten lines of scientific equations and calculations in his hand, with just one line of German text. Signed by Einstein with his full signature at the foot of the page, adding a line of text in his hand, in German, immediately beneath, 'Aus dem Friedhofe begrabener Hoffnungen' (Translation: 'From the graveyard of buried hopes'). T.L.S., Elsa Einstein, one page, 8vo, Bayard Lane, Princeton, 20th October 1933, to a lady ('Chere madame'), most probably Juliette Adant, wife of Professor Arthur de Groodt, on the printed stationery of the Peacock Inn, in French. It is with great pleasure that I return the small, signed sheets to you. My husband thanks you for the kind lines you wrote to him') and adds that they have only been in America for a few days, observing 'Princeton est une  petite Universite d'une grande charme en style anglais, une vraie copie d'Oxford. We are still in a hotel, but in a short time we will move into a house, which is exceedingly beautifully located in the middle of large gardens and with a splendid view. We have rented this house for half a year. We want to lead a mostly calm life here and very far from publicity. The professor wants nothing but to do his scientific work'), further thanking her correspondent for all of their kindness, and also for offering to keep a trunk and small suitcase in their home until they return next year, 'Je vous remercie de tout mon coeur pour cette faveur. I thank you with all of my heart for this favour. The trunk contains things which are of great importance to me'). Whilst Einstein clearly created many such pages of scientific formulae during his career, they remain highly sought after by collectors, and signed examples are of exceptional rarity. Furthermore, the present example is greatly enhanced by both Einstein's handwritten observation (reflecting on the possibility of what he wished to have achieved with his calculations) and the fine accompanying letter of provenance from Elsa Einstein. Some very light, minor creasing to the page of calculations and a couple of very small, neat tears to the edges, one only very slightly affecting one small part of an equation. VG, 2Juliette De Groodt-Adant (1892-1964) Belgian writer, wife of the Flemish doctor Arthur de Groodt (1883-1952).  In March 1933 Albert and Elsa Einstein returned to Europe from America and learned that Hitler had seized power and that the Gestapo had raided their Berlin apartment, confiscating many possessions. Landing in Antwerp, Belgium, Albert Einstein immediately visited the German consulate and surrendered his passport, formally renouncing his German citizenship. At the invitation of Arthur de Groodt and his wife (who counted Rabindranath Tagore amongst their friends) Albert and Elsa Einstein stayed for a few days at Cantecroy Castle before Juliette De Groodt-Adant suggested that they hire two cottages in De Haan, the Villa Savoyarde for the Einsteins and the Maisonette for themselves. The Einstein's stayed in the West Flanders municipality for six months before departing for London in September 1933.  On 3rd October 1933, Einstein delivered a speech on the importance of academic freedom before a packed audience at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Four days later he returned to America with his wife and took up a position at the Institute for Advanced Study, noted for having become a refuge for scientists fleeing Nazi Germany. Einstein's association with the Institute at Princeton University would last until his death in 1955.

‘I desire them as much good as they wanted to do me harm’FOUCHE JOSEPH: (1759-1820) 1st Duc d'Otrante, 1st Comte Fouche. French statesman and revolutionary who served as Minister of Police (1799-1810, 1815) under Napoleon Bonaparte. A good manuscript draft of an autograph letter, signed with his initials, JF, two pages, 8vo, Prague, 25th October n.y. (1816), to the Princess of Vaudemont. Fouche writes, in part, 'Do not pity me for being in Prague, we are quiet here and I have enough fortitude to remain here motionless. Sacrifices that are imposed on me, it is no doubt a very great one, to be separated from a few true friends, but I find it pleasant enough to be freed from the sight of a crowd of people who cannot inspire only feelings of disgust. I desire them as much good as they wanted to do me harm; events will only avenge me too much for their injustices….If I were permitted to speak to you of political affairs I would tell you my whole thoughts on the measure that dissolved the Chamber. I know France, it is quite indifferent today to the form of its government. As long as it believes in its stability it cannot exist without justice, without good faith, what has been done to reconcile opinions and to unite interests around the throne? It is only blind people who collide at the whim of fate and who trample under foot the corpse of the fatherland. I congratulate myself on having satisfied your wishes by the explanation I gave you. I cannot yet publish my memoirs, it would be necessary to resolve to deletions which I do not want to make. I prefer esteem to favour moreover, I have the project of dedicating them to the King, that is to tell you in what spirit they are written. Farewell, preserve your health and hope since hope is not yet prescribed. However, I think much more of the ills of France than of my personal privations. I am in no hurry to return there, I have suffered so much there that I fear my own impressions…..' The Duke of Wellington described the events to Samuel Rogers such -  'De Lancey was with me and speaking to me when he was struck. We were on a point of land that overlooked the plain. I had just been warned off by some soldiers (but as I saw well from it, and two divisions were engaging below, I said "Never mind"), when a ball came bounding along en ricochet, as it is called, and, striking him on the back, sent him many yards over the head of his horse. He fell on his face, and bounded upwards and fell again. All the staff dismounted and ran to him, and when I came up he said, "Pray tell them to leave me and let me die in peace." I had him conveyed to the rear, and two days after, on my return from Brussels, I saw him in a barn, and he spoke with such strength that I said (for I had reported him killed), "Why! De Lancey, you will have the advantage of Sir Condy in 'Castle Rackrent'--you will know what your friends said of you after you were dead." "I hope I shall," he replied. Poor fellow! We knew each other ever since we were boys. But I had no time to be sorry. I went on with the army, and never saw him again' (from The Recollections of Samuel Rogers, 1856) One of De Lancey's two sisters, Susan, married Sir Hudson Lowe in December 1815.

I first came to Switzerland in 1903…..the object of that first visit was to learn French, but I also had my first lessons in winter sports……Since that time I have paid many visits to Switzerland and have become very fond of it; yours is a magnificent country, and one which produces a virile people of great character. Swiss history tells us of your long struggle for freedom; your early history especially is a long story of wars against aggression from outside. I have been reading how the Swiss Army defeated the Austrians at Morgarten in 1315 and at Sempach in 1386; I have also read how in the war against Germany in 1499 your Army defeated the German Army under Maximilian I at Dornach, which victory gained you your definite independence of the German Reich. In these and other wars your Swiss soldiers gained a high reputation for military skill and valour. So great were the military qualities of your young men that, even when the independence of the country had been won, they used to enlist in the armies of foreign powers and brought your country great glory on many battlefields. However, the Swiss Government finally decided that the hiring of Swiss fighting men by foreign powers was likely to endanger the home country and must cease. Since then Switzerland has enjoyed peace, and has observed a strict neutrality in the case of wars between two or more of her neighbours…..In your early days you suffered greatly from foreign aggression, and there are probably few nations who understand better than you do the distress that has been brought about in many European countries as a result of the late war……As a British soldier, I thank you for the splendid way in which you looked after our officers and men who escaped to your country from prisoner-of-war camps in enemy countries…..Many nations that have been drawn into war have gained much benefit from the neutrality of Switzerland…..Our two nations would seem to have much in common. We British are an independent and an individual people; our long freedom from oppression has made us self-reliant and our one passionate belief is in the liberty of the individual to go his own way……All nations today are grappling with the problem of how to reconcile this liberty of the individual with the demands of collective good. In Switzerland you seem to have reached a satisfactory solution to that problem and one which suits the nation…..To Switzerland and its people, I wish prosperity and happiness in the years that lie ahead'. Two small file holes to the upper left corner of each page and with some light overall age wear, about VG

Evrardus de Valle Scholarum Sermones de sanctis. Heidelberg, [Drucker des Lindelbach, wohl Heinrich Knoblochtzer], 21. Januar 1485. Folio. 31 : 20,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit zahlreichen eingemalten Lombarden in Rot. - KOLLATION: 281 (st. 286) nn. Bll. Got. Type. 2 Spalten. 44-46 Zeilen. - PROVENIENZ: Titel mit mehreren hs. Besitzvermerken des 16.-18. Jhs. LITERATUR: GW 9489/20. - Hain/Cop. 9009. - Goff H 513. - BMC III, 666. - BSB E-134. - Geldner I, 265. The first book printed in Heidelberg. Anonymously printed by the so-called Printer of Lindelbach, which is attributed by recent bibliographies to Heinrich Knoblochtzer. Rare first edition of these sermons on the lives of the saints. In 14th and 15th century the collection circulated widely in manuscript and was commonly, as here, attributed to the Dominican Hugo de Prato Florido. On the evidence of the manuscript tradition, the author is known to have been Ervrardus de Valle Scholarum (died ca. 1272), a French Augustinian and a famous preacher at his time. Contemp. pigskin over wooden boards, richly blindstamped and with single stamps Agnus dei etc. 281 (of 286) nn. leaves. Lacking 4 consecutive text leaves (replaced by facsimile) and the last blank. - Waterstaining and some soiling (mostly affecting margines), here and there marginal defects, few old marginalia, title with several ownership inscriptions by 16th to 18th cent. hands. Binding stained and rubbed, edges partly with defects to covering, spine ends chipped, clasps removed. Dieses Objekt wird regel- oder differenzbesteuert angeboten.

Macer Floridus Die Heilkraft der Kräuter De virtutibus herbarum et qualitatibus speciebus noviter inventus ac impressus. Venedig, Bernardino dei Vitali, 10. Juni 1508. 4to. 21,5 : 14 cm. - KOLLATION: 48 nn. Bll. Koran Illuminated Qur'an from Indonesia Arabisches Manuskript auf Papier. Indonesien (Aceh), 19. Jahrhundert. * South America. A group of 19 ethnographic studio portraits of indigenous people of (?)Guyana, c. 1870, each photograph depicting between 1 and 5 men and women, red ruled borders, rounded corners, red ink stamp of 'Wellcome & Anderson, Photographers' to versos and 4 with printed label for 'J.R. Anderson, Photographer' overlaid, together with 3 other similar portraits of indigenous family groups, one seemingly an outdoor setting, all with plain mounts and straight corners, all 3 inscribed in a contemporary hand to versos, 'Bucks or Red-Indians, BC'QTY: (22)NOTE:Very little is known about the firm of Wellcome & Anderson, but they seem to have been based at Georgetown, Demerara [Guyana] in the 1860s. B. Wellcome died in Barbados on 1 January 1875. The three with manuscript inscriptions to versos may suggest these were taken in British Columbia. Canada, but the very scanty clothing attire on most of the people in these photographs is similar to the 'Guyanan' ones and not the buckskins and so forth that one would usually associate with indigenous people of western Canada.
