Luís António Verney (1713-1792), son of French parents, but born in Lisbon, maximum exponent of the Enlightenment in Portugal and one of the most famous Portuguese "foreigners", studied at Santo Antão College in Lisbon and at the Congregation of the Oratory, before getting a degree in Theology at the University of Évora. Ownership manuscript of the time, on the title page: Coll: Anglor: Ulyssip: — Preston. Small marginal cut in the last 10 sheets. Otherwise, in a very clean copy with large margins, preserving the rare portrait of the author with the subscription Nolly Pinx-Sc. (Ernesto Soares, História, 1368). Remarkable binding of the period, in “vieux rouge” shagreen, slightly worn and with a slightly dehydrated spine; covers with elaborate loose tooling lace (dentelle), with the coat of arms of Portugal, gold-engraved in the reserve of the central finial; the endpapers are preserved in marbled paper, probably from the 19th century. Cadell, 1773.- [22], lxxii, 196 p.; 21 cm.- E., William Jones (1746-1794), English philologist, born in London, known for his work on the relations between European and Indo-Aryan languages, which he defined as Indo-European; Among his vast bibliography, Jones also left us a renowned grammar of the Persian language, published in 1771. Very clean copy (probably washed), with a small marginal tear on the C8 sheet, without lack of support. Good full morocco binding, probably from the 19th century, with gold decoration (dentelle) on the covers, closed panels on the spine, rolls on the squares and thickness of the folders and gilt edges. It keeps the endpapers in marbled paper.

An important collection of texts published in Louvain shortly after the siege of this city, in which the author was involved, having been taken prisoner by the French army. The edition, without pagination, includes some of the texts that would lead the humanist to be arrested by the Inquisition in 1571. Ownership manuscript on the title page: “Letellier conseiller au grand conseil du roy”. This is most likely Michel Le Tellier (1603-1685) who was successively adviser to the Grand Conseil, procurator of the king in Châtelet (Paris), maître de requettes, intendant in Piedmont, secretary of state for war and chancellor-general of Louis XIV (1677). Complete copy (possibly missing the last blank page), with some old handwritten annotations (by Le Tellier?), but in general clean and with good margins. Document consisting of 34 sheets of parchment, the first being blank and the following foliated on the front, from 1 to 33. Folios 1 to 4, with blank versos, include: 1 - Architectural frontispiece with the following title: Epitome da Nobilissima ascendencia de Manoel Cardoso de Loureiro Capitão Mor de Viseu, cauº da ord. d’Xpº e senhor dos Morg [ado]ºs d[e] Vª meãa, Tondelinha, Patameira, e dos quintos dos Lugares de Ferro centi, & Povoa de Modrinhoza & Pouves. On the lower cartouche: A MCDXIII (?); 2 - Armas of Manoel Cardoso de Loureyro & Figgueyred[o] de Lacerda; 3 - Family tree of the holder; 4 - Armas de Moreiras do Perangal. Following are the genealogical descriptions of the following families: Moreiras, Seixas & Barros, Figueiredos Loureiros, Cardosos, Amarais, Coutos, Azevedos, Pimenteis, Abreus, Barbosas e Marinhos, all. On the front of folio 33, a closing term, dated Coimbra, Coimbra 19, 1731, José Gomes Annes Amaro de Azambuja. On the verso, four visas, two with notary signs. In addition to the first four pages, the manuscript includes: a decorated strip, bordered on f. 5; about 40 large initials illuminated in red, blue and gold (±54x43 mm) and another 40 smaller ones (3 lines); 10 large coats of arms, one at the beginning of each of the texts about the different families (except the first) . Restorations and patches on parchment, on the lower outer corner of all leaves from folio 9 to the end; frontispiece with signs of wear; slight trimming, with tangential damage to some annotations on the margin; first sheet (blank) with fungal stains. Ex-libris of António Capucho. Bound in blue velvet, probably not contemporary, with the spine remade in sheepskin; covers with silver application with rocaille motifs: four corners, an image of the Virgin (top cover) and the insignia of the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela(?); keeps both clasps intact. Green screen protective case. (PRIOR GENERAL CHARLES) (1807-1881), Indian Army. Detailed manuscript journal, c.1841-1847. Oblong quarto, closely written, c.140pp, some damp stng. but still legible. Early 1841, Prior & family moved to Landour with a hunting trip for several months in the foothills of the Himalayas. 2nd August his regiment was ordered to Kabul & his wife went to stay with her father (poss. in Delhi). Prior joined his regiment & was in Peshawar on 24th December 1841, then Major in the 64th Native Infantry. January 1842 through the Khyber Pass to relieve Ali Musjid. 5th April 1842 he was in Pollock's attack on the Khyber. 14th April Jelalabad but then back to Ali Musjid. In June he left camp with Lawrence (Henry Lawrence?) for Peshawar on route for Mussoorie. Had health issues & remained in Mussoorie til c.May 1844. Later travelled to Ferozopore then sailed down Sutlej & Indus to join his regiment at Sukkur where the forces were under the overall command of Sir Charles Napier. Active service early 1845 then to Cawnpore. Various gaps in the diary but by early 1847 he was at Barrackpore then Sangar & on to his regiment.
