Medicine.- Lee (Samuel) A Narrative of some Proceedings in the Management of Chelsea Hospital, as far as relates to the Appointment and Dismission..., first edition, woodcut ornaments and initials, light spotting, modern marbled boards, [Not in Wellcome], W.Owen, 1753 § Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Report on Examination of Medical Practitioners, only edition, with manuscript leaf by F.H.Davidson President of the Royal College tipped in facing title, ex-library copy with ink stamp to verso, modern cloth-backed boards, uncut, [Not in Wellcome], Edinburgh, 1833 § Roux (Philibert Joseph) A Narrative of a Journey to London, in 1814; or, a Parallel of the English and French Surgery; preceded by some Observations on the London Hospitals, first edition in English, lacking half-title, ex-library copy with old ink stamp to verso of title and label, contemporary half calf, rebacked, [Wellcome IV.568], 1816 § Cleland (Henry Wilson) On the History and Properties Chemical and Medical of Tobacco...presented to the Faculty of Physicians & Surgeons Glasgow, first edition, lithographed title, dedication, plate from de Bry with accompanying quotation, the last two on india paper and mounted all a little foxed, handsome contemporary green morocco with elaborate gilt border, spine gilt, g.e., glazed endpapers with lattice in green & gold, gilt turn-ins, a little rubbed at edges, [Arents 1424; Wellcome II.357], Glasgow, 1840; and 2 others on medicine and hospitals, 8vo & 4to (6)⁂ The first item is an account of the controversial dismissal of Samuel Lee, a surgeon who claimed great success in the treatment of ruptures. Lee was judged a quack by his colleagues at Chelsea Hospital, most notably William Cheselden, widely regarded as one of the greatest surgeons of his day, who refused to acknowledge the efficacy of Lee's procedures, for which he was receiving large amounts of government money. This pamphlet was published in Lee's defence, and it seems probable that he wrote it himself. Though one-sided, it provides a good view of the workings of hospital administration in the mid-18th century. The second is a comprehensive review of the management and governance of the Royal College together with considerable detail on the fee structure, examinations and awards, and its relationship with the other medical professions (i.e. surgeons and apothecaries).

Levant.- Case (The) of the Governor and Company of Merchants of England Trading to the Levant Seas, 4pp., [?1753] bound with Historical View (An) of the Conduct and Proceedings of the Turky Company,12pp., [1753] and Bill (A) for Enlarging and Regulating the Trade into the Levant Seas, 8pp., issue with "prenticeships" to p.1., [1740], together 3 works in 1 vol., all with drop-head titles to first leaves and docket titles to last, the second with contemporary manuscript note "2d Reading of the Turkey Bill is Tuesday the 13.th March", modern cloth, folio, n.p.⁂ In the first item the Levant (or Turkey) Company is responding to the proposed legislation then before Parliament and which was enacted in 1754 as An Act for enlarging and regulating the trade into the Levant seas. The Levant Company "had never been an exclusive or oppressive monopoly such as the East India or Greenland Company was, but on the contrary was based on the assertion of the inestimable liberty of trade. Every merchant who could pay the required entrance fee was of right admitted a member, and was then entitled to trade on his own account". [Palgrave III, p.595]. The 1754 Act opened up the trade even further, all English merchants paying £20 for admission to its rights and privileges.

Portugal.- Trade.- Pombal (Sebastiao José de, Marquis de) Estatutos dos Mercadores de Retalho, ?first edition, old ink manuscript numbers to head of title, modern marbled boards, 1757 § Instituiçaõ da Companhia Geral de Pernambuco, e Paraíba, first edition, title soiled and stained with some wear to a couple of letters and tear to head affecting first line (repaired), worming, mostly marginal but with slight loss to two lines of last few leaves, rebound using 18th century vellum French legal document with dates and signatures in manuscript, spine titled in ink, rubbed and soiled, spine ends wormed, [Borba de Moraes p.353; Kress 5786], 1759, both titles with large woodcut arms of King Joseph I and woodcut initials, Lisbon, Miguel Rodrigues, folio (2)⁂ The first is an interesting example of the economic reforms put in place by the Marquis de Pombal, in this case codifying national regulations affecting the retail trade, shopkeepers and merchants. Pombal, secretary of state for internal affairs, and de facto Prime Minister of Portugal from 1750 to 1777, is noted for his swift and competent leadership in the aftermath of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. He implemented sweeping economic policies in Portugal to regulate commercial activity and standardize quality throughout the country. The present rules of engagement for the retail trade were part of that reform. The second item was an inaugural address to Joseph I, King of Portugal, announcing the establishment by the Pombal government of the Company of Pernambuco and Paraiba, with information on the commerce of Brazil prior to the Company's existence.

The second relates to Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753, or An Act for the Better Preventing of Clandestine Marriage, which was the first statutory legislation in England and Wales to require a formal ceremony of marriage. Until that time neither prior notice nor parental consent for minors was required for marriage but the Act ordered the reading of banns in church, parents' or guardians' consent for minors, and the service to be conducted by an Anglican clergyman. Henceforth couples had to travel to Scotland in order to marry, the nearest place being Gretna Green just north of Carlisle. The third celebrates the marriage of David Murray, 2nd Earl of Mansfield (1727-1796), to Louisa Cathcart, some thirty years his junior. Murray, known as Viscount of Stormont, was ambassador to Vienna and then to France in the early years of the American Revolutionary War, and played a role in sending news of American actions back to England. This was Murray's second marriage, ten years after the death of his first wife. We have been unable to trace the first edition and ESTC locates only 4 UK copies of this second edition (E. A. Hornel Art Gallery & Library, Edinburgh University, National Library of Scotland, and St. Andrew's University) plus one in America. The fourth concerns a society scandal revolving around a suitor for the daughter of the novelist Mrs. Gunning, including rival suitors, forged letters and various intrigues. The final item relates to the affair between the Duke of Cumberland, younger brother of George III, and Henrietta, Lady Grosvenor.
