Douai printing.- [Lechmere (Edmund)] A Disputation of the Church, Wherein the old Religion is maintained, first edition, title with woodcut printer's device, woodcut head- & tail-pieces and decorative initials, title with traces of old ink inscription and lightly water-stained, a few side-notes shaved, one or two marginal tears or defects, later vellum, spine titled in manuscript, a little soiled, [STC 15348], Douai, Mark Wyon, at the golden Phaenix, 1629.*** Rare recusant treatise. Lechmere (d.1640) was a Worcestershire-born Catholic divine, who was educated at the English College in Douai under Dr. Matthew Kellison. He went on to teach divinity there after a spell of study in Paris under Gamache.ESTC lists copies at BL, Cambridge, Downside, Lambeth Palace, NLS, Bodleian, Society of Jesus Library, and Trinity College. No copies located outside the UK and we have been unable to trace any at auction.

His sale included the "Towneley Homer", the famous 11th century Greek manuscript on vellum which was bought by Charles Burney for £620 and is now in the British Library, and the "Towneley Mysteries" 15th century manuscript now in the Huntington Library in America.The Banks catalogue is part of one of the most complete libraries of natural history books of the time, effectively serving as a bibliography of such works up to that date. It was compiled by Banks's librarian and curator of his collections, the Swedish botanist Jonas Dryander (1748-1810), who had been a student of Linnaeus and later became librarian of the Royal Society and the first librarian and vice president of the Linnean Society.Ralph Willett owned a fine collection of natural history drawings, many by Ehret, which were included in this sale.

They were in an enormous chicken shed 40-50' long beside a caravan site near Duxford. You opened the door & the books stretched away into the distance. We had to go on Saturday since neither of our firms thought it was worthwhile. The wall of books contained so many no hopers - out of date AA books, microwave cookery - that it was no wonder noone would take it on. However we got stacks out onto trestles in the sunshine - and found a Phillipps manuscript - we were in business."

A later pencil manuscript note in vol.1 reads: "fine large copy, perf[ect] throughout, £13.0.0. Merly binding. The identical copy which sold for £20.7.0. at Willetts' (the Merly) Sale. Sir Mark Sykes' copy sold only for £17.0.0. It was very indifferent".

MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL: PARIS & STRASBOURG, 1867: a lively and extensive manuscript journal penned by Victor Yorke RA, an officer employed by the British government on a tour of military inspection in France & Germany during summer of 1867: covers period July 5th-August 24th, approx 180pp of entries in ink in a lively and legible hand, illustrated with some 41 albumen-print photographs (mainly cdv & cabinet-card size), plus a number of ink and pencil sketches, largely describing the writer's time in Paris and Strasbourg with much social, historical and military detail: contained in period commonplace book of half-morocco over marbled boards, a little rubbed but generally in very good condition, 7 ALS over approx 40 sides from same writer to his parents, loosely inserted. Liddell lived at Christ Church College at the University of Oxford, where her father was the Dean and Caroll was a maths tutor. Liddell was gifted the first 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' manuscript. The mirror that inspired Caroll's sequel once hung in a house in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. The frame with signs of wear consistent with age and use. Tape or paper attached to the verso. Please note that we have not removed this from its frame to examine.
