Gunilda (1897); two notebooks dating 1900-1904 connected to Thornycroft; assorted pre-War sales brochures for Thornycroft; Dixon & Halliday etc.; copies of yachting publications reviewing their products; a quantity of material pertaining to Iris and HH`s single-handed voyage from Southampton to Gravesend in 1905; several manuscript blue prints and some pinned loose notes made for various small craft approx. 1900-1940; a copy book for a number of craft dating from 1954-56; company deeds and documents; client correspondence; relevant magazines and papers containing news and reviews of the company or its personnel etc; and a quantity of papers and photographs concerning the early history of Little Ship Club, London of which HH was a founder member and lecturer, (a lot - sold not subject to return)Property from the estate of the late Dennis Halliday, Edmund Walter Higley Halliday (1875-1962), born in Reading, Berkshire, was a recognised naval architect and marine motor engineer with a prolific career that spans from 1902 until the early 1950s. He was one of the founder members of the Little Ship Club and was actively involved in providing shore based training in the late 1920s and 1930s to members of the Royal Naval Volunteer Supplementary Reserve during The Second World War. He started his career at the famous Thornycroft ship building works in Church Warf, Chiswick, with the design of the firm`s 40 ft. 1904 motorboat Champak and only one year later entered into partnership with Geale Dickson trading as "Dickson & Halliday Naval Architects & Marine Motor Engineers" in Southampton. In April 1905 he designed and built the Iris for Messrs Perman & Co Ltd. and accepted a wager to run it single handed and non-stop from Southampton to London Bridge, an adventure which was extensively reported in the national press. During these years Dickson & Halliday enjoyed some success at a competitive level. The partnership dissolved in 1907 with Halliday returning to Chiswick and trading from 1909 as "Higley Halliday, Naval Architect & Marine Motor Engineer" where he developed a close working relationship with Frank Maynard who built many of his designs. During the First World War he designed cane and canvas collapsible boats for the War Office, but it was in the 1920s when he resumed his association with Maynard that marked the peak of his career with a variety of designs including harbour launches with fitted petrol/paraffin motors of between 20ft. and 30 ft; experimental steam patrol launches, air-propelled hydroplanes (1925), hydraulic propelled launch (1923) and tug (1923) and an electric launch (1924). By the late `20s and early `30s he was focusing much more on his role as teacher and consultant. A founder-member of the Little Ship Club, he was appointed honorary instructor in seamanship in 1929, where his cheery personality and his aptitude for dealing thoroughly and in an easily understood manner with any branch of the subject led him to lecturing to sometimes up to 120 people - including a strong female following, whilst his interest in motor boats, made him very popular among the younger members of the Club. During this same period, his designs also shifted from bespoke to smaller standardised motor yachts, becoming a popular and affordable option for the mass market and included "Nanona" (1927), "Maralia" (1927), "Sport" (1928) and "Spray" (1930). Kept busy during World War II, his motor yachts Karen II and Bendor were requisitioned as `Little Ships` in Operation Dynamo, Halliday became a central figure as an instructor to the amateur yachtsmen who formed the Royal Naval Volunteer Supplementary Reserve (subsequently the London Flotilla) at the Little Ship Club. He was appointed Lieutenant and a "Four Striper" in the R.N.V.R. Sea Cadet Corps and club members presented him with an onyx cigarette box by way of thanks for his services to the club (see lot 230). After the war he retired from an active role although he remained a member of the Thames Ship-lover`s Society and The World Ship Society. He died on 27 December 1962 aged 87.

Frazer, Sir James George (arranged and edited by Robert Angus Downie) The Native Races of Africa and Madagascar Frazer was 36 when he wrote `The Golden Bough` (variously referred to as `A Study in Comparative Religion` or `A Study in Magic and Religion`), which was said have influenced the work of writers as different as Jung, the Swiss philosopher; T S Eliot, the English/American poet; and James Joyce, the Irish writer. However, it was not until 47 years later, when he was 83, that Frazer decided to publish selections from his forty or so thick quarto notebooks on the anthropological writings of others. A year later, in 1938, `The Native Races of Africa and Madagascar` was published as the first of the series - `Anthologia Anthropologica`. The result was `A Copious Selection of Passages for the Study of Social Anthropology from the Manuscript Notebooks of [J G Frazer] Arranged and Edited from the MSS by Robert Angus Downie`. In his own introduction, Downie describes how he went about his work (see also one of the images), sorting, arranging and copying the extracts according to continent (Africa first), and then region and race. Frazer lived to see the full series published - after Africa, Australia, followed by Asia and Europe, and, finally, America, with the last three all published 1939 - all under Downie`s editorship and in a uniform edition from the same publisher. [A reasonable set of the four first edition volumes is quoted on the internet at about $750.] The current book reproduces 234 extracts, some very long and some much shorter, and mainly, but not only, in English. The book is substantial: xiv + 571 pp of double-column text and index + frontispiece + one of Frazer`s manuscript pages in facsimile + seven maps showing the languages, races and tribes of Africa and Madagascar. The book is also comprehensive: it deals with Bushmen, Hottentots and a dozen other races in Southern Africa, and almost another one hundred races in the rest of the continent. Full references to the sources of the extracts are given at the end of each entry. The dustjacket of our copy (few of the available copies have dustjackets, in any condition) has been repaired and is now Good. The original turquoise cloth-boards, gilt to the spine, are marred only by two small nicks at the head of the spine and an early sign of shelf-wear at the foot of the spine. The plain endpapers are Fine: there is a small green sticker of a Pretoria bookseller on the front paste-down and an owner`s signature and date on the front free endpaper.(*) The text and illustrations are all present, unmarked and unfoxed or otherwise discoloured. The page edges are uniformly sunned. In other words, the overall description `Very Good` is conservative. (*)The first owner, and the only one with his name in the book, was `D Ziervogel, UP, 28-8-1940`. Ziervogel bought the book when he was an M A student at the University of Pretoria. He went on to become one of South Africa`s leading writers on anthropology.   Condition: Very Good Publisher Place: London Publisher: Percy Lund Humphries Publication Date: 1938 Size: 375 x 220 x 60; weight 1.7 kg Reserve: $75 Click here to view further details and to bid

Signed by Bernard Hart, one of the original signers of the Buttonwood Agreement. VF-EF. The text reads as follows:"On the twenty sixth day of Dec. Inst I promise to receive from Daniel C. Verplank Esq or order Thirty Subscriptions to the Bank of the United States & to Pay him or order at the rate of one hundred & thirty five Dollars per Subscrip New York Dec. 9th 1791." Signed Bernard Hart.Bernard Hart (1764-1855): There were five Jews among the signers of the Buttonwood Agreement - Benjamin Seixas, Ephraim Hart, Bernard Hart, Isaac M. Gomez, and Alexander Zuntz, a Hessian soldier who had worked for the British during the American Revolution.Bernard Hart came to New York from Bavaria in 1780. He became a successful businessman, an active member of the Jewish Synagogue, a member of the Black Friar's Society, the House of Lords, and the St. George's Society. Hart was a partner in the firm of Lispenard & Hart. He married Zipporah Seixas, the daughter of one of the other Jewish signers of the Buttonwood Agreement, Benjamin Seixas.Bank of United States "Scrips" (Subscriptions)In December 1790 Alexander Hamilton asked Congress to incorporate a Bank of the United States. One quarter of the subscription price was to be paid in gold or silver coins, bullion, or plate. The remainder was to be payable in U.S. debt securities obtained by trading old debt for new debt.In early 1791, both houses of Congress passed the Bank bill. After a great deal of debate on the constitutionality of the bill, George Washington signed it in late February. The intial public offering for Bank of the US "scrips" took place on July 4, 1791. Investors paid $25 in specie (gold, silver) per scrip. A $100 was due on January 1, 1792. Another $100 was then due on July 1, 1792. A payment of $100 was due on January 1, 1793, and a final payment of $75 was due on July 1, 1793. The total price per share was $400.The scrips were soon the target of intense speculation. They went from $25 to $50 in the first few weeks. The scrips rose from $50 to over $300 each, then the bubble burst and they declined back down to the $120-$130 range. At this point, Verplank optained an obtion from Bernard Hart.On December 9th, 1791 Bernard Hart promised to purchase from Daniel C. Verplank thirty-five Bank of the United States subscriptions at $135 each, if received on December 26th, 1791. If Verplanck obtained his scrips through the initial public offering he stood to gain $110 per scrip by excercising his option. The fact that this document remained among Verplanck's business papers indicates Verplanck did not execrcise the option. The reason is almost certainly due to the fact that Bank of the US scrip prices rose throughout December of 1791. This superb example of a stock transaction between a wealthy New York real estate investor, and one of the signers of the Buttonwood Agreement, will be a prize piece for any advanced collector of early American financial history.

Napoleonic Wars, Irish and British History: Castlereagh, Robert Stewart, Viscount (1769-1822). Second Marquess of Londonderry, Irish-British statesman, played a key role in crushing the Irish Rebellion in 1798, Member of the House of Commons for Down, lobbied and intrigued for the Act of Union with Ireland to be passed, promoted to Secretary of State for War and for the Colonies in 1804, served as William Pitts' political deputy, later served as British Foreign Secretary (1812-1822); Pitt would be the principal British diplomat at the Congress of Vienna. Autograph Manuscript Letter Signed "Castlereagh" as Secretary for War and the Colonies. Two pages, 4to, Downing Street [London] 10th of October 1805. Addressing the Commander-in-Chief [of the King's German Legion, Prince Adolphus, the Duke of Cambridge], Castlereagh communicates King George the Third's "Royal Pleasure that you do issue the necessary orders for the Hanoverian Legion, consisting of the Force in the Margin mentioned, to be marched to the neighbourhood of Dover in order to be embarked for foreign Service. Your Royal Highness will receive His Majesty's Pleasure for appointing a Lieutenant General and a suitable staff for the said Corps. And…have the necessary arrangements made so that the Corps may be provided with Camp Equipage, Ordnance and Ammunition, to enable it to take the Field if necessary upon its' arrival on the Continent…" In the left margin of the first page is a list of the divisions that will make up the legion, totaling 6,080 troops. The Hanoverian Legion - not to be confused with Napoleon's troops of the same name - was the only German force that fought consistently against the French in the Napoleonic Wars. It was formed from officers of the Hanoverian army after the French occupied the principality in 1803, and usually broken up into smaller units that served separately through the final victory at Waterloo. It was disbanded in 1816, with some of its members folding back into the restored Hanoverian army. Separation at left side fold and paper loss in blank top margin of first page repaired with matching paper, otherwise Very Good. Matted with a printed image of Castlereagh and contained under double glass to show both pages in a wooden frame, two brass suspension loops at top.
