The Common Road Steam Conveyance Company. Dated 1840 (in manuscript, but likely to be 1841), a most interesting prospectus for the company, offering 40,000 shares at each with a provisional management committee of Messer's Beningfield, Ekin, Herring, Hullmandel, Parry and Watson. A folded double-sided broadsheet, opened and sandwiched between glass in a double-sided frame, and hand-addressed to Mr D Brown, Oxford Buildings, Cheltenham. Verso is printed a testimonial by Mr J T Beale to Colonel Maceroni's steam-engines and boilers, together with various overviews of 'Steam Locomotion' dating from the 1830s, and with a profile of Col. F. Maceroni and his personal introduction to Mr Gurney, etcetera Historic Note: It seems that Col. F. Maceroni was perhaps one of the most colourful entrepreneurs of self-propelled road locomotion, at a time when steam road transport was road tested by many. He designed a number of steam carriages which he built at his own works in Paddington in the 1830s, but was brought to debt by creditors. He then got involved with steam carriages built by Beale in East Greenwich, which were tested to great aplomb in Kent, but the share floatation failed to fund the £1100 bill for the building of the carriage, which was subsequently seized by bailiffs. The well-detailed image at the top of the handbill is believed to be that of Maceroni's carriage, with a very similar, although not the same image, as illustrated in Dr Dionysius Lardner's 'The Steam Engine Explained' of 1840. H. Rider Haggard : ALS from this writer to the Editor of The Spectator comprised of five double sided pages responding in detail to a review of 'She' that evidently featured in that publication ( possibly that featured in the archived Spectator issue of 15th. There is also a manuscript transcription of Andrew Lang's poem 'She' ( dedicated to H.R.H. ) written on the Half Title page - thus reflecting the association between the two men. No date appears with either manuscript and there is no other indication of the provenance of the volume. Also included in this Lot is a copy of Haggard's King Solomon's Mines, 1887 - fifty-third thousand. PRIESTLEY J. B.: (1894-1984) English Author, Novelist & Playwright. Typed manuscript, signed, with holograph corrections, twelve pages, small 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1973), to the verso of the printed stationery of Brook Hill, Isle of Wight. The pages of partially corrected prose are entitled Visiting New Zealand and bear blue and black ink amendments in Priestley's hand. Priestley's travelogue contains the authors personal experiences and outlook on travelling through the islands of New Zealand and states, in part, 'The sourness of New York, Paris or even London these days is not found down there. As there are so comparatively few of them, people are still a treat in New Zealand. They are not crowding you out and being a damn nuisance. This is the one reason why we went there, paying our first visit' continuing, 'Seeing vast fields where sheep seemed to be grazing in their thousands, I imagined their owner twiddling his thumbs or fishing for trout, secure in his knowledge that all the creatures were growing merinos and crossbreds and lamb chops for him to market. But these farmers are both hard-working and anxious. Indeed, anxiety lurks behind the cheery-hearty New Zealand manner' further continuing, 'Christchurch looks as if it had been lent to New Zealand by the Church of England - at its best. It is leisurely and leafy, almost a garden city, and if I had to remain in New Zealand I would follow my friend Ngaio Marsh's example and live in Christchurch.' Signed by Priestley in bold black fountain pen ink to the conclusion. With very minor age wear. VGNgaio Marsh (1895-1982) New Zealand Author and Theatre Director.

RUSKIN INTEREST. [RUSKIN (J)]. SEVERN, (Joan Ruskin and family). A small group of autograph letters to and from members of the Severn family, various dates, 1832 - c.1904, about 30 letters in total plus a few rather amateurish drawings and watercolours attributed to Cecil Lawson Jr. (son of the artist Cecil Lawson). This group includes a three-page letter (a copy letter?) apparently by John Ruskin, but not in his hand, to his god-daughter Constance [Oldham], Brantwood, Coniston. 28th August 1886, signed G. P. (Godparent) at the end in which he apologises for his behaviour - 'I admit that I must have been inexcusably horrid, even now that I begin to think myself the least bit nice again - and I'm utterly frightened that I should be ever so horrid again. And I'm very penitent and dreadfully puzzled and wondering whether I'm a bit worth all the worry - and the turtle soup - and the peas - and the pretty letters and the no end of sugar almond messages - from my G. D. (god-daughter?) ...'. This letter possibly dates from a time when Ruskin was suffering from a bout of mental instability. Another letter to an unidentified person's mother describes a visit to Brantwood with Constance and a meeting with Ruskin - '...yesterday I had to drive to Brantwood to take back the priceless treasures he had lent us and he made me stay luncheon and sail back afterwards. I was shown at once to a study - placed where I had the best view the lake afforded & then shown treasure after treasure...Then he showed me books - the ms. of Scott's novels....'. Another letter also describes a meeting with Ruskin. Also a testimonial written by Vincent Novello, dated 1832, for the organist Thomas Henry Severn (brother of Henry Severn who was the father of the artist Arthur Severn), and a long 3 page letter also from Novello, dated 1846, to Thomas Severn. Included also are letters by Seffler, T. Cooke, Henry Smart and others to T. H. Severn on musical matters; together with The Ruskin Birthday Book, 1883 first edition, large 8vo, morocco. Included are inscriptions or entries by Joan Ruskin Severn to her cousin Marion Severn - 'with love, & all good wishes...11th March 1901' and 42 manuscript entries, including John Ruskin (signature cut from a crossed cheque and pasted in), Edward Elgar, Arthur Severn, with pen and ink sketch, Joan Ruskin Severn and Mary Severn Perry with small pen and ink sketch of the Pyramids and the Nile. There are also the signatures of a number of musicians with autograph music quotations including Hamilton Harty, Hubert Barth and Roger Quilter.
