Architecture.- Sharpe (Edmund) [Original manuscript] Supplement to "Architectural Parallels" Containing Full-sized Mouldings, containing the full-sized mouldings of the Abbey Churches: Furness, Roche, Byland, Hexham, Jervaulx, Whitby, Fountains, Netley, Rievaulx, Bridlington, Tintern, St. Mary’s, York, Guisborough, Howden, and Selby, manuscript title and contents, comprising 59 manuscript watercolour wash outline drawings, pencil under-drawing and annotations, lacking drawing for plate 20, all but 10 on wove paper, the others on tracing tipped onto wove paper support, each sheet approx. 550 x 425 mm (21 1/2 x 16 3/4 in), handling creases, surface dirt and finger-soiling throughout, some spotting and repaired tears, without covers, presented in modern cloth portfolio, [circa 1848]; together with a disbound copy of Sharpe's 'Architectural Parallels...', folio, 1848; and another unrelated, folio (3)*** The present drawings were first outlined in pencil before an ink line was added to differentiate the edge of each of the mouldings, these were then finished with a coloured wash in order to fill out the image. These drawings where doubtless transferred to the lithograph plates at which stage the lithographs were supplied with letterpress. It is quite possible a number of the pencil drawings were made in situ as Sharpe was adept at using the the Robert Willis’ newly invented Cymagraph. With some practice and dexterity mouldings could for the first time be accurately reproduced, Sharpe had improved the design of the instrument and was clearly the first person to provide accurate drawings of the major ecclesiastical building in a printed work. It was somewhat fortuitous that the instrument was available at the time he was planning his Architectural Parallels.

1869 2c Manuscript surcharge on 1½c on ½a, used with Penang duplex, tiny pinhole at top, pulled perf at left, rounded corner perf at lower right, still a good example of this rare stamp, accompanied by a Philatelic Society London Certificate no. 61, dated August 1894, signed by E.D Bacon, M.P Castle and Edward B. Evans stating "the M.S Surcharge is probably genuine, but that it is quite impossible to guarantee a surcharge of this nature". The earliest Philatelic Society Certificate we have seen (and possibly the earliest surviving certificate?) from the first year of the expert committee, signed by three of the most eminent of all philatelists, nevertheless showing some caution in wording their certificate for what is clearly a genuine example of this rare stamp. Switzerland. 1954 (Mar. 10) Cover franked 2/- from Melbourne to Geneva, a little scorched but without any cachet, enclosed within a white ambulance envelope with printed cachet and manuscript "A". The Swiss Post Office have incorrectly treated the ambulance envelope as unpaid, endorsing it with a "50" charge and applying a 50c grey postage stamp, tied by Geneva datestamp, to collect the fee. HELENA" c.d.s alongside and red "LONDON / PAID" c.d.s (Sep 2), oval framed "PD" and red manuscript "20", backstamped at Loano. Fine and rare to Italy. With Sismondo Certificate (2004). 1875 (Dec 6) Cover to London with 6d dull blue pair each with a fine cork cancel (Proud K22), a St. Helena datestamp unusually with the day altered in manuscript from "4" to "6", red "LONDON / PAID" arrival c.d.s (Jan 1), very fine. Photo on Page 230.

1931 (Jan 8) Stampless cover from London to L. Hollingworth in Zanzibar with "3D / TO PAY / W.C.1" dues applied in error, manuscript "T30", 12c green "cent·s" variety + 1930 6c yellow dues tied by a Zanzibar c.d.s (Jan 27), manuscript "1073" register number. The 12c with small defect at foot, nevertheless the only recorded example of this 12c variety recorded on cover, with just six examples of this variety recorded in total. Item 72 in the Griffith-Jones listing, illustrated on page 329 of the handbook. A unique and important cover. S.G. D7a, 21, £1,740 as stamps. Photo on Page 258

1931 (Mar 10) Cover from Entebbe, Uganda, to H. Alley at The Treasury, Zanzibar, franked 1c, hexagonal framed "T" with manuscript "35ctms", bearing 1c + 20c dues tied by Zanzibar datestamps (Mar. 18). Item 21 in the Griffith-Jones listing, illustrated on page 327 of his handbook. Fine and an unusual combination of dues (instead of a single 21c), the 1c value rare on cover, with just six covers recorded bearing this value. S.G. D1,11, £240 as stamps. Photo on Page 258.

1729 (June 5) Entire letter written and addressed by J. Plumb but signed "Free Tho Brereton" in a differing hand, posted from London to Liverpool, the differing signature noticed by the Inspector of Franks who has crossed the signature out and charged 4d (initialled). Also a c1750 letter to Edinburgh (faults) with "Free Jas. Carnegie" clearly in a differing hand to the address and letter but allowed by the Inspector with manuscript "P". An unusual pair. (2).

c.1853 Stampless covers with double oval "MORMON ISLAND / CALA" handstamps, one to Granville, Ohio with boxed "10" and "FEB 28" within the handstamp, the other to Sehago, Maine with manuscript "April 10th" date and "10" charge, both fine. Also a letter from a Mormon settler, written on a lettersheet previously posted at Salt Lake City. (3). Photo on Page 44.

c.1855 Cover from San Francisco to Jesus Springs, Mormon Island, franked 3c (three margins, corner fault) cancelled in manuscript and with blue circular "PACIFIC EXPRESS Co / JUL / 16 / SAN FRANCISCO", matching oval framed "PAID" at left and oval "PACIFIC EXPRESS Co / JUL, 17 / MORMON ISLAND". Endorsed "This dont belong here" and "try this at Texas Hill", minor soiling at right, scarce. Also 1884 2c stationery envelope with printed Wells Fargo & Co Express frank, from San Francisco, addressed in English and Chinese to "Wing On Wo, Dutch Flat, Cal.", minor staining. (2). Also an 1853 Gold Licence issued at Ballarat to dig for alluvial gold on private land. (10).
