[Beaumont, J.], The Present State of the Universe, 3rd edition, London, 1701, containing "the Ensigns, Colours or Flags of the Ships at Sea: Belonging to the Several Princes and States in the World"antique calf, with decorated boards and ribbed spine with original label, some old damages within the text and preliminary pages but the 70 hand-coloured flags in good condition, with index Although a very small number of flag treatises are recorded from the seventeenth century, almost all are in manuscript form and are predominantly European rather than English; the third edition of The Present State of the Universe is, however, believed to be the first printed work in English which illustrates sea flags [it is presumed that the two earlier editions lacked this section]; copies of this third edition are rare and hand-coloured ones excessively so.

The Krays: The Ron Hart Manuscript and Memoirs, an eighty two page account of Ron`s life with and working for the Kray`s, including insights into the murders of Frank Mitchell, George Cornell and Jack `The Hat` McVitie, with details of Reggies marriage and gang life including "The Rota for Violence", each page is signed. With a secondary manuscript beginning "Those were the Krays my friend and I thought theyd never end". Accompanying this is a letter from Ron Kray referring to Hart as "one of the worst Judas their ever was, he has turned out the most detestable person" and the authors transcript interview. After the Twins themselves, the Ron Hart material, contains probably the most detailed and important unused first-hand information on Kray Twins in the entire archive. A former merchant seaman, pimp and small-time criminal, Hart was a first cousin of the Twins on his mother`s side, and as such enjoyed a particularly trusted position when he joined `the Firm` in 1963. He was at the centre of the whole Twins` operation, including the murder of Cornell, and in 1967 he became a self-confessed accessory to their murder of Jack `the Hat` McVitie. As such, having turned `Queen`s evidence`, he became the key witness against the Twins in their Old Bailey Trial in 1969 when they received 30 year sentences apiece for the Cornell-McVitie murders. The manuscript includes a blood-curdling first-hand account of the frenzied murder of McVitie, precise information on the Kray`s widespread protection rackets throughout London and an unpublished description of the obscene behaviour of Lord Boothby at one of Ron`s sado-masochistic sex-shows. Ron subsequently disappeared, and despite assistance from Scotland Yard`s missing person`s bureau, JP has been unable to discover any information of his whereabouts. At the time there were rumours from the underworld, that the Twins had had their cousin dealt with from inside prison. Ron Hart`s memoirs are unrivalled. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only copy in existence.

She reports on seeing the German Emperor (Wilhelm II) visiting the King in Venice: ‘...I saw the yacht sail in and all the gaily decorated Gondolas out to meet him. They looked as picturesque in their various coloured boats & the men dressed to correspond. In the evening I went out with a lady & gentleman to see the illuminations near the Palace the King & Queen & Emperor and Empress appeared on the balcony for a few minutes...’ In Florence she remarks on Catholic service : ‘...their worship is a mystery to me no reverence in the Church people going in & out all the time & talking to their friends...’

A fascinating collection of maps and drawings by Rev. James Mickleburgh. Mickleburgh was a rural pastor who was also an editor of the Society for the Diffusion of Usful Knowledge (S.D.U.K.). His druaghtmanship is not in question, and it is presumed that with his connection to the S.D.U.K. he was also the cartographer of the map, as Speake was one of his parishioners. There are examples of Speake’s maps in the Royal Geographical Society and they lack the obvious professional style and appearance of this example. In fact they are somewhat amateurish. We pressume that Mickleburgh drew this map for Speake. The album contains several drawings of Dartmouth and the surrounding towns and villages of Devon. James Mickleburgh was a contributor to the drawings in the two volumes of Anastatic drawings. The provenence of this collection is by descent to the present owner from James Mickleburgh’s housekeeper, Phoebe Newbery. A family tree and census entries are included in the lot. (4)
