The later comments on the manuscript may well be his. Thomas Staines (1776-1830) was not the first to discover the mutineers, that credit went to Captain Mayhew Folger of Nantucket on the Boston sealer Topaz who had landed in Pitcairn in October 1808, eighteen years after the mutiny. A Narrative of the Briton's Voyage to Pitcairn Island by its first Lieutenant, John Shillibeer, was published in 1817.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
TIGHE (MARY)Psyche, or The Legend of Love, FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY TO THE PAINTER JAMES BARRY, inscribed on title-page 'To James Barry Esq., from M Tighe 1805', wide margins, title slightly stained at foot, contemporary green straight-grained morocco, sides gilt ruled and panelled, with floral corner-pieces and outer border, agate on-lays to each cover, spine in five separate compartments with raised bands, tooled and lettered in gilt and blind, gilt clasp set with gems, very light rubbing to foot of spine, gilt turn-ins, yellow watered silk endpapers, g.e., housed in a contemporary velvet-lined, gilt-tooled diced russia box, with gilt lettering on spine, rubbed, to joints split [P.R. Feldman and B.C. Cooney, Collected Poetry of Mary Tighe, p. 590, citing this copy], 16mo (250 x 94mm.), [C. Whittingham for James Carpenter], 1805Footnotes:A SEMINAL WORK OF IRISH ROMANTICISM INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN AN EXQUISITE OPULENT CONTEMPORARY BINDING. According to Paula Feldman, joint editor of The Collected Poetry of Mary Tighe, the binding is far more ornate than any of the other copies she has examined, and is especially unusual for the addition of the Wedgwood style cameo, ornate metal lock, semi-precious stones, and agate onset, which she believes may have been added by a subsequent owner to the original binding and endpapers especially commissioned by the author.Irish poet Mary Tighe (1772-1810) '...was a crucial force in shaping British Romanticism. With remarkable vitality and virtuosity, her poetry engaged the central issues of the period, often in advance of writers now considered canonical, and commanded the attention and respect of her contemporaries.... These poems demonstrate the technical virtuosity with which Tighe movingly wrote about the tensions between love and loss, duty and desire, the spiritual and the sensuous, loyalty and betrayal, nation and family, the Irish and the British, and much more, while struggling with debilitating illness...' (Paula R. Feldman & Brian C. Cooney, The Collected Poetry of Mary Tighe, 2016, p.1).Tighe published only one work in her lifetime, Psyche; or, the Legend of Love, which was put out in a private edition of fifty copies for the benefit of family and friends in 1805. However, whilst having many admirers amongst her literary circle (including Thomas Moore, Joseph Cooper Walker and the Ladies of Llangollen) it was the posthumous publication of Psyche, with Other Poems, in 1811 and in several later editions, that made her name widely known and established her literary reputation. The decorative on-lay on the upper cover is a copy of a Wedgwood design by John Flaxman of 1776 depicting a procession of putti guiding the bound and draped Cupid and Psyche to their wedding. Here, however, one figure on the far right hand-side has been omitted. The decorative on-lay on the lower board is a cameo of a female figure in profile, possibly the author herself. Although the binding is unsigned, according to Philippa Marks of the British Library, it can be attributed to the workshop of Rodwell, Golden Square, London. In fact, the British Library holds a copy of a work by Juan de Flores (G102030) with a binding signed by Rodwell which is characterised by identical floral corner pieces to those on this book (Law, E., 'Psyche: or the Legend of Love, 1805', Old Kilkenny Review, 65 (2013), p.45).For a manuscript notebook of her poems, see our Women Through History sale on 23rd March 2022, lot 153.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

INDIA – EAST INDIA COMPANY & THE FIRST ANGLO-MARATHA WARManuscript journal, purportedly that of The Rev. Mr Arnold Burrowes (1749-1819), Senior Military Chaplain, Honourable East India Company Service, Bombay, written initially at Bombay and thence whilst accompanying Colonel Keating on campaigns during the first Anglo-Maratha War, with detailed journal entries, noting the arrival and departure of ships and passengers, pastimes, news on Company skirmishes with Portuguese troops ('...between two and three hundred fighting men... marched from Mahim... to attack the Fort of Versava on the sea coast...'), a description of the death of Commodore John Watson at Fort Thanna, a precis of Indian Affairs in 1774 ('...a grand Epocha in the history of the English transactions in the East Indies...'), many pages on history and religion ('...Brahmins... never taste anything that either has or could enjoy life...') and the advent of the first Maratha War ('...this revolution, so fatal and unexpected...'), much on his appointment as chaplain to Colonel Keating and his subsequent travels, to Surat for the signing of the treaty between Raghoba and the British ('...They proceeded in the greatest state... a large handsome building in the Mogul taste, just finished; adorned with chandeliers and carpets... The Nabob and all his attendants out of compliment to the English were seated in chairs...'), describing in detail their various camps, with descriptions of skirmishes ('...The enemy... in the greatest confusion... fled with the utmost precipitation, leaving their tents, grain and baggage on the ground...') and a vivid account of the success of the British forces at the Battle of Arras 18 May 1775 ('...For the enemy now observing this surprizing change in their favor, instantly faced about with renewed courage... and hacked our flying troops in the most shocking manner...'), with descriptions of life in camp ('...the water was soon rendered so thick and muddy by the thousands of men, horses, camels and elephants...'), on the morale of Ragobah's army ('...dispirited, fearful and timid to the last degree...'), changing allegiances ('...The Nabob Hyder Ally has declared himself in Ragobah's favor...'), interspersed throughout with descriptions of the landscapes, wildlife and weather, trade and the pastimes of the Nabobs ('...hawking and hunting... the flying of paper kites was formerly a fashionable amusement...'), his final task for Colonel Keating to take dispatches to Bombay on his behalf ('...I set out early this morning on an elephant...'), arriving at Bombay to find to his dismay that an immediate cessation of arms was ordered ('...This conduct... being fraught with the worst of consequences to the Companys interest on this side of India, where they would have obtained very valuable acquisitions in territorial revenues, as well as many other solid advantages upon Ragobahs establishment in the government of Poonah...'), 132 leaves, pages numbered 245 to 487, margins ruled in red, watermark, original blindstamped calf, worn with losses to back board and spine, folio (305 x 188mm.), 1 January 1774 to 9 September 1775Footnotes:'I SET OUT EARLY THIS MORNING ON AN ELEPHANT': The Honourable East India Company's chaplain describes the first skirmishes of the Anglo-Maratha War.Whilst there is no signature or ownership inscription in this journal, the entry for 16 February 1775 identifies the author as '...Chaplain to the troops now ordered from Bombay, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Keating, to assist Ragonath Row, sovereign of the Maharattas in the war he is carrying on against his rebellious ministers...'. The Rev. Mr Arnold Burrowes (1749-1819) can reasonably be assumed, therefore, to be the author of our journal. The numbering of the pages would suggest that this is one of several volumes, with our volume taking in the period of eighteen months from 1774 to 1775 during which time the East India Company embarked on the so-called First Anglo-Maratha War (1775-1782). The war arose from a dispute between two candidates for the vacant position of Peshwa. One claimant, Raghunath Rao, received help from the British in Bombay in return for the promise of territories and trade should he be successful, a promise sealed at the Treaty of Surat, at which our author was present. The turning point was the Battle of Arras on 18 May 1775, described in detail here, resulting in heavy losses for the Mahratta chieftains under Hari Pant Phunhay and a British victory, despite Rao's troops fleeing in confusion. In consequence, the East India Company at Calcutta under Warren Hastings opposed any further interference and ordered the annulment of the Treaty of Surat, much to our author's disappointment, which is where our journal ends. Hostilities were resumed, however, and were to continue for a further seven years until a British victory sealed twenty years of peace. The journal is sold with a nineteenth century commonplace book, letters and family papers pertaining to the Wilson family, a descendant of whom was James Wilson (1805-1860), the founder of The Economist weekly and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, who also held the post of Secretary of the Board of Control which supervised the East India Company's control of British India. Provenance: Basil F.A. Wilson, Edinburgh (ownership inscription dating from the 1930's in pencil on first leaf); thence by descent to the present owner. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
[JOURDAIN (ELEANOR FRANCES) AND CHARLOTTE ANNE ELIZABETH MOBERLEY]An Adventure, second edition 'with appendix and maps', 5 maps (3 folding), a newspaper cutting from 'The Times' pasted onto blank verso of contents page, publisher's blue cloth, soiled, spine ends rubbed, 8vo, Macmillan, 1913Footnotes:'ONE OF THE BEST-KNOWN OF ALL GHOST STORIES' (ODNB), written by two 'psychic' female authors, with manuscript correspondence by early readers as to the authenticity of the stories. An Adventure recounts the mysterious incident in which the two female authors came 'upon figures in eighteenth-century dress near the Petit Trianon... [whom they believed] were ghosts of Marie Antoinette and members of her court and that the landscape and buildings they had seen were just as they had been in 1789... Later critics have speculated that behind their collaboration lay a repressed lesbian relationship' (ODNB). Provenance: Rashleigh Holt-White, ownership inscription, and correspondence. In his letter to Bertha Prentiss (21 May 1927), Holt-White writes that the 'book absolutely puzzles me... [and] that, if he ladies are truthful, and I find it almost impossible to believe that such ladies invented or even embellished their story, they have seen, & even conversed with supernatural beings!...'. In her reply (21 July 1927) Bertha states that she thinks 'these ladies had second sight', and encloses a 2-page manuscript account by a 'Mrs Green' relating to her meeting Mrs. Jourdain in Paris in 1900/01, recalling that she had the 'extraordinary power of gaining an ascendency over those with whom she came in contact if she wished to do so - I fancy she was, what is now called 'Psychic''.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
NAPOLEON BONAPARTEDocument signed ('Bonaparte') as Générale en Chef d'Armée, enclosing three copies of orders [not present] for the setting up of boards of trade similar to the 'tribunaux' in Alexandria, Rosette and elsewhere, with subscription in another hand dated the following day passing on the order; engraved heading 'Armée Liberté Egalité' with manuscript insertions, docketed 'Commerce' top left, one page, light dust-staining and marks, edges frayed, folio (340 x 230mm.), mounted and framed, overall 440 x 320mm., unexamined out of frame, Cairo, 'le 26 fructidor an 6' [12 September 1798]Footnotes:The purpose of Napoleon's campaign in Egypt from 1798-1801 was primarily to block Britain's trade route to India and re-establish French commerce with the Levant whilst, at the same time, establishing scientific enterprise in the region and join with the Indian ruler Tipu Sultan against the British in India. Whilst Napoleon was defeated by Nelson at sea at Aboukir in August 1798, the Battle of the Pyramids in July had been a resounding victory for the French and consolidated their position on land, thus allowing Napoleon to establish his own colonial administration in the country. As part of his campaign, he brought with him a group of scientists, mathematicians, naturalists and artists – the Commission des Sciences et des Arts d'Egypte – to provide comprehensive information on the country they had conquered, culminating in his monumental encyclopaedia Description de l'Egypte and creating a renewed interest in ancient Egyptian culture. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

After defeating the Austrian army at the battle of Malborghetto on 23 March 1797, Napoleon followed the retreating Austrians army to Klagenfurt, from whence he hoped to easily march on Vienna. From there he wrote to the Archduke on 31 March with overtures for peace, not wishing to prolong the campaign any further. On 1 April, the date of our order, the French pushed back the Austrians culminating in the victory at Unzmarkt on the 3rd. Klagenfurt was captured in late 1797, forcing the Holy Roman Emperor to come to terms with the Treaty of Campo Formio in October, which effectively left Great Britain to fight the French alone. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The family rose in importance and office, providing several mayors of Dover and Lieutenants of Dover Castle as well as three MP's. The Reverend Richard Monins Easton was rector of Ringwould and Charlton in Kent, the son of Richard Monins, headmaster of King's School, Canterbury, from whom he inherited the living. He had died unmarried at the age of 36 in 1770 so our map would appear to have been commissioned at the bequest of his brother and heir, John Monins (b.1741), whose name also appears. A veteran of the American wars he retired from the army at the death of his brother and took up residence at Woodford in Essex where he had inherited property as well as the advowson of Ringwould. In 1777 he bought a property in Canterbury called the Archbishop's Palace on which he built a mansion called 'The Palace' (www.eastkenthistory.org.uk). The subject of our second map, Dunspring Farm was one of several farms comprising the manor of Clayhall in Essex which had passed into the Monins family through a distant relative, Miss Marland. The volume bears the ownership inscription of James Barker of Coverack (1747-1840) who is listed as a licenced pilot in the Compulsory Pilotage Notice for 1809 (the year licensing of pilots was first introduced). The Barker family of Coverack plied their trade as pilots for several generations, using their skilled knowledge of the coastline to help guide ships safely round the treacherous Cornish coast, boarding ships and providing information to the ships' masters on unfamiliar tides, currents and underwater hazards (Knight, T., 'Falmouth Pilots of the late Nineteenth Century', Troze: The Online Journal of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, December 2019, Vol. 8, No. 1). Judging from the entries in the present volume, the Barkers were involved in several operations, not only piloting and landing of goods but rescue and lucrative salvage operations as well as trading in fish, rum and gin. The account of the Bodmin Sessions for 4 October 1808 also identifies James Barker as a fish curer: '...shipped at Liverpool 2,800 bushels of British fishery salt to carry it to Coverack, in parish of Gweek, on account of James Barker, fish curer. During a storm on the voyage they lost 65 bushels 22 lbs. of salt...' (Archives and Cornish Studies Centre, ref. QS/1/7/555). One particularly poignant entry in our volume amongst the columns of pounds, shillings and pence serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by those who made their living on the seas: '...November 5 1788 the Maccrony saild for Guernsey with Anthony Barker, Nicholas Hoskin, Philip Hicks & Francis Lowry on Bord and have not been heard of Since...'.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
