13th century AD. A bronze heater-shaped pendant with pierced lug suspension; enamelled face with three reserved flowers blazoned 'azure three cinquefoils or'. 13 grams, 45mm (1 3/4"). Found Suffolk, UK. Property of a Warwickshire gentleman; formerly in the private collection of the famous actor Leslie Phillips; acquired 1950-1960. Cf. similar pendants in Ashley, S. Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture in Norfolk, East Anglian Archaeology 101, Dereham, 2002, fig.12. The arms 'azure three cinquefoils or' are attributed to Stefne de Cosintone (Stephen of Cossington) in the Dering Roll of circa 1275 relating mainly to armorial families in Kent and Sussex. The same arms are recorded for Sir Thomas Bardolf in Nicolas's edition of A Roll of Arms of the Reign of Edward the Second, (London, 1829) i.e. the period 1308-1314. William Bardolf was the fourth Baron Bardolf and third Baron Damory of Wormegay, and held large areas of land in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Suffolk and Surrey. Born in 1924 in London, Leslie Phillips attended the Italia Conti Academy where he developed the slightly affected accent which became his trademark. He usually played a roguish, suave charmer, and also enjoyed successful comic roles in the early Carry On films and on radio’s The Navy Lark. He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours.
