Gilding rubbed on high spots, very fine, scarce. A satirical medal on the banking methods of John Law and satirising the Mississippi System he promoted with other money-making ventures (B. Betts, Descriptive List of Medals Relating to John Law and the Mississippi System, Boston 1907).

Good very fine, scarce. “Silver” and “Gold” Medals struck in Bronze are known from this event. The 1904 Olympic Games ran alongside the Exposition.
WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, United States of America and the Americas, USA, Naval Interest, The Great White Fleet, Circumnavigation of the World in 1907, Bronze Plaque, by William Barber, bust of Theodore Roosevelt left, rev a classical figure bids farewell to the fleet, 80mm x 60mm maximum. Extremely fine. In 1907 a US Navy Fleet embarked on a circumnavigation of the globe which was completed in 1909. The fleet comprised 16 battle ships, along with escorts, all of which had their hulls painted white, the US Navy’s peacetime colour. It was a display of goodwill which also served to prove the seaworthiness of the navy, enforce treaties and protect overseas holdings.
WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Art Medals, United States of America and the Americas, USA, The United States Antarctic Expedition, 1939-1941, Service Medal, an unnamed bronze specimen, the globe as seen from Antarctica, rev legend, 34mm, suspension ring and ribbon. Extremely fine, rare. This medal was awarded by Congress to those who participated in the third expedition led by Admiral Richard E Byrd (1888-1957). It was the first one on which he had the official backing of the US Government. The project included extensive studies of geology, biology, meteorology and exploration. However, in March 1940 Byrd was recalled to active duty in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. The expedition continued in Antarctica without him. 60 medals were awarded in gold, including one to Admiral Byrd, 50 in both silver and bronze, the bronze being for those who only made one summer trip. The medal was designed by John R Sinnock, Chief Engraver of the Philadelphia Mint.

Very fine.
WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Medals by Subject, Art, France, Télégraphie sans Fil (telegraph without a wire), Wireless or Radio, Large Bronze Medal, 1927, by Paul Marcel Dammann (1885-1939), standing figure of Iris with winged ankles, partial Zodiac behind, rev globe encircled by an antenna emitting radio waves, TSF below, 100mm (CGMP p.116; Jones, Art of the Medal, 423). One of the classic Art Deco medallic images, nearly extremely fine with dark patination, scarce.
WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Medals by Subject, Exploration, United Kingdom, Royal Geographical Society, Gilt-bronze Medal, for the East Africa Expedition, 1878-1880, Minerva stands by globe and sextant, rev legends and wreath, 39mm. Pierced, scuffed and bruised, fine and very rare. The medal was struck for presentation to the members of the expedition led by Alexander Keith Johnston (1844-1879), to Lakes Nyasa and Tanganyika. Johnston died from malaria and dysentry in Beho Beho, some 120 miles from Dar es Salaam. The expedition was completed under the leadership of Joseph Thompson (1858-1904), who was to receive the Society’s gold Founder’s Medal in 1885.
WORLD COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Medals by Subject, Exploration, France, Silvered-bronze Award Medal of the Aero Club de France, 1931, to Joanny Burtin (1893-1977), by S Grun, an eagle soars, plane in segment above, front-end on, rev legend and naming, 49.5mm, in case of issue. Matt surface, extremely fine. Burtin first learn to to fly in 1912, becoming a military pilot in 1916. Twice shot down and seriously wounded, he was awarded the Military Medal and the Croix de Guerre. At the time of this award he was working on developing a system of instrument flying – flying blind. He was also breaking altitude records and in 1930 he participated in the Paris-Tokyo-Paris race.

A superb set and the finest we have ever catalogued, the Five Pounds with a few tone spots on reverse design and just the merest hint of light marks in the fields, surprisingly problem free as are all the other coins in this set, the Sovereign with tone spot on cheek and a pleasing red hue otherwise as struck, the Half-Sovereign with tiny tone spot on truncation otherwise with a matching red hue to the Sovereign; Silver coins faultless and with multi-colour rainbow like toning, the Halfcrown with small tone spot in obverse field, the Shilling with small spot on bust and in obverse field, the Maundy Groat with tone blemish in field behind head; Copper all attractively toned, the Farthing darker, the Halfpenny with streak of tone near truncation and spot on neck.
