AN IMPOSING PAIR OF FRENCH GILT-BRONZE CHENETS OR FIRE DOGS, BARBEDIENNE FOUNDRY, c. 1870, each with scroll-cast loop finial above a mask of a Greek philosopher, the downscroll and upright enclosing pierced shell and scrollwork, on a rectangular plinth with incised swags and signed F. Barbedienne. Height 59cm, depth 39.5cm
AFTER VINCENZO GEMITO (ITALIAN, 1852-1929), THE WATER VENDOR, A PATINATED BRONZE, after the fountain created by Gemito in Naples, cast to the reverse with a plaque inscribed "Dall Originale Propta Del Re Napoli SM Francesco II Napoli Gemito" (after the original for Francis II, King of Naples). 56cmNote: The original of this version of the fountain was designed in 1881. This cast probably dates from the end of the 19th century. Another example of this cast is in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay.
