Northern Wei Dynasty, 386-534 AD. A rectangular terracotta brick with recess to the upper face enclosing a robed Buddha figure with right hand raised; coral-pink pigment to the figure and surround. 2.6 kg, 31.5cm (12 1/2"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 2000. The Northern Wei dynasty were great patrons of Buddhism and were responsible for the construction of a multitude of grand monuments that were built throughout North and Central China. The dynasty established a number of cave monasteries, the most famous of which are the Longmen and the Dunhuang Caves, amongst many others, which flourished under later dynastic patronage and became important centres of Buddhist pilgrimage and art. Fine condition.

A flat-section gold hoop with rococo scrolls to the shoulders, three rectangular panels to the bezel with beaded wire borders; each panel with a quatrefoil of cells set with pearls, with niello surround. 3.77 grams, 20mm overall, 18mm internal diameter (approximate size British P 1/2, USA 7 3/4, Europe 17 3/4, Japan 15) (3/4"). From an old Hampshire collection. Fine condition; one pearl absent, niello chipped.
