Europe, probably France or the Low Countries, ca. 1400 to 1500 CE. A collection of three printed illuminated pages from two different but likely contemporary Books of Hours. Two of the pages are still bound together. On those two pages, the Latin text is embellished with headings and paragraph marks printed in rich, colorful red and blue. The other page features a large printed uncial in the center of the page with an initial bordering that column of text. Size of largest page: 4" W x 5.75" H (10.2 cm x 14.6 cm)On the single page, colorful, gilded designs of vines bearing strawberries (vines often signify a French maker) surround the column. Both pages are printed in a formal display script known as Textura semi-quadrata (also Textualis); this was used for later medieval works. Like many illuminated books, the pages here are works of art with their interesting use of layout, color, decoration, and script. Books like these would have been made by an urban bookseller, called a libraire; in this time period it could have come from Paris, Bruges, Ghent, or Valenciennes. They were prized objects, often given as gifts at important occasions. The Book of Hours was a prayerbook used by (mostly wealthy) laypeople; like its counterpart for the clergy, the Divine Office, it was divided into times of day and included the Psalms, hymns, and various prayers. These books often belonged to upper class and emerging middle class women, who would have treasured them both as devotional objects and as status symbols. Provenance: Ex-private East Coast USA collection Condition: These three pages were cut from two different Books of Hours. Two small stain areas on one page, although neither prevents it from being read; edges have slight wear/damage both along cut line (from binding) and along outside edge (from touch). All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An 18 karat gold ring with a deep blue glass intaglio set in an oval bezel. The gold setting is finely worked; note the wavy surround 'framing' the intaglio and the fine, stylized geometric engraving adorning the shank. While possible to see glimpses of the schematized imagery on the intaglio, it is difficult to decipher due to surface wear and encrustations. Total weight: 8.6 grams; Size: intaglio measures .5" L x .375" W (1.3 cm x 1 cm); opening measures .625" L x .5" W (1.6 cm x 1.3 cm) Provenance: Ex-New Hampshire collection, most acquired prior to 1985 Condition: Surface wear and encrustations to intaglio. Shank with surface wear and some bending as shown. Ring is somewhat misshapen, making ring size difficult to discern, closest to size 1. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #119484
Pakistan, Swat Valley, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive silver and lapis lazuli choker style torque necklace, the u-shaped neckpiece comprised of twisted silver rope-pattern and smooth wires, flanked by a pair of flower-shaped appliques that are bezel set with large, round cabochon, lapis lazuli stones of breathtaking blue hues with lovely light and dark grey inclusions, the silver petals surrounding each stone finely detailed with incised linear motifs, the inner ring-like surround with granulation that is mirrored on the triangular attachments at either end of the 'flowers'. Finally, the termini assume a quasi-serpentine form with incised linear (perhaps abstract snake skin) patterns at the bases and a pointed stylized 'head' at the end of the hook-shaped termini. A mesmerizing example set in a glass-fronted, blue velvet lined, wooden shadow box frame to be appreciated as a work of art. It could, however, be removed from the frame and taken to a jeweler to be fitted with a suspension chain for wearing. Size: 5.5" L x 6.75" W (14 cm x 17.1 cm); opening between termini measures 2.375" W (6 cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Boulder, CO collection acquired at Indochine Gallery Condition: Expected minor tarnish and surface wear commensurate with age. Slight bending to bezels but stones appear to be secure. The necklace has been mounted in the shadow box; however, it could be removed from the frame and taken to a jeweler to be fitted with a suspension chain for wearing. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Ancient Greek, Cyprus, Cypro-Archaic Period, ca. 750 to 500 BCE. A round, shallow terracotta plate with twin loop handles projecting from its sides and black-on-white painted motifs on the interior and exterior. The interior has a tight spiral design in tondo at its center, with a wider black border. Another black ring denotes the border between the base and walls of the vessel, and a third follows the rim and the top of the handles. Size: 11.7" L x 8.9" W x 1.2" H (29.7 cm x 22.6 cm x 3 cm)The exterior presents more complex motifs: tight black rings are on the lower body of the vessel (and flow into wider lines outlining the underside of each handle); the slightly pronounced foot ring has a wide, striped pattern. Inside of that is another black border, and then a design divided into four quadrants, each marked by a swastika (gammadion) and divided by cross-hatched triangles. These surround a design of further tight, concentric rings around a circle divided into eight triangular sections of alternating white and black.Ancient Cyprus was positioned perfectly between the Near East and the Mediterranean world, and its kings grew rich from lucrative trade between those places. For example, the royal tombs at Salamis, which were built during this time period, contain a wealth of grave goods from both east and west. Pottery vessels like this one, with the swastika as a good luck symbol, demonstrate the vibrant artistic skill that this wealth supported. Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005 Condition: Two small chips on interior, with expected wear and pigment loss, especially on the rim. Painted motifs are vivid on both interior and exterior. #120336
