A similar chair can be seen in Tom Hanley's photographs of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in their Tittenhurst house. Two copies of these photographs were sent to Hilary Gerrard by Apple Records and accompany this Lot. It is unknown if this was one of the band member's chairs.This example is extremely similar to those chairs designed and made by Lee West of California. ‘The Richardson House’ a large and impressive painted wooden dolls house and contents, English mid 18th century, previously on display in the Vivien Greene Dolls House museum, the sand stone brick effect façade with two steps leading to painted green panelled front door with glazed fanlight, eight recently glazed windows and quoining to each side, with later painted black pitch roof with two chimneys, opening in two wings to six rooms on three levels, hallway and landing with staircase and annex to rear of ground floor landing, all rooms with interior doors and moulded wood surrounds, painted marble effect built-in wooden fireplaces. Hallway and landing with rare original painted wood effect walls, kitchen with painted blue walls, built in plate rake, shelf, cupboard and good Evans and Cartwright tinplate stove with painted marble effect surround, first floor drawing room with fine mid 18th century wall papers with large leaf and rose pattern and rare panel of exotic birds eating fruit. With a good selection of contents including Waltershausen settee with scroll shaped ends, four chairs and a carver all with mauve silk upholstery and three further smaller chairs, sewing table with lyre shaped supports and hinged top (loose), marble top writing desk with pigeon holes, side board with mirror back and painted pillar supports, bureau with two drawers and fold down front, display cabinet with blue lining and two drawers (lacks glass to front) and a chest of drawers all with gold transfer decoration, pair of pink silk upholstered chairs with tassels, painted tinplate mirror on stand with shaped and moulded legs and twisted supports, family of five painted wooden dolls and two with moulded hair styles (both lack lower legs and one lacks arms) and a bisque shoulder head maid together with a good selection of wooden furniture, ornaments, kitchenalia and more, 42 ½” (108cm) tall, 36” (92cm) wide, 15” (38cm) deep , (condition: since this house was sold in the Vivien Greene sale part I in December 1998 the present owner has carefully removed the later red paint to the façade to reveal wonderful original sand stone brick detail, added repainted window brick pediments, replaced sills and repainted front door and steps). Provenance: Prior to being on display at Vivien Greene’s museum the house was the property of the late Sir Albert Richardson, past president of The Royal Academy and pre-eminent authority on 18th century architecture, the drawing room wall paper is of particular interest and has been identified and dated to 1777. ‘Stack House’ a good and important early English painted wooden dolls house and contents, circa 1820, previously on display at the Vivien Greene Dolls House museum, the façade and sides with painted trompe l’oeil, creating a convincing red brick Regency house with stone string course, panelled front door with fanlight, Doric columns to portico and nine sash windows with painted blinds, the kitchen window is particularly interesting and shows a wire blind to keep out flies and a maidservant peering over, awaiting visitors perhaps, the black pitch roof has two chimneys, the front opens in two wings to four rooms, hallway and landing, mounted on a wooden stand. Hallway: this is entered by a painted wooden archway with painted marbled columns, leading to staircase with red silk carpet and ochre painted walls. Kitchen: with plain wood walls and floor, Evans and Cartwright tinplate cooking range with wooden fire surround and brass hand wound mechanical spit Jack, fixed hanging wooden shelves and a selection of kitchen furniture including wooden table, chairs, tinplate Evans & Cartwright chair, food, pots, pans, plates, serving dishes, kettle, utensils and more. Ground floor dining room: with cream floral wallpapers, Evans and Cartwright tinplate fireplace and painted wooden ‘marbled’ surround, good amount of furniture to include wooden tables, pink upholstered chairs with settee, bureau, bird in cage, chessboard (incomplete), and various ornaments, together with two bisque shoulder head seated gentlemen. First floor landing: with blue floral wallpapers, chest of drawers, pram and painted wooden Grodnertal doll in original clothes. House (without stand) 36” (91cm) tall, with stand 59 ¾” (151.5cm), 40” (112cm) wide, 15 ½” (39cm) deep. Stand 24” (61cm) tall, (condition: some repaired cracks to façade, marble effect fireplace surrounds and kitchen surround and Jack not original, stand 19th century but probably not original to house). Provenance: The house originates from Settle in Yorkshire, where it is believed to have remained in Stack House with one family for more than one hundred years, it was subsequently sold to, an antique dealer in Sussex who sold it to Miss Mary Titcomb a friend of Vivien Greene’s, the House features in ‘English Dolls’ Houses of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century’ Vivien Greene’s first book on Dolls Houses and the house was later exhibited in her famous Rotunda Museum, Oxford. The house was sold in 1998 by Bonhams Auctioneers, London as part of the Vivien Greene museum collection. Jennifer Le Masurier later acquired the house and has since done further extensive research into the history and family which will all be offered with the house. CONDITION REPORT: This appears to be in very good condition. There are some losses of veneer to the top left-hand corner and the top right-hand corner. We have a pendulum and keys and it has been ticking away on the wall.
